Petroglyph developing MMO

Studio behind Star Wars: Empire at War and Universe at War: Earth Assault now hiring massively multiplayer online designers for upcoming project.

Las Vegas-based developer Petroglyph is known for its work on real-time strategy games, having created Star Wars: Empire at War and its expansion for LucasArts, and the upcoming Universe at War: Earth Assault for Sega. The studio even boasts a development team rich in experience with the genre, with credits on RTS games from the Command & Conquer series to Civilization III and Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty.

However, it appears as if Petroglyph is looking for a change of pace, as Firing Squad today spotted a job posting by the studio looking for a proven designer of massively multiplayer online games.

According to the job listing, "The MMO Game Designer is responsible for understanding, refining, maintaining, and disseminating the game design vision, game design, mission building, gameplay balancing, and game proposal development of a massive multiplayer online game."

Petroglyph is looking for applicants with three years of experience in the field and at least one completed and shipped MMO game to their credit. The ideal candidate must also be "an avid gamer with strong interest in pushing the industry forward creatively."

I totally thought this was going to be a story about a social MMO where you paint and trade pottery.

If they do make an MMO, they're gonna have to bring something different out. Something very different. But luckily thats the way MMO's are going at the minute, especially with the advent of Tabula Rasa.

I liked neither of their games but I did like the scale of which they put them on. Hopefully the next game will be to my liking...even if it is an MMO.

Well I am hopeful that Petroglyph will try to make an MMO that has something that will appeal to its fan base of great bloodthirsty warmongers (my self included). I personally would like to see more focus on being evil in an MMO like we see in their strategy games, something more than just killing other players. I loved being the Soviets because I could burn down civilian towns in the hope of finding a bonus crate, I enjoyed the suicidal tie maulers and the usage of overwhelming numbers of the Empire, and I plan on blowing up alot of humanities remaining structure and the few remaining people in Universe At War. Hopefully this atleast keeps some of the opressive leader feel I love.

New mmo's arent that bad! LOL! As long as its inovative and Fun. I cant for War and news of a white wolf mmo based off vampire, mage, and werewolf pen and paper games :-)

Nerkcon: just face it, mmo's are the future, partly due to piracy.

*Sigh* Because we don't have enough already! But if they add some RTS twist like you control an army or and empire kind of thing instead of single avatar that would be kinda cool.

Not really sure why they want a MMOG veteran for this. Wouldn't it be better to take in someone fresh who's worked with other genres? I doubt any new levelgrind can compete with WoW, Conan, Warhammer, Tabula Rasa, Aion, etc.

An MMO destroying their fanbase, I don't believe in that honestly. I'm a fan of Petro because I was a fan of Westwood. I'm sure there are plenty of others like me, and a change of genre for a game is not going to shake the foundations of trust that has been earned by good products over the years. Yes, they are going out of their field a bit, and no I'm not going to expect this to be the ultimate MMO. They are good at making games, period. I'll check it out, I'll expect a quality game, but I won't expect something that sells well or gets great reviews based on the appeal to those enthralled with the genre. What to expect? Something like Earth and Beyond? I haven't the slightest, but even an upsetting game will only reduce me to my base claim that Petro is simply out of their genre.

Don't know how it's going to turn out, but at least they're looking for the right people.

I hope they make what Star Wars Galaxies was going to be before Sony got their mitts on it.

... Great. Another MMO. Just what gamers want; to spend more money per month on a glitchy watered-down game that requires no skill to play.

Meh. The only MMO I would actually play is WAR or the as of yet unnamed 40K MMO. (For obvoius reasons)

If Petroglyph was to actually start attempting an MMO, my biggest question would be if there's going to be any RTS-like features.

"MMOGs are stale for now unless they offer housing, good physics, believable interactive environments that change with time and fun combat. So far, all the combat I see is based on lame old staples of RPGs because the hardware could not handle it. I'd like to see MMOGs that play more realistic with believable collision detection rather combat that is dependant on the queing of animations. WOW is outdated but still beautiful because of its stunning art direction." GIF, I'll agree with you on everything except for the WoW comment on the end. I played WoW from week 1 up until about a week ago.... I am so glad to see it go. Tabula Rasa is DEF diff (I am in the beta right now) and IF they can clean up all the glitches and major issues it is having it DEF brings something different to the MMOG arena with a "FPS-esque" gameplay that doesn't get boring like WoW does.

as long as the game's good to play, i really don't mind who's developing it. let hope that, Petroglyph does it well.

