Peter Molyneux doesn't plan to retire -- "I'm just gonna die"

Acclaimed Fable designer adds, "I don't know what life is without making games."

Veteran game designer Peter Molyneux, who created well-known franchises like Dungeon Keeper and Fable, plans to keep on working until the day he dies.

"I'm not retiring--I'm just gonna die," Molyneux told Kotaku in a wide-ranging profile on the acclaimed designer. "I don't know what life is without making games."

Of course, Molyneux is known for his hyperbolic statements--and that point is the focus of Kotaku's profile of the 54-year-old. Still, Molyneux's passion for gaming and the projects he's involved with is well-documented and it wouldn't be surprising if he worked well into old age.

Molyneux quit Microsoft in 2012 and is currently heading up independent UK studio 22Cans, where he is working on Godus, a spiritual successor to Populous that was funded through Kickstarter.

Peter, spoken like a King. it's thanks to this guy and the others like him, that we actually have creative geniuses that don't bow to outside pressure and do what they want in their games. Unfortunately theese pro's are a dying breed, burnt out from all the bullshit the gaming community throw at em for being late patching a game by 1 day, and then end up moving to hardware development, like Carmack.

Men who refuse to stop doing what they love - especially in creative industries - are the men who I look up to.

Yeah, Molyneux promises more than he usually delivers, and that may put many a person off to dismiss him as a man who can't keep promises. But even then, it's not hard to think of how long he's been in the industry, how many game's he made, and how much experience he has in an industry that is changing faster than companies can keep pace.

Mr. Molyneux, you're a figure I look up to. You may hype too much, but at least the experiences you give us are largely enjoyable ones. And for that, I thank you.

I don't know who's buying his games ?? Fable 3 was one of the most sterile games I have ever played.

If you make another dungeon keeper game we may call off the hit....

I heard godus wasnt to good. Populous was though, same with black and White. Syndicate.

Not sure why you would say acclaimed fable, when hes made better games than that.

Out of all his successes failures and missed promises, this is the one thing that I can agree with coming from him... LOL

I'm sure he isn't the only game designer out there that feels the same way and there is nothing wrong with doing what you love for as long as you live.

I think we all will continue to keep games as a part of our lives too. So I think we will be right there along with him. heh

This one time I can agree with Mr Molyneux - for any truly creative individual, retirement is a myth.

Finally starts making a game that will deliver on all of his promises -> Dies halfway through production -> production canceled -> fans are disappointed once again.

A lot of professionals say they'd be happy if they died doing what they love (racing cars, flying, skydiving, snowboarding, making pornos, etc.), but making games is probably the least exciting.

Fair play to the guy though, and good luck to him.

Most of his games are average but the first Fable is still one of my favorite RPG.

Well it's a true sign of someone who loves what they do - old, plenty of money and still pushing themselves, probably into an early grave, to do it. Gotta respect that :)

In Spanish we have a saying: "Hierva mala nunca muere..."

Dungeon Keeper, man that game was so damn good, the original version.  Watch the original intro, it will put a smile on your face.  Great game!  Syndicate and Theme Park also get a mention from me.  Hmmm...so does Populous II, best of the poppy games for me.  If they kept Pete on a leash, like in the old Bullfrog days; he would bring the good stuff :)  We all like abit of slap and tickle...no, just me then :)

Yeah I think that's probably how it will work for me too. It's not like you have to be young to make games.

So you like making games more than playing them?

"Acclaimed Fable designer"

This is insulting considering his older games are more significant and superior.  Not much respect for whoever done that opening tag line.

Could it be the first truth Peter ever told? Hmm to be seen.

I respect his passion but he builds hype upon lies, Fable 2/3 were meant to be ground-breaking and face melting but frankly they were nothing short of average.

@console_war_vet @PlatinumPaladin  id rather do something i hate for 5 minutes tell it to fck off and then go do something i did like, then die. If you hate it? dont stick around. Why live miserably?

@mattcake @Aelfredus  LOL. The all knowing Google translated it into "Boil evil never dies..."

Though it did suggest that the correct spelling is "Hierba mala nunca muere" and the translation of that is "Weed never dies..."
