Over 1 Million People Have Investigated Sonic's Murder

This April Fool's joke is one of the top-rated games on Steam.

Free-to-play visual novel The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog has surpassed one million players. The game released on Steam late last month as an April Fool's joke, but funnily enough, has garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews on the platform.

In fact, according to Sonic the Hedgehog Social Media Manager Katie Chrzanowski, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog became the #61 highest-rated Steam game ever--not bad for an April Fool's joke. The game isn't developed by the Sonic Team, but by the Sega Social Team, instead. It's actually the highest-rated Sonic game in the series on Steam when sorted by user reviews.

Now Playing: Sonic Frontiers - Showdown Trailer

As its name suggests, the game is a murder mystery, and it's up to the player to find out who killed Sonic.

"It's Amy Rose's birthday, and she's hosting a murder mystery party on the Mirage Express! When Sonic the Hedgehog becomes the game's victim, everyone is off to get to the bottom of things. However, something feels a bit off--is this really an innocent game, or is something more sinister afoot?" reads the game's description on Steam.

The last mainline game in the series was Sonic Frontiers, which launched in November 2022. It received mixed reviews upon release.
