Pac-Man Championship Edition chomps XBLA

Revamped edition arrives tomorrow with new modes, midgame maze changes, and 800 Microsoft point price tag.

Ordinarily, a follow-up to one of gaming's all-time biggest franchises--one created with the original designer's participation, no less--would be subject to months or possibly years of hype.

However, this morning Microsoft and Namco Bandai announced and dated Pac-Man Championship Edition, a revamped version of the arcade classic designed with Pac-creator Toru Iwatani's help. Interested gamers won't have long to wait to go hands-on with the Championship Edition, as it is currently set for release on the Xbox Live Arcade tomorrow at 2 a.m. Pacific.

Pac-Man Championship Edition makes a number of alterations to the traditional Pac-formula. First and foremost, the game's mazes have been designed with a horizontal emphasis to take better advantage of widescreen TVs. On top of that, the mazes will change during gameplay, with players able to enlarge a cramped level by eating bonus fruit. Pac-Man will also be able to string together ghost-eating combos across multiple power pellets.

In addition to the main championship mode, players will be able to try five more modes that tweak the rules and impose five- or 10-minute time limits on the action. The tweaks include invisible walls, warp speed, a mode "inspired by the streets of Manhattan," and an overall course that combines aspects of the other modes.

The game was created to coincide with the Pac-Man World Championship, the finals of which were held today. According to Microsoft, the competition ended with Iwatani himself crowning 27-year-old Carlos Daniel Borrego as the winner. Hailing from Pachuca, Mexico, Borrego scored 222,160 on the Championship Edition during the final match, which was enough to put him atop a field of competitors, including Billy Mitchell, who played the world's first perfect game of Pac-Man in 1999.

Pac-Man Championship Edition has been rated E for Everyone and will be available tomorrow morning for 800 Microsoft points ($10).

Complain about the price if you want its a very very fun follow up to the classic Pac-Man. Fast paced and addicting, What people should be complaining about is the wii virtual console price tags, $4 for NES games??? Also I wouldn't be surprised if Namco seen how much money fans pay for Nintendo games on virtual console and realized that there actually adding code and updating a classic. Not a bad price concidering there is work being put into the remake, when concidering what else is out there.

Hmm... I hate to admit it, but it's actually very good. It SHOULD have been $5, or at least included a remade version of the original or perhaps some competitive online multiplayer. But nonetheless, if you don't mind getting taken for a bit of a ride on the price and liked the demo at all, it's a good product.

This game is awesome. Well worth the $10.00 for it. I didn't like the old pac man at all. I was always into the Fast version of Ms. Pac-man. This game puts it to shame. It picks up speed durring the game. Anyone who played Pac-man jr on Atari 2600 may like this game a lot.

Played the demo, and absolutely loved it. Totally worth 800 points for the full game :)

Cool, and 800 points isn't horrible, but it's not good either. It just seems a little too much for a retro arcade game..

So, there I am reading the story thinking "well, a new Pac-Man game is ok and all, but for 800 points...?", and I can't help but see that I am not in the minority here. I love retro arcade games. XBLA has plenty of them. But I am not sure that giving them a new coat of paint and a few new modes is enough to make me want to pay $5 more for it than I would many of the other old arcade games that have been released with graphic updates.

You'd gotta be real hard-up to pay 10 bucks for pac-man. Especially since its on almost every game system made!!!

Ok i have now played Pac-Man Championship Edition and i can say it is cool and makes pac man new again, and the new mazes are nice. the speed makes it more exciting. but it is not $10 cool. The new old graphics and sound put up on a Widescreen HDTV are nice, and looks new high tech retro sleek like an 80s arcade gone high tech. There is also a trippy color changing maps and blur effect and Techo music (yes techno music) and I guess I like it since it makes it to look like a trippy rave and I like raves. I might just buy it anyway so i can show it to some old pac man lovers who don't play games Just so i can say. Lets go play pacman in high definition deftion 1080p widescreen and watch them get confused and amazed at the same time. This will sell for $10 to there target people who played games like pac man every once and while and do not play much else they will be amazed. It is to bad that almost none of those people have an xbox 360 to see it for $10 They all have wii's or maybe and older console oh well. I had fun with it but the price needs to drop to $6 or less. Since a standard game to compare it to is Geometry Wars and it is only $5 and has simlar amount of fun and content.

:) What's the world coming to when everyone starts complaining about 5 extra dollars for better content or games with extra maps? Surely you can afford to skip McDonald's for one night or hold off buying those 3 packs of cigarettes. I guess if you can't afford the few dollars, Aegis Wing's free go play it or better yet Xevious is just 5 bucks give it a shot... There are worse things to complain about out there like Rub-A-Dub on the PS3....

