Persona gets simultaneous retail, PSN launch

Atlus remake of 1997 PSone RPG will hit PSN and store shelves on September 22 for $40; boxed edition bundled with two-disc soundtrack.

When the PSP Go launches October 1, Atlus wants to have one of its games immediately playable for the UMD-less handheld. Today, the company announced that Shin Megami Tensei: Persona will launch simultaneously over the PlayStation Network and in stores on September 22 for $40.

School's back in session after a long vacation.

The upcoming edition of Persona is a remake of the 1997 PlayStation role-playing game. The revamped version--showcased at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo--includes a fully relocalized script, a reworked user interface, quicker battles, an expanded soundtrack, and voice work exclusive to the North American release of the game. The PSP version will also feature game balance adjustments and new animated sequences by Kazuma Kaneko (a designer behind Devil May Cry 3).

When Persona launches, every retail copy of the game will include a full two-disc musical score composed by Shoji Meguro, the songsmith behind the original game, the forthcoming RPG Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, and several other franchise titles. However, Atlus has said the exclusive boxed edition is only available for a limited time at launch.

I am glad because the localization for the PS1 version was TERRIBLE. Really excited to get it how it was meant to be seen and played.

c'mon guys, this is a class A game and not some trashy shovel ware. At least, give it some credit. With all these attitude, no wonder why we'd always get third parties everywhere. A lot of people have been looking forward to this for a long time now. So its a remake, that hasn't stop games from being a hit, did it? Expensive?--it should be 'coz I'm expecting something substantial, don't you?

You guys who keep saying that it's a little expensive know that it's not the only PSP game selling for $40, right? Look at Gamestop's website, there's a good handful selling at $40 (like FF: Dissida) without any extras.

I loved Persona when it was originally released but I've played a ton of games since then that have expanded the genre. For 40 dollars I would expect a lot more than a re-done PS1 game and a soundtrack.

Actually I just remembered that me and my bro share each other's PSN accounts so we both get a copy of every game we buy and split the price. So $20 each for Persona isn't so bad at all. That is thing I love about the PSN.

i own this for the PS1 and i really dont want to buy it again(i liked it but i didnt like it THAT much)

I'm praying this reaches the european PSN, as it is really lagging behind the US one, I am aware it's possible to buy US PSN content regardless of where you live but it's still a pain, and requires multi-accounting.

its 40 bucks for a freaking hour-intensive RPG. This ain't no small indie game.

I've seen the previews of the game, and even though i own both P1 and P2:EP for the PS1, i would still consider paying this price for the game. However, i would still much rather see a release of Innocent Sin. Times have changed, and there's little to no excuse for an attempt at releasing the game stateside.

Considering the price of the originals on E-Bay and the like, $40 is actually something of a deal, especially with the updated content. I actually have all of the original Persona games for the PS1; looks like their collectability is about to take a hit now that the series is catching on and entering Remake City.

are you ****ing serious?? When I saw this, I thought we were gonna get the original version available for download on the PSN, not the fricking UMD-less version of the game.

@Evil_Zio This makes sence. Thanks! I'm looking forward to try P1! @kavadias1981 I don't think so because $40 price is for version with two disks ost and nice case. It cant.t be that the downloadable version with just a game has the same price. Probably around $30.

kavadias1981

$40 for a downloadable game? With all the processes like packaging, shipping and retailers out of the way you would think they could slash the price more than that. Thanks but no thanks.

@LeoGoBezerk Actually, there were two Persona 2 games out there: Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. IS would be the one that never got outside of Japan but EP made it to other markets. And P1 and 2 are more straight up RPG than 3 or 4. No social links, no stats to improve outside of combat, and everyone could enter and use the Velvet Room. Persona 1 got out of control though because you had to worry about party formation in terms of range to the enemy and to guess if an enemy would be weak to melee attacks, a spell or just bullets. Persona 2 was better, got rid of the formation headaches, stuck to just one weapon type for each character and even added fusion spells. Though you had hit a button to get everyone to stop moving at the end of their turns, otherwise they would do the same thing over and over again (like healing the same character every turn.)

I never played the original Persona and I know that second one even never reached USA because of content. But still i hope that this game is very like the third and 4th one.

I didn't enjoy the original Persona much for several reasons, like the massive city map which I hated and guessing game I had to play with the reach of abilities and weapons. And the fact that they butchered some characters (I'm looking at you Mark) and cut out half the game in the localization. But I may just buy this because it looks like most of those reasons have been squashed.

@Shadowysea07 I'll agree they could have found a better fit. The problem is finding an actor that can deliver a believable line and can emote properly while simultaneously fitting the build of the character. Probably not an easy task, though I wouldn't know from personal experience. However, when grading a voice actor I can't help but feel it should be their ability to emote properly rather then whether their voice fits the character or not. In that regard I think the voice acting was solid, however as you say I agree that the voices didn't match very well with the characters.

shadowysea07
shadowysea07

@Saije just the ones who voiced the bear and the girl with the fans. can't thin of their names right now DX. their voices were awful and didn't fit their characters. especially the bears after he changes forms. i didn't care for the rest of them either. but i blame that on the script it wasn't their fault most of the dialog was lost in translation. the battle mechanics were way better than p3's retarded ai's though XD. mitsuru's stupidly always used ice spells man i never used her again after i got her. p4 has the better battle system while p3 has the better voice cast.

The Game is solid, but if your a person with a low tolerance for dated graphics then its not for you. I know I always thought I could play games with dated graphics, but you never realize how much graphical improvements have spoiled you until you sit down to do just that. @Shadowysea07 Wow you really thought the VAs were bad? I thought they did a very good job of delivering a convincing performance and drawing you into the game. Now if you just didn't like their voices that is different, but then, that is a personal problem.

@BigBacon87 Well, the original game was a shining example of a really bad localization. Two big examples being that the "Snow Queen" quest (a side quest you could play instead of doing the main story) was removed and a good number of characters being editted or even re-drawn to make them more western. Google "Revelations Persona Mark" and you'd probably see what I mean. And imagine that that game was at the same price of other PSX games back in the day. So $40 bucks for a total revamp, both visual and gameplay wise, with two CDs if you buy the boxed version? Yeah, that's fine by me.

I LOVE how Atlus likes to include neat things like the plushie from that one game and Soundtracks and stuff for the normal price. I wish more companies would take a hint. I plan on getting this. I never got to play 1 or 2.

Am I the only one looking at this article and saying really? A $40 dollar remake? Now before you go freaking out no I did not play the original Im not a big straight-up RPG fan so it's possible you guys all just got rocked by this game and think $40 bucks is fine by you but Im still sayin.. really? 40 bucks?

I'm glad everybody is excited about the original Persona, but I hope they're prepared for a drastic change from 3 & 4 as it's got quite a few differences..some that might turn off those used to the gameplay of 3 & 4. It's still a spectacular game nonetheless. Just giving a little heads up :)

i never played the first one but it sounds good. i just hope the va's are good unlike p4's. they had probably the 2 worst va's i've ever heard. p3 was good. but the ai were really stupid
