Over 300 million Android devices sold

Google reveals new sales milestone for line of devices, reveals growth to 850,000 daily activations; 450,000 apps available in marketplace.

Games for the Android operating system now have a potential audience of more than 300 million users, Google has revealed.

Android and iOS are locked in a tight sales race.

Writing on the Google Mobile blog, senior vice president Andy Rubin revealed the new Android device worldwide sales tally and also noted that year-over-year growth is up over 250 percent, with 850,000 new Android activations each day.

Rubin also noted that there are now more than 450,000 apps available in the Android Market, up from the 150,000 available this time last year. Additionally, Rubin said more than 1 billion Android apps were downloaded last month.

By comparison, Apple had sold 316 million iOS devices as of the end of 2011, according to GameSpot sister site ZDNet.

@damo320 What would be the point, this is one of those cases where both sides believe they're 100% right and there's nothing either of us can say to convince the other one otherwise. I don't even know why i get involved in fanboy debates, nothing changes, nobody's opinion switches, i'm getting too old for this. Moving on now.

@Daian - are you deliberately trying to embarrass yourself? Rewind read my closing comments - then read your "attempted insult" and then repost it in the correct context. First rule of insulting someone - get the context right. You are a wonderful example of everything wrong with modern education.

@PixelAddict Indeed. Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG, HTC, All of them, they were nothing before the GIANT alpha leader of the Mobile realm that was NOKIA. Back then, owning anything other than a NOKIA was pretty much saying you have no good taste in phones. They were also dirt cheap, so they were always accecible to a broad audience, unlike the smartphones. Problem is, NOKIA is an old company relying on old ideals. It still believes a phone just has to be a good phone, everything else is a bonus. And while i'd like to believe that, it ain't so anymore. people want apps, games, cool slick designs, make them smaller, more stylish, compatible with multiple devices. NOKIA just never advances. Even it's own line of Smartphones suck, and they started the trend. I really feel sad for NOKIA. If only they learned to move on from their old ideas and utilize what future technology allows them, they'd still be reigning prime supreme. Biggest problem with smartphones is their Batteries die out fast, and they are incredibly gentle. One good fall and WHOOPS, there goes your phone. NOKIA could easily destroy that myth with their superior hardware design. I hope they catch up soon. OVI store sucks.

Linux! Of course it's important to note many of these devices are sold with contracts in fact I'd say most are. However many are not, Nooks, Kindles, among other tablets and phones sold off contracts. Android however is the reason why touchscreens became a necessity on phones. Also if people aren't aware yet of what's coming up for Android, Ubuntu for Android is coming out soon, which looks really useful, with the ability to hook your phone up to your TV and stream HD movies onto your HD TV it should be very interesting to say the least.

@Daemoroth Thank you, finally someone with some sense, the bigger issue is how the hell do you fit such monsters in your pocket? I'm a guy, i don't have a freakin purse for such large objects, they already feel too bulky and uncomfortable in a pocket, i don't really wanna carry a backpack with me just so i can carry my phone in it. @Mawy_Golomb The iPhone has been losing the battle with Android phones since Q2 2010. Currently the market share is 50.9% Android, 23.9% iPhone. Don't need to take my word for it, google it. @damo320 Wow, your mom has lots of fans. Sorry, you had that one coming due to your ignorant, fanboy, brain washed, disrespectful arguments.

@Vodoo. Not sure what the point of your reference to Apples figures being on all devices was? The android figures are just on "devices" sold too. Did you "have" a point?

lol of course Android devices are everywhere. They are the portable equivalent of what Windows is on Desktop PCs... an OS slut. Found in many devices wherever a deal was struck with it's pimp (Google). You could take the hundreds of Android OS devices and find massively varying levels of performance between them due to the different hardware running the OS. Meanwhile you can take iPhones running same version of iOS and expect same consistent performance between these devices. From day 1 Apple have been about their own hardware running their own OS. May make them unpopular with a portion of hardcore types or cheapskates but the fact is they are a consistent user friendly set of devices. You can never achieve anything like tru consistency allowing a OS to be sold to and run on a multitude of hardware configurations. All this story tells me is 300 million people like sluts.

My ONLY issue with Android is their current trend of "bigger is better". Seriously, their phones are approaching Tablet sizes! :( Call me old-fashioned, but I don't want to have to use two hands to use my phone. If they hunkered down and created a great phone (Looking at you Samsung) with the latest hardware and a 4" screen, I am in the queue for a launch day purchase.

Love Android. I'd never cross over to the dark side to that other company.

That good even if the only "true" android gaming devices are the upcoming Razer computer tablet with controller analog sticks/buttons, TheSony Ericcson xperia play. A regular smartphone just isn't suited to games beyond angry birds and cut the rope, and the odd tetris clone/knockoff.300 million phones sold which seems impressive. But not many people would consider themselves gamers, if they just have an Android smartphone? At least android is kicking the apple away.