@ graphics whores: If you tried to create an MMO like WoW with Bioshock graphics, you wouldn't be able to run it past 10 FPS lol. Load times would be horrid and your PC would just probably shoot itself after 2 minutes.

there should be a zelda mmo taking place before OoT during the war or before the gods flood hyrule after link leaves. comment plz,and no haters

Lol @ wow bashing, Numero Uno: anyone with a job, a computer and an internet connection can afford $15 (less if you pay for three months or annualy) Number 2: WOW's graphics are not bad, it is an artistic choixe they made, and though the graphics aren't realistic they hold up because of the style, WOW still has some of the most beautiful landscapes you will ever see in a game Number 3: The gameplay is NOT stale! It is an MMORPG!!! THIS IS HOW THEY WORK!!!! It might start boring but get past level 10-15 (depending on class) and you will begin to appreciate the ins and outs of the gameplay.. not to say WOW is flawless, there are some glitches and servers sometimes crash, the quests can get a bit repetitive but get more varied as you go along.... One last thing, whatever this company has in mind it should be an interesting twist on MMOs Maybe as otehrs have said an MMORTS ? who knows

I want to see a good looking MMO. Tabula Rasa is coming close, but how long is it going to take for an MMO to have Oblivion level graphics? That's the main problem I have with World of Warcraft; I'm a graphics whore and WoW looks like it could be running on a GameCube or something. It just doesn't cut it when I'm playing Bioshock and Gears in the same time frame.

Going from making RTS's to MMO'S will wipe out alot of ther community.....and is quite an odd transition too unless its an MMORTS (which i kinda doubt)

Do I smell a MMORTS? Well I guess UaW: Easrth Assault is kinda like a MMORTS, with the conquering the world mode. PS: If I am going to have to pay $15 a month, forget it.

lol it would be funny if they did an mmorts type game lol that would be cool and need plenty of computing power - can you imagine a MASSIVE world and you own just a bit of it and everyone else can attack, defend, form alliances with each other and stuff - freaky stuff right there lol

This is too bad. I wish they would just keep their focus and keep perfecting the RTS style of gameplay.

I enjoyed Empire at War and it;s sequel, they were one of the few good Star Wars games available this decade. I hope they do Empire at War 2, but with that thing with Sega and this MMO it doesn't seem like that will happen any time soon.

How about an unproven designer with no experience in the industry? See, here's my rationale: My lack of experience means it'll take me awhile to get up to speed, but it also means that I am not constrained by pre-existing notions of what is and is not possible. Also, I'm literally a genius and I'm currently taking a course on International Relations & Politics. That'd be a unique angle to come at the industry from, what with all your artists and programmers and other such... people. You're not gonna hire me, are you, Petroglyph? Well just make sure Klepacki's doing the music and I'll buy the game, I expect.

@X-traBigSexy - Earth and Beyond immediately came to mind when I read this, the really interesting bit though is that the designers of that game are working for WW, sorry, Petroglyph. So they must have realised that EAB wasn't exactly brilliant. I was part of the beta as well (which kinda sucked for EU gamers due to the server up-time) and I have to say, it wasn't great. I for one, will be watching with interest here as I for damn sure know Petroglyh can produce damn good RTS's (given they made all the C&Cs up to Generals, that's not that suprising). if they can bring in a top MMO designer and tie it with the undoubted talent for building games, it could be very interesting :D

[SCI-FI Ship-based MMO PLEASE!!???!!!???] they got that still. 2 longtime games actually, Jumpgate and EVE. EVE is boring as watching grass grow, Jumpgate is dated but being worked on for a new version. MUCH MORE FUN TOO! Likely be 2-3 years before anything becomes playable. No rush to wonder what it is.

For those of you not in the loop these guys are pretty much the remnants of Westwood Studios. When the sinister empire that is EA destroyed Westwood a bunch of people left before having their souls devoured. I will be watching this eagerly as I played Westwood's MMO Earth and Beyond from beta until the morons at EA killed it in favor of The Sims Online. SCI-FI Ship-based MMO PLEASE!!???!!!???

Interesting, I hope the person they hire really has some revolutionary ideas. Right now the MMO field is somewhat close in many aspects. It would be interesting if they could create a functional MMO based on the Star Wars universe, although I have a feeling SWG will fight to the death for their 50,000 person fanbase.

Wow. This really sucks. Petroglyph rocks, being that they are mostly made up of the people who made the ORGINAL C&C games and Dune II (one of the FIRST RTS games ever made that was rather functional). But MMO's? Those things get old, REALLY REALLY fast. Espcially when everyone and thier mother is making one. I really hope they reconsider. Unless it was actually like, a gameplay focused MMO and not a stat focused one. Like an RTS-MMO of sorts, or a FPS-MMO like PlanetSide and Huxly. That would be cool. But dear god, NO MORE MMORPGS!

Blazer88
Blazer88

My feeling opn this hasn't changed. making an MMO is a little too risky and I doubt this pay off. More likely to sink a company than help it. Warcraft had 3 things going for it. Blizzard is a popular company, the Warcraft series was also popular and they just happen to relese a really easy to play and very well polished game. But I wish them luck because at this point if you are still playing Warcraft you obviously have a series tolerance to monotony because that game was worn out even before the first not-so great expansion was released. So yeah there definately room for something new, but at the same time I'm not sure the gaming public as whole wants more MMO's, as there are way too many out there or being made already.
