Persona 5 announced for PlayStation 3

Latest entry in Atlus' role-playing series coming exclusively to PS3 in Japan next year; Persona Q: Shadows of the Labyrinth revealed for 3DS.

by

Today during a special Persona event, Atlus officially announced Persona 5 for the PlayStation 3. The game launches during winter 2014 in Japan. Details about a Western release were not provided.

Atlus released a short trailer for Persona 5 (below), which does not feature any gameplay to speak of, but does include images of shackles and a series of chairs. Check out the Persona 5 teaser website for more.

Person 5 is the fifth game in the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series, which dates back more than a decade. Persona 4 for the PlayStation 2 is the latest core entry in the series, which hit the PlayStation 2 in 2008 and PlayStation Vita last year as Persona 4 Golden.

The special Persona event today also brought news of Persona Q: Shadows of the Labyrinth, an all-new entry in the series for 3DS, which will launch in June 2014 in Japan. It will be the first entry in the Persona series available on a Nintendo platform.

Atlus also today announced rhythm game Persona 4: Dancing All Night, a collaboration between Atlus and Dingo, for PlayStation Vita. It will launch in Japan next fall. Lastly, Atlus announced P4U: Persona 4 The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold, a fighting game set to launch in Japan for PS3 in 2014. It is a follow-up to last year's Persona 4 Arena.

I was definitely going to keep my PS3 through March and beyond with no timetable as Dark Souls 2 is coming and you know how you can't really just beat the game and then put it down. Also want to keep it with no PS4 backwards compatibility. I will have a PS4 before Persona 5 comes out but the PS3 will not feel neglected.

Why the hell is Persona getting all the console love? WTF happen to  making a Shin megami tensei on a console? Maybe because persona the dumb down brother of Tensei and all the lemmings keep eating it up.

Man forget Atlus , even JRPGS are getting dumb down now......smh

Well Atlus did release Persona 4 at the end of the PS2's life cycle so I'm not surprised that we didn't get Persona 5 till now. PS3 is still getting a ton of games in 2014 like Tales of Symphoia HD, FFX HD, KH 2.5 HD Remix, Tales of Xillia 2, and many more. Though it probably won't come to the states till 2015 so it would be a nice farewell to the PS3 and onto next gen.

PS3 still has bullets to shoot.

This is a great reason to keep the PS3. For people wondering if it is worth holding on to. A western release is possible. PS3 and PSvita versions could be very likely. If Altus made this game cross-buy it would be wonderful. Get the PS3 version and be able to continue your game on the PSvita would be awesome.

If Sony holds a January event then maybe we will know. Or have to wait until E3 2014. But this is great news. I enjoyed Persona 4 on PSvita. So if this makes a western release I buy it.

Great news.

@AuGZA  Its common practice for JRPGs to be scarce at the beginning of a consoles life, Sony in particular, and then get swarmed with release towards the end.

You had what, Folklore for the first year? Valkyria Chronicles and a few ports within the first 3? And now look at the PS3 library, Disgaea 3,4 D2, Atelier Series, Mugen Souls, 3D dot hero, etc. etc.

Guess it has to do with cost, and how little JRPGs tend to sell. Your average Tales game usually gets about a few 100,000 US sales and thats it. They cant afford to work on the consoles early in their lives.

ABOUT DAMN TIME!

Why do they always release at the end of the consoles lifespan?

Persona 5 is the sixth game in the series, not the fifth. Persona 2 comprised of two games. But then again, it's Eddie writing this article, it has to have a glaring mistake in it.

Also, something for people to realize who may not know it:
Winter 2014 is December 2014 - March 2015 NOT January 2014-March 2014, like some people are thiknking. That is way to close after the announcement anyway.

Good god, it's about fucking time!  It took 7 years for a Persona game to finally be released on PS3 and not PS2...Hallelujah

Well maybe it's just me being crazy but P4A English was released like a week or so after the Japanese version and the English version was on the Japanese version when it shipped so maybe there is a chance we might get it at the same time......Then again that was fighting game still it had plenty of text.

I wonder how long I'll have to wait for a western release. That vita dance game sounds terribly unappealing to me. Still good news.

These games are one of the reasons I tend to stick with Japanese-based game consoles. Can never get them anywhere else (not including PC emulators of course).

Been following the (chaotic) development, jackass? Might have never happened if Sega hadn't stepped in. So an official release schedule IS news ya dum-dum.

Rizer

@KenderDragon  I know right? God only knows how long they've been developing it, though. If it really has ben years in the making then it might to late to program it for the PS4. I kinda wish they did though. If they had, it might have made a killer launch title or a least a marked entry of the console's first year.

@divinejester @AuGZA Yes, I bought a second PS3 just for this....I got into this series late (bought Persona 3 Portable for my Vita on a whim), and I fell in love so hard.

I love JRPGs, but they seem to be down to a trickle these days. Can't wait until a couple of years pass and they move on the PS4 (and maybe X1 with the ease of porting this gen.),

dom28

@AuGZA Because some of the best games come out near the end of console's lifespan.

Ragnawind
Ragnawind

@Bellum_Sacrum They also called the game Person 5 in the third paragraph, where they made the mistake you mentioned.

Redskyze

@RabbiSchmuley Persona has managed a decent sized fanbase over here, so I am fairly confident that we'll get it. Then again.....SEGA bought Atlas, and well it seems getting games localized with them is 50/50.

Jestersmiles
Jestersmiles

@WolfGrey @Jestersmiles  how? The last shin megami tensei games (the main series) have been on handheld but Persona gets the console treatment, why is that?

You do know that Persona is a spin off of the main series....right?

divinejester
divinejester

@Redskyze No the reason the jrpgs dont tend to come to MS systems is due to it having terrible sales in Japan, not porting issues. And like with anime ultimately the Japanese consumer is the main target of the developer with Western markets an after though. So unless the xbone sells very well, Sony and Nintendo will continue to get the lion share of rpgs.

deathstream

@dom28 @AuGZA

That close to the end gets a game ignored.  You end up with a series with a small, but devoted fan base.

csward
csward

@Jestersmiles Yes, and it is better than the main series IMO. It is now their flagship title. Also. to support the extra development costs of console games it has to be able to sell enough to be on the console. I'm not sure if the "main series" would do well on console, unless the really upped the budget.

Redskyze
Redskyze

@divinejester @Redskyze While that is true, localization is a different beast altogether, which is why games that were PS3 exclusives in Japan go multiplatform in the US. For this to happen though, Microsoft needs to show an initial interest like they did when they went after the Tales Series and Hinorobu Sakaguchi, or for publishers to notice an interest in JRPGS in America. If they thought a profit was there, a port would happen during localization, and this generation porting is a very simple matter according to most devs, so it may in fact be more common than it was last gen.

All in all, if down the road, Persona 6 or the next Tales game take a Multiplatform approach in the U.S., I'll be happy, if not then I'll still be happy...but I'l need to put a PS4 next to My Xbox One (It's going to happen eventually, after all the only way to win the console war....is to own them all).

@deathstream @dom28 @AuGZA

Uh just no. You have no clue at all deathstream , but you usually don't anyway.

Persona 4 more than sold well. Stock was very hard to come by in most stores for months. And i am sure the 9.0 it received, and the awards, just meant it was ignored right?

Clueless.

GOGOHeadray
GOGOHeadray

@deathstream @dom28 @AuGZA It's more about money; SMT seris is a niche title in what is now a niche genre (JRPG) which rarely has big time titles on home consoles. Putting it on the PS4 is a fools errand die to the install base on the system.
