PAX '07: Penny Arcade's Rain-Slick sprinkling XBLA

Adventure/role-playing game to be available through Microsoft's downloadable game service.

Yesterday at the Penny Arcade Expo, Hothead Games at long last took the wraps off the first episode of its much-anticipated upcoming game based on the work of Web comic pioneers Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness. In the course of that presentation, Hothead Games president Vlad Ceraldi revealed that Rain-Slick would be coming to a "next-gen platform."

At a follow-up panel today, Hothead Games revealed the next-gen platform in question would be the Xbox 360, and that the entire Penny Arcade Adventures series would be available for download from Xbox Live Marketplace as episodes are released. The game was previously slated to be available through digital distribution for PCs running Windows and Linux, as well as Mac systems.

Ceraldi also noted that the game would be available for "under $20," but that an actual price point hasn't yet been finalized. One other choice tidbit coming out of today's panel was that "nerdcore" hip-hop pioneer MC Frontalot would be laying down an exclusive track for Rain-Slick.

Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness Episode 1 is slated to arrive before the end of the year, with subsequent episodes to follow every few months.

Ctrl+Alt+Del is way better than Penny Arcade, but I still like it. Won't be getting this though.

"Penny Arcade isn't nearly as cool as it's creators seem to think it is." Maybe, but you can't deny their popularity. Like it or not, they are the leaders of todays nerds/geeks.

That is pretty cool but I prefer VGcats though. Penny Arcade is obviously more popular but I get more of a laugh from VGcats.

as strange as it may be... this is one of the few games I'm super excited about this year  hearing about the XBL setup is pretty nice, but I'd like to think something below 20 bucks isn't too much to ask.

250 Microsoft Credits is good enough for an episode...

Oh, I hope it's at least under $15. Saying it'll be under $20 is a long range for XBLA games. Most usually cost between $5-$10.

I think episodic content over XBLA is a cool idea, as long as it is not an expensive idea! :P

@Dylanius because it was from PAX dummy.

I was kinda hoping it would come out on the pc, just as something new and interesting. But meh, I'll wait until October (I think it is) until the new season of Sam and Max starts.

Everyone who said that they're waiting for good games on XBLA.. Haven't you heard about Castlevania: SotN, Bomberman Live and Alien Hominid HD? Those games are sweeeeeeeeeeeet.

sounds expensive, especially as its an episode, doesnt look that great either to be honest from the screenshots, give me sensi soccer and speedball 2 any day

The screenshots look promising. "under $20" means you can count on spending at least $10, otherwise they would have said under $10.

PA is a funny series and I enjoy it but.. God why is it getting SO MUCH pr? I mean.. my god. Think the gaming sites would blow their load over a different comic-book-based video game?

I'm still waiting for some good Live Arcade games.

I love how people don't actually read the news post. Under $20 does not mean the game will cost exactly $20, it means it will cost UNDER $20. People are bloomin' crazy round these parts!

If they plan on charging 1200 points for every episode or something equally outrageous I think I'll pass...

UNDER $20 DOES NOT EQUAL $20! Read the whole thing people.

Just a touch expensive there, I may have to pass....

Awesome! I love PA. So far, we don't know the depth to which this game goes. From what I've seen, it's not just another Live Arcade game, so people complaining about the price really need to wait a bit before going over the edge here. But considering how seriously the PA guys take their games, I'm pretty certain we won't have another Lumines Live on our hands.

$20,that's a bit too much.I thought Microsoft put the "around $5" price regulation. But I guess this game is "special".

@Outlawlaw Episodes so far have been incredibly short. It's like paying $60 for that King Kong game again.

i saw the video of the stage demo at PAX... the game looks pretty cool. the humor and comic style of PA with elements of an RPG

Outlawlaw

How is 20 bucks steep? 3 Episodes at 20 dollars a pop = $60. You pay 60 dollars for a full game on any 'current-gen' system. 60=60. :P Sounds 'standard' and not steep.

jojo1983
jojo1983

So it will be 20 bucks an episode? That is kinda steep, but that's about the price you would pay if you went to the store to buy it for PC

Fighter_of_Foo
Fighter_of_Foo

This is great. I was just gonna get it on the PC, but this is easier. But now a lot of people unfamiliar with PA will get it and might be disappointed. Oh, and Corvin, $20 was the set price for the PC version, so it would be unfair to price them differently. To me it only seems like more because of the points.

Cool, this looks pretty good. Too bad about the nerdcore, though. It's not... metal. Hardly brutal at all. I'm a huge nerd, by the way.

Corvin

For an "episodic" style game $20 for a version that has no box or disc on XBLA... seems a bit steep. I guess it depends on just how much game is in there.

I'm getting this for PC no doubt, as it's coming this fall for PC/Mac/Linux, and should run great on a standard laptop. If you watch the videos, they did a great job with the point and click interface that I would rather use a mouse for anyway. Still, nice to have options. This is turn based combat fyi, with the ability to block attacks in real time. I think they might have found a decent combat system from the looks of the videos. Either way, Penny Arcade fans are in for a real treat, as I can't wait for the writing myself.