I never realised how cheap some gamers are. It's just ten dollars. Get over it.

800 points for Pac Man?...No thanks. Had this been 400 points I would have considered it.

N15PCA
N15PCA

I don't know if I would pay 800 points for this game thought. I think it should have been a 400 points game. Also I think that people that have all ready paid for the first Pac man game should get this game for 400 points also.

gameplay of this new pac-man on gametrailers.com. it's much faster and more vibrant than the other pac-man games. but it would still be nice if it was 400 points...

mcwhammer

Good point revelations. But... there are probably achievements :) You can't get those on a homebrew pac-man game. And you know how obsessed some people are with achievements.

I love Pac-Man, but geeze, is 800 points completely unnecessary for a game that you can basically have on PC for free? Especially from the custom made PM games online.

Harsh comments so far :O That surprises me, as I always thought that Pac-man was a game that spanned generations, and was loved by all. Apparently, some of you have had enough of it. I, however, herald the idea of finally adding special features and new pac maps. It is very long overdue, yes, but I'm happy to hear it all the same. I'll be downloading this one for sure.

BRING US ATARI WARLORDS ALREADY!!!!! I'd rather download an episode from Logo TV than to buy this game.

For $10 it better have tons of new updated nearly flawless content that works as good as the old game for the next 20 years. It looks new in the screen shots but it better play as good as $10 worth. The new updated HDTV widescreen graphics have me interested but not $5 extra interested. The new sharp widescreen look reminds me of how people thought advanced games would look in the "future " back in the 80s the same Yet fancy I do like that. Like tron, rez, and any other such movie "games of the future" are shown from the 80s, I have no less than 12 copies of pacman from atari consoles to modern gadgets I don't need another my fav version is the windows CE PDA version since all PDA screens are close enough to the Arcade machines vertical aspect ratio already. Having the xbox 360 pac man have borders with out an option to distort it to fill the screen was lame and it was no diffrent than other console versions i own so i skipped it but I owe so wanted those achievement points. Widescreen mazes might make me buy this version it's new. The pac man cartoon on xbox live was interesting though I am happy they put them up. I was born in 83 and they came on in 1982 first so I remember seeing the show and having no clue what i was watching other than it was the yellow guy on the cover of the household atari during it's reruns, until they put them up i forgot i had seen the show already.

Boo crazy yellow eating circle, how about games that some of us are actually interested in like: Chess, Battleships, and other kooky prefferably free games.

WTF!? I was hoping to have something cool to DL tomorrow and then i read this! What a let down. They already have 2 Pac-man based games on Live, we don't need another one.

This game was developed by the original creator of Pac Man, so it's not just a port or anything. I would maybe download this if my 360 wasn't in for repair...

cybergooch

OK, first off...what's there to get excited about with a 25 year old game with "updated" graphics? It's STILL a 25 year old port of a game that was ALREADY RELEASED. And it's 800 MS Points...WTF? I'm gonna shoot my Elite if it automatically downloads THIS pile of...well, PILE! In a world that has introduced 1,000's of quality PC and arcade games, we still end up seeing the same ones forced on us. Pacman, Ms Pacman, Dig Dug, Gauntlet...what about Shinobi, 720, Operation Wolf (gun add-on?), After-burner, Chop Lifter, the Simpsons, Rygar, NBA Jam (the original), and MORE!!! I could fill this page up with all kinds of good, better, best scenarios to bring to XBLA...AND NONE OF THEM HAVE BEEN RELEASED YET! Pacman was a great game for a long time, but don't even video games deserve a much needed retirement?

@ Jeff Yeah I know what you mean. I just took a look at the pics and it does look quite slick. I really wasn't expecting it to look like that. Hopefully they will have it for cheaper at a later date.

10 dollars? Thats to much. For 5 bucks I would have picked it up without much thought. I already bought the original pacman and have played varations of pacman for years. I would expect this to drop in price rather quickly.

I won the mrs pacman championships about a year ago and boy can i tell you what a rush it was one of the best experiences in the world. It was played in my garage and my mom baked cookies and we drank capri sun. ESPN 8 ( the ocho) covered the event it was pretty nervous playing on a tape delay telecast but it was crazy. Anyway i digress looks like a cool game. Over at Ign.com there reporting that Bungie is making a squad based first person shooter featuring pacman and mrspacman to compete with the upcoming Kane and Lynch im so stoked. I heard Steven Seagal is voicing pacman and Angelina Jolie has signed on to voice Mrs. Pacman this game is going to be a success.

I already bought the original Pac-Man for XBLA for 400 points so unless they make a deal for people who already got 1 or 2 of the other games(Ms Pac-Man also) No thanks MS and Namco this just doesn't seem worth the 10 dollars to me.
