Payday 2 Developer Posted a Countdown and Some Strange Audio on Its Site

Overkill Software published a countdown timer with a ticking clock and a couple of people talking about an oxymoron.

by

Overkill Software, developer of first-person heist game Payday 2, posted a countdown on its website with some interesting sounds to accompany it. The timer says "Day 01" and is set to expire 34 days from now. Notably, that date is the anniversary of the release of Payday 2.

There's an animated image behind the countdown timer, which shows a wall and some sunlight shining through blinds. A radiator stands in the bottom corner. There's a light switch and a door to the right. A vent is visible on the top left of the screen. Occasionally, something passes through the light source and the sunlight flickers.

When you load into the page, the sound of a ticking clock starts playing, then a record or radio program begins. Two people then talk about a personal trainer, a gym, and oxymorons. At the end, you can hear footsteps and a door opening and closing. There doesn't seem to be any meaning behind it.

Other than that, all that appears on the page are buttons that lead to the developer's Facebook and Twitter accounts.

It's not known if the countdown timer has anything to do with Payday 2. Overkill recently announced Xbox One and PlayStation 4 enhanced versions of the game last month, but the developer hasn't said anything about how far along in the development cycle it is. Payday 2 DLC also launched in June, so Overkill could be teasing new content coming in August. Of course, the developer could be working on something completely different. Keep an eye on GameSpot for more news as it emerges.

Can you make anything of the timer or the audio? What do you want Overkill to do next? Let us know in the comments!

Maybe finally we are getting 7 day heists for Payday 2?

It better not be payday 3 though. That audio on the site is very very interesting though. Very excited to see what the guys do. Just hoping its a new IP though, and not DLC or Payday 3.

Well, let's hope it's something worth the excitement.

I get home after a literature exam and what is the first thing I see? The mention of an oxymoron.

What are the chances of it being Payday 3?

Honestly, not too excited.

Purchased this on old gen, and - with the piss poor support they've shown for consoles - there's no way in hell that I'd purchase this for new gen. If you can't show support for a platform, don't release on that platform. I'd have rather purchased the game on PC, later on down the road, but since I can't justify my previous purchase at this point, I won't be making another.

Whatever it is, it will happen before GTA Online has any heists.

So is this the countdown before they finally take the console crowd seriously, and treat us like the paying customers we were?

I want to hear about the rest of the updates and DLC coming to consoles, including all the free missions that the PC version got 6 months to a year ago. And I mean on the Xbox 360 and PS3, not only in the next gen console re-release version.

I heard the console DLCs and updates couldn't happen because the update was too large for Xbox 360.  They couldn't solve that problem in a year's time?  Find a way to break it up into smaller updates?

An apology or some kind of decent explanation would be nice too.  Otherwise, Payday 3 will probably sell like crap on consoles, especially on Xbox.

If you look closely at the page source, you can see a space set aside labeled "YouTube background video".

Maybe some sort of trailer in the future?

It's the countdown until they finally patch the 360 version.

Whatever this is, it will be released before heists in GTAO.

@HappyFunRun  Why does it need to be a new IP, they have just scratched the surface on the Payday IP, and it's unique in the market?

@SkytheWiz1 Blame Microsoft. The thing is, when a patch is released for PC, they can just release it. That's it. If they release a patch for 360, they have to pass Microsoft certification process which firstly limits patches to a set amount of MB. Given Overkill patches are rather large, that means they have to put in unnecesarry work into dividing patches into smaller increments. With that they have to pay more money as although MS removed charging developers per patch release in June 2013, it's sadly isn't retroactive, meaning games released before then still have to pay. Meaning if they were to release all 30(thus far) updates on the 360, each update would need to be split into at least 2, in addition to that each update can cost the company upwards of 10's of thousands of dollars. If it were in your hands would you be willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars just to release something they should be able to do so for free?

@spacecadet25 And somehow it becomes about Xbox at the end there?

Look, I feel for ya. But not getting DLC shouldn't ruin your opinion on a game. That's just silly. It'd be cool if you got it, but if the game itself was good, that is what should matter.

Personally I thought the game was flawed, but not getting DLC isn't a very good reason to suddenly hate a game or it's developer.

