Payday 2 won't have microtransactions

Overkill Software says "No. No. God, I hope not" about microtransactions for upcoming heist-themed action game.

Overkill Software's upcoming heist-themed action game Payday 2 will not feature microtransactions, lead designer David Goldfarb has confirmed with GameSpot.

Asked if Overkill Software anticipated putting microtransactions in the game, Goldfarb bluntly stated, "No. No. God, I hope not. Never. No."

Payday 2 launches in August for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Payday 2 includes a number of features not found in 2011's original Payday: The Heist, including a skill and progression system. In addition, the game features four different professions, each with its own unique abilities.

For more, check out GameSpot's demo of the game with commentary from Goldfarb embedded below.

It would seem that some of you do not know the difference between micro-transactions and DLC.  Micro-transactions are typically items that will give a specific weapon(s) a new skin color, the ability to unlock all content without having to play the game, etc.  DLC, downloadable content, are typically larger pieces of content that include new levels, new game modes, etc.  Personally, I miss the old model that items that are now often micro-transactions were awarded free to the player for completing things in the game and DLC were expansions that would often include new single player and/or multi-player content.

I would hate developers to think that they cannot expand their game but the problem is there are too many games that sell multi-player maps without having the players to support it.  At least if more games had the ability to fill maps with AI like they used to like how Gears of War does then you can play while waiting for real players to join.

This article says the new one has features the first one didn't, and lists one of those as Progression system. The first one has that.

Well, that's reassuring.

Considering it's not an EA game, yeah, I think we can rest easy.

How far have gaming fallen when a game not having microtransactions is a selling point

First, it was Respawn now Overkill. I hope more developers follow their lead, and maybe games can go back to being a hobby with less corporate pigs trying to get a cut from every damn thing. Yes, I'm pointing at you Microscum, and your Xbone that turns into an Xbrick after 24 hrs.!

I think I know why I'm so hyped about this game now. It was made with integrity. Which is kinda ironic, considering the premise...

Pubs are starting to make a point of telling us that they don't have micro transactions. Seems like the gaming community is getting through.

I just hope the game will be more fun for SP cause I barely play the first one, maybe I just haven't played it enough though :p

@darkcomedian Both $6 and $60 games now have microtransactions and "in-app" purchases to "heighten" and "increase" your "gaming" experience. It's not hard to imagine a $30 title doing the same.

@darkcomedian I hate how people assume that a lower price tag means a lesser game.

@darkcomedian It's a nice step to confirm as it is an increasingly annoying practice for publishers to utilize microtransactions. I like the idea of knowing that if/when I buy a game new at retail I won't be getting a half-finished game which will require I purchase DLC or microtransactions in order to feel like I'm actually getting the complete experience. Simply confirming this makes it far more likely I will purchase this game.

@emperioxGhosts is confirmed to have miicrotransactions. It's a business practice all CoD games will have following BO2.

@d3nR Actually Overkill Software are the developers, which is why they added "I hope not", since the publisher 505 Games could basically order Overkill to insert microtransactions if 505 Games wanted to.

I agree with Relvar, that it's odd that they need to point this out or rather that the journalist needed to ask about it. That's like asking if a PC game supports keyboard and mouse controls. It should be obvious that having microtransactions in a normal retail game isn't the norm, but rather the exception. Clearly that's about to change, if more and more journalists feel the need to ask these questions and developers say anything but "of course not".

@d3nR Sadly your wrong - this is a classic trick that's used a lot in politics and business. What they are doing is trying to normalize microtransactions. By saying "look this game is special and doesn't have it" is a way of pandering (instead of for your votes, for your dollars) while at the same time continuing to do what you oppose.

@lingo56 Game isn't meant to be played SP. The SP was just a practice mode essentially. Once you get good at that jump online and play with some good friends.

@KommonSinse @lingo56 Its single player also. Sort of the way Left 4 Dead was. I got it through PS plus. Its the reason I got really interested in the game.
