Painfully difficult Flappy Bird generates $50,000 per day in ad revenue

Developer Dong Nguyen reveals just how lucrative his new chart-topping mobile game really is.

The delightful yet crushingly difficult mobile game Flappy Bird generates an average of $50,000 per day in advertising revenue, creator Dong Nguyen revealed to The Verge. The chart-topping iOS and Android game, which is free to download, has become a veritable hit, with more than 50 million downloads to date.

Flappy Bird's premise is simple: you tap the screen anywhere to make a pixelated bird move upwards. Hitting any of the green pipes on your path means game over. The game's only goal is to get the highest score possible.

"The reason Flappy Bird is so popular is that it happens to be something different from mobile games today, and is a really good game to compete against each other," Nguyen said. "People in the same classroom can play and compete easily because [Flappy Bird] is simple to learn, but you need skill to get a high score."

Nguyen said he doesn't plan to add anything more to the game, like an in-app purchase option to disable ads--which can prove disastrous to your concentration when they appear.

"Flappy Bird has reached a state where anything added to the game will ruin it somehow, so I'd like to leave it as is," he said. "I will think about a sequel but I'm not sure about the timeline."

Finally, Nguyen revealed that Flappy Bird's main bird was inspired by Super Mario Bros.' "Cheep Cheep," and the game's green pipes are also an homage to Nintendo's work, he said.

Had to try out this stupid Flappy Bird game everyone's been talking about. It should be called "Ad Attack" as I'm not sure what's more challenging - getting the bird past the blatantly ripped off green pipes from Super Mario Bros or not being distracted by the constant bombardment of ads.

Ha, if I had to choose a difficult game to play, I would have gone with Dark Souls or Demon Souls. Those games have style, unlike this copy-cat. But on the other hand, I don't think I could blame the. when they are living in such pirate's paradise. Why waste your time to create something new when you could take the shortcut and rip it off from a classic?

Wasn't "Line Bird" that was out years ago the exact same thing?

Lmfao, it's the Dark Souls of mobile games! I've seen people doing Vines and rapping and "modding" it to include Chuck Norris sending the flappy bird smashing through all the pipes and whatnot. I'm all like "oh, so that's the new popular thing now. Nope, don't care about it".

Excellent. Will he use some of the money to design something decent to play?

Never heard of it and I'm glad. I'd hate to know that I would be helping him make that kind of money for some trash mobile game. I think this is the very reason I don't play mobile games, and why I never, ever, will.

Actually, if you add an option to disable the sound it would be a lot better. Don't like hearing it while listening to music.

My friend's high score of 110 makes me sad.

So its the helicopter game put onto mobile devices, wish I would've come up with this stupidly successful idea.

I'm confused by Flappy Bird...I've tried it and it's entertaining for a short while, I suppose, in that it delivers a singular punch of gameplay stylings, but at the same time, there are countless other games out there that are better and get no attention, because somehow, they missed the trendy boat.

Nothing against the developer, though, more power to him. He knocked it out of the park, even if completely by accident.

As I've said on Disqus, this game was created for you to fail.  Tapping of the bird gives it only about a 10% success rate of ever passing through the green pipes.....this is just enough satisfaction to keep you playing.  I honestly deleted the game after I played it about 4 times mainly because I saw the direction the developer was going with it.  If he would have cut the amount of height the bird jumps every time you tap him by 1/2, than the game might have some playability.  The moment I played this reminded me exactly of this:

......and now he's making money from your addiction.

Great, something else for people to do instead of actually learning.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I like...this...uhm...game?

Flappy Bird, a game as cruel as reading a Ride to Hell: Retribution fan fiction novel, but without being unfair to the player. Every time you die it's your own fault! Don't blame the pipe! Every single pipe can kill you if you're not careful enough. Every single pipe needs to be defeated to continue on your long and lonesome journey. Flappy Bird will test your skills, more than any other mobile game!

Yes, it really is the Dark Souls of mobile games! I defeated 36 pipes so far, and there will be more...there will be blood!

"The reason Flappy Bird is so popular is that it happens to be something different from mobile games today" HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT WITH A STRAIGHT FACE?! This is just a carbon copy of the helicopter game made decades ago!

i was introduced to this yesterday funnily enough and the first thing i noticed was at the start of every game there's an add that takes up a quarter of the screen for a few seconds i'm not surprised it makes so much money off of that

the game on the other hand is just a poor knock off my 3 minutes playing it were enough

"timeline" thats funny. i started playing it yesterday and its a purtty fun game. i dont have anything negative to say about it.

Sometimes looking at things objectively will help you determine the reality you exist in. In this case, we have a man who has monetized clicking on a screen. He is making $50,000 per day just to direct addiction prone people to advertisers. The world is disturbing when you think of how many man-hours are wasted on a product that essentially serves no other meaning than to sell other products. That's just unheard of stupidity manifested by our parasitic culture.

I just googled the game....if you can call this a game
what a great way to put your moronic minds to use
this ani't no different than a NES game where you had to shoot at the guy on the screem for him to move...except that game was actually good

it's funny why some of you wonder why there are so many bad games out there
maybe if you stopped playing them thing would change!!!!!

hahahahahahahahah :P

@jimmy_russell I'd be happy if I made 50 000 dollars a year and he makes it in one day from a silly mobile game with lots of annoying ads. The world sure is strange.