@cjbos81 I'm with spacecadet.
At least GTAO has been giving updates (and for free); 360 version of Payday 2 hasn't been updated, at all, even with paid DLC.

@cjbos81  The GTA heist issue isn't nearly as bad as the much longer term lack of console support for Payday 2.

@Tiwill44 I would like to divert your attention to Battlefield 4, which still has 2 DLCs to release, and Battlefield: Hardline that's coming in a couple of months.

@Tiwill44 This is true, but it doesn't rule out a possible announcement for a Payday game coming in late 2015 (Would be 2 full dev years for Payday 2) or 2016. Unlikely though.

@CruorComa @SkytheWiz1  The few tens of thousands of dollars they would have paid on patches pales in comparison to how much money they won't make on future installments, b/c they have greatly alienated their console audience.

That's like if a restaurant that has the toilets back up, and it costs tens of thousands to fix it, and they say "it doesn't matter if it was unexpected yet important, that will cost money for the clean up and fix so screw it, customers will just come back anyway to our nasty restaurant, right?"

Completely flawed reasoning.  You have to support your products.  Every product with your name on it is a reflection of all your other products.

@CruorComa @SkytheWiz1 I did, at first, blame Microsoft. But what kept them from updating the PS3 until just recently? Also, the game was released after June 2013 (it came out in August), so if what you're saying is true, it still shouldn't affect them.

My final conclusion on it, though, was that Overkill and 505 should have been aware of the issues beforehand and simply not released the game. I hold them with the majority of the blame because they released the game in a field where it is expected of developers to support their games; even if there is no DLC, it is more than reasonable to expect them to at least fix issues that were missed by their QA team.

@mordeaniis @spacecadet25  Normally I would agree with you, but not with this game, for a few reasons:

1.  Before it came out they admitted the game was short (and therefore was only $40), however before the release they promised a year's worth of DLC (at least 5 packs).  So for me, the promise of DLC on the very short game was part of the purchase decision for me.  They never said it was going to be for PC only.

2.  A little extra DLC for another system, not normally a big deal (like the extra hour of stuff for AC4 or Watch Dogs on Playstation, or extra level in Payday 1).  But on PC they have released so many DLC levels for Payday 2 that they have practically doubled the size of the game, and most of those levels were released for free.  So yeah, I think console people can take issue with that.

3.  They promised a free upcoming DLC level to those who pre-ordered, as a thank you.  They did that for PC but not for consoles.  Another slap in the face.

4. Yes of course I bring up Xbox specifically.  Xbox has not seen any updates or DLC (besides the crappy lootbag), Playstation has seen updates and DLC now.  The fact you take issue with that mention tells me you know little about what's going on with this game.

@CapnXtraObvious  Just a couple things, really. If you're genuinely interested, PC changelog is here, PS3 here. Might want to grab a sandwich first, even the PS3 log is a novella.

@SkytheWiz1 @cjbos81

PC version gets updated constantly every week. Probably ain't worth it for console peasants.

@SkytheWiz1 That's what you get for playing on the inferior consoles. I'm not sure what you expected.

@saltful @SkytheWiz1 @cjbos81 Calling people console peasants is stupid. Using a console is a choice. I personally own a 360 and have built a pc. I use my 360 for on-line games like GTA or Fifa also COD would be applicable in this situation although I personally don't like it. I use my Pc for mostly single player games like TES or the witcher but also play bf4 on the Pc. Saying someone is a peasant for owning a console is stupid as consoles are a reliable way to play the large majority of games and a more sensible option for many people.

SkytheWiz1

@Tiwill44

Look, I didn't buy the game for mods or visuals. I understand if I wanted that, I could invest in a PC. I wanted to play with friends, most of which have a 360 and not a PC. Given that the overwhelming majority of developers continue to support their games post-release, I expected Overkill and 505 to - you know - stand behind their product.

And can we stop it with this kind of reply? Again, I know PC generally gives the greatest experience, tech-wise. Most people know this, and flaunting it just makes people look like jackasses.

Again, my main issue is that I'm still receiving every single day one bug that I've ever encountered, almost a year later, something that I've never experienced in any game, on any platform. There was no reason to believe that any platform would miss out on patches.
