OutRun Online Arcade revving up for release

Sumo Digital's downloadable take on Sega racing franchise arrives on Xbox 360 next week for 800 Microsoft points; PS3 edition arriving in Europe.

Yu Suzuki may be entering the twilight of his career, but many of his most famous creations will doubtlessly endure for years to come. The latest example of this comes in the form of OutRun Online Arcade, Sega's downloadable entry into Suzuki's original Ferrari-obsessed arcade racing franchise.

Screeeeeech!

Sega today announced that OutRun Online Arcade would launch on the Xbox Live Marketplace next Wednesday, April 15, with an asking price of 800 Microsoft points ($10). While the game is an Xbox 360-exclusive title in North America, it will also be arriving on the European PlayStation Network next Thursday.

Like the original, OutRun Online Arcade is a race through a variety of 15 US locales with branching routes. In keeping with the series' fixation on a specific brand of fast cars, OutRun Online Arcade also features a selection of 10 different Ferraris. As the game's name suggests, online multiplayer races will be included, with support for up to six players per match.

Sega's partnership with Sumo Digital has extended beyond the OutRun games. The publisher also enlisted the Sheffield-based studio to produce Virtua Tennis: World Tour on the PlayStation Portable and this year's multiplatform Sega Superstars Tennis.

wow, i am amazed how manny people want this game :-) i hope we will soon meet up on xbox live, as i can't get the ps3 version. now all i hope is that this outrun is going to be more played online than the previous 2 xbox versions, where i hardly can find someone online. the second i return home from work, i will run to my xbox 360 and download the full version without hesitation !

I guess MS has the legal rights of editing Outrun in North America, sort of like Nintendo is (not) editing Fatal Frame in NA and Europe...Not sure though. For those who still want it on PS3 one way or another, I suggest to create a European PSN account...Funny thing is it's usually us Europeans who have to make US accounts to get stuff earlier ^^...

Concur. In addition to After Burner I would love to see other Sega titles as well that were originally produced by the famous Yu Suzuki. Like Space Harrier, After Burner II, or Super Hang On.

Good view TheArcade. And just thinking out loud, anyone want to see After Burner Climax or the original After Burner for XBLA? Would be sweet with flight stick (AceEdge or the Mad Catz) compatability!

I really don't think Microsoft is to blame for this. Blame Sony, they may not have the servers available to run it in America, either that or it could be do to legal issues. Ultimately it's up to Sega to decide which region THEIR GAME will go to not Microsoft. This is not another one of Microsoft's "timed exclusives" it would be a matter of when Sega finally gets the resources to port the game. If MS did shell out $$$ to make it "360-only" then it would be totally exclusive in just the U.S. and perhaps Europe thusly not available at all on PS3. If Anything European 360 players should feel jipped as they aren't getting a port. Just import it that's all. Use whatever means necessary to buy and play the European version. Unlike 360, PS3 is region free so this sort of thing should be easy. I don't know about you but I'm not waiting months for Sega to port an American version to PS3 I'm getting mines on 360 when it comes out this week! Screw waiting!

You are correct sir (sort of) Outrun was released on Playstation 2 and Xbox, both legacy hardware of the respected companies. They had Outrun 2 and Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast (two quality games) I know you can play both Outrun games on 360 because they are backwards compatible, and I assume they are also playable on PS3. Though both versions are fantastic the Xbox version has online so you can play it over Live on both Xbox and 360. This Outrun game has online for both and I believe is newer. It will be the first online Outrun game to go online with PSN outside of Japan (there was a rumor that there was a Japanese version for PS2 which had online, not sure if it's true) so yeah, I highly recommend this title on whatever system you prefer. I don't care if you buy it on 360 or import it on PS3, pick this one up. It's a keeper. :)

All I can say is it's about d*** time! Listening to Risky Ride and Splash Wave right now...360 owners add Fox M McLeoud if you wanna race! Gonna get a 2000 point card this weekend so I can get the new Lips and Rock Band stuff too, and still have some set aside. Been waiting for this one since it was first announced for XBLA!

There was a faithful Arcade translation of Daytona USA. You can find it on the Dreamcast. As for this game I couldn't be more pleased with Sega I just wish they'd bring more of their Arcades over to the Marketplace. *coughs* Spider-Man: The Video Game and SegaSonic The Hedgehog (Arcade)

This game has already been released twice in the last 5 years, Sega. Why are there no faithful arcade translations of Daytona USA, Indy 500, or SCUD racer? Frustrating.

KV: This sucks, why isn't it coming to PSN in the U.S? Jesus: Yeah, we love OutRun and many others would love for the game to appear on PSN in the U.S. KV: Yeah Jesus, this just isn't fair.:(

These games were good years ago. I wonder if I still like that kind of gameplay.

I think Outrun was the first really good 3D racing game. Glad to see it's return.