Android has 850,000 activations PER DAY!!! Suck on that Crapple. And btw... those 316 million ios devices sold include the iphone, ipad, and ipod touch. Two of those are not phones but Crapple won't release individual sales numbers.

Why are people so addicted to their phones? I mean alto of people probably don't remember a time without constantly clicking away at one. It gets to be too much for me but I guess that means I'm old or lame or something.

The first line of the article isn't based on the released facts. Android devices include barely-smart phones that can't even run Angry Birds. How many of those are no contract phones sitting in a landfill? Android is successful. It doesn't need misleading statistics to boost it.

@supertom221 Hard to believe that at one point, Nokia was the leader in the mobile industry and had the only smart phone out! Anyone else remember the Nokia 9000 Communicator? I worked on a project with the company back in the late '90's, and they knew they were market leaders, but had no idea why. It was sad to watch. I just knew they were going to flame out terribly if they kept the way they were going.

@IrithAyllistira Indeed, I had a (very) old NOKIA 6300 up about two months ago. Damned f***er held out for almost 5 years, after taking so much hits and damage, it fell from the 4th floor-- survived. The floor beneath cracked. Still had to change the shattered panel, but the damn phone kept working. My dad's NOKIA got ran over by a 4x4 Jeep.... The day it became an iPod  They all survived. I switched to a short time to a NOKIA C3, half touch/half keys, hated it like hell. Now i'm living happily ever after with My Galaxy S2, but sometimes I still miss my old NOKIA..... In good news however, it was recently said NOKIA will finally get rid off Symbian soon, but I fear it will be too late. The market is advancing rapidly. Today's finest line of phones and OS could quickly become yesterday's garbage.

@Evilbunz HAH, CNet.... Has everyone shoving money into it's pockets, never believe CNet. Much as I love Windows, Windows phone OS is kinda suck-ish. It's still a thousand leagues better than Symbian, but between that and the Droid, Windows OS is NOTHING compared to the open source management of Android and the slick design of the iOS. These are the best phone/tablet OS' on the market, and it's going to stay this way for quite some time. Still waiting on that soon-to-be announcement of Jelly Beans (Android 5.0) :D

And 100 million were thrown away due to weak hardware. And the second 100 million broke due to hardware. Android rocks! When you have the battery and hardware specs to use it. Sad my android broke but then again I suppose it's only 1.25 years until the contract expires. No idea what I'll get for my next phone but I don't trust androids enough to get stuck on a contract with less bars in more places. To each their own I suppose.

I agree with @supertom221,I think that Nokia has one of the best phone designs/hardware but the Symbian OS is an horrible system. I have a Nokia CS3 which is freezing all the time and it's barely six months old. I don't understand why Nokia doesn't adopt the Android system, I guess it would be a win-win.

I would like to point out that this number is for the number of Android DEVICES sold, not just phones. The iPhone figure was just for comparison. There are MANY people buying Android tablets over iPads. I believe this figure without a doubt. They even sell Android laptops, just saw on one on eBay daily deals.

@supertom221 nokia had an internal coup and microsoft basically runs it now... the new nokia lumina 900 has windows os and won cnet's best phone award at ces this year. phone looks good but idk about the os.

@PixelAddict I'll never understand that stupid obsession NOKIA seems to have with Bel/Symbian OS. It sucks, it's laggy, and it is heavily lacking on content (OVI store? Really? GET OUT). It's really annoying too because NOKIA always made good, sturdy phones. If there was a strong NOKIA smartphone on the market with the Droid, I would definately take that over HTC or Samsung, good as they are. As of right now, though, I doubt you can even call NOKIA's phones "smart", what with such a dumb, clunky, useless OS.

I have recently aquired a Galaxy S2 and it's awesome. My only complaint is that it is a MASSIVE battery drainer. Dies really fast, even when compared to the iPhone. But other than that, why is this here?? I thought this was a serious gaming site. Who cares which smartphone sells more? if anything, we would care if VITA or 3DS sale more, and even that is a stretch. Please, we don't care about these stupid hubs of social BS 'games', if you can call them that.

Whoa, there. Before you uncork that champagne, be honest: how many of those devices are the same people replacing a broken handset or upgrading? Yeah, you're making money. But if there a large subset of your business is from repeat customers, that's not necessarily growth.

Not exactly news is it considering how overrated smart phones are, whether it's Android or iOS. Have to say though, between the two I prefer Android seeing as it's a much more open platform.

What is the relevance of listing such an article here, especially when the iPhone will continue to dominate in offering the most games for a smartphone. Who knows if/when Android devices will suddenly catch up.
