Original PlayStation games hit PS Vita

Limited library of titles available for North American users compared to Europe, Japan; workaround involves transferring games from PlayStation 3.

by

Original PlayStation classics purchased on PlayStation Network are now downloadable on the PS Vita, but some North American owners have been displeased by an extremely limited selection. Update 1.80 for the PS Vita also included modifications for the handheld system's user interface, browser, and other tweaks, according to the PlayStation Blog.

We'll always have Midgar.

The new PlayStation functionality officially supports only nine games, including Final Fantasy VII, Syphon Filter, and Tomb Raider. By comparison, the European PlayStation blog lists 129 titles available starting tomorrow, and its Japanese counterpart has 291 games ready for download in that region today.

Users have discovered that at least 80 PlayStation games appear to function on North American PS Vitas, but are accessible only if first downloaded on a PlayStation 3. An unofficial list of the games that can be transferred to the PS Vita has been compiled by Reddit users.

GameSpot requested comment from Sony Computer Entertainment America about the discrepancy between regions and when North American users can expect more titles to become available, but received no response as of this writing. The PlayStation Vita has sold 2.2 million units as of June since its February launch.

Why US Store has less content than EU? EU has over 100 PS2 classics, US has less than 30, and you don't want to know how many PS1 games they have on their Store, and now this....I'm starting to think the guys managing US Store are kinda lazy.

Finally a decent reason to get a Vita, but we still need NEW games Sony not only classics

I don't need to download FF VII to play it, I have the original and I wouldn't like to play it on VITA

Okay, they are great titles.

But do they expect majority of us to buy those games? Again?

I bought Wild Arms. Not because I'm really going to play Wild Arms, with everything else I have going on, but because I feel like it's important to vote for Sony paying attention to the Vita.

I love my PS3 and I would really like a Vita, but I have to say... Playstation fans are fans in SPITE of Sony's awful marketing and external communication. Even the people running the PS Blog seem bewildered a lot of times about what's going on at their own company.

Sony really needs to spin off its Playstation division and give it carte blanche to not behave like Sony. That would make a huge difference in how PSN is run and how Playstation hardware can be used. It would also allow the Playstation division to quit having to prop up Sony services no one wants or having to  hawk Sony technology no one wants to buy.

Very cool, indeed. Not in the market to buy a Vita just yet, but this certainly makes it more appealing down the line. I really wish Nintendo would have done something like this with the Wii's Virtual Console and the 3DS.

Would have loved to been able to link accounts and play the NES, SNES and N64 games I purchased already on my 3DS. But instead they have a totally separate shop and charge, yet again, $5 bucks for Super Mario Bros.

Go figure. I'm into emulation, too, but I still purchased FFVII, VIII and IX on the PSN to show respect to the classics... and in memory of Squaresoft.

Syphon Filter was one of the worst PS games I have ever played.

So bad that I actually got a full refund on it.

Anyway, I've moved to emulation as it's impossible for me to look at such tiny resolutions from old consoles on my 1920x1200 monitor (component in, baby). While it's not the genuine experience (emulation is never perfect), it's good enough for me to not bother using my consoles again unless I really want some nostalgia flowing through me.

My opinion from the blog. Don't yell at me for being ignorant to some of the games here

Arc the Lad - Never heard of it

Cool Boarders 2 - Same ^

FINAL FANTASY VII - Obvious choice is obvious

Hot Shots Golf 2 - Best golfer from PS1 era for me, but shame it didn't have that rep now

Jet Moto - Interesting mechanics, but a little too hard for me at the time i had it

Syphon Filter - Taser dance revolution

Tomb Raider - I'm not really into Tomb Raider.

Twisted Metal 2 - Better this than the next few

Wild Arms - Never played it

My PS1 is actively connected I was just playing Street Fighter EX on it, I'll never understand why people don't just keep some of their old systems if it has games on it they really like. I feel playing on the original hardware beats software emulation anyday, it's better than respending on things you already bought.

Then again, using the Vita you can play this stuff on the go, I suppose there's some value to it after all.

I recently noticed a few of the oddball PSP games I bought digitally can be transferred onto the Vita now, (Valhalla Knights 2: Battle Stance, Capcom Arcade Reloaded, etc.) when I didn't have the option to download them onto it when I first got it.

Sad for Vita owner in NA. Anyways I'm not worry since I got all my PSOne games on my PSP.

Same thing as the PSP games a while back...the downloads were pretty scant, but copying from the PS3 had a hell of a lot more playable titles. Sucks for people who don't own a PS3 (but seriously...how many people who own a Vita don't own a PS3?). Still, I'm pretty pleased...I got the RE series, Silent Hill, Tomb Raider series, Parasite Eve, hell even Reloaded works on it. All I'm saying is give it time, and it'll be more convenient for those who'd rather just download it from the Vita.

Sexy. But it should have been a feature from the beginning.

Only 9 PSone games offically supported in North America. Japan and Europe faired much better. Still it is only Playstation 1 games. Which is not the main reason that I bought PSvita. But it is a nice touch. Still it is better late than never. Maybe this might help sales in Asia and the Pal regions. Sony could be doing the correct thing by focusing on Japan and Europe. They may be stronger markets or they can more for PS1 B/.C on the PSvita.

Reported yesterday so GS is a bit late.

The workaround for PS3 users is nice until licensing gets figured out by SCEA, which is more lax in EU.

Why is the US getting screwed over so badly on Vita download titles?  What is the reasoning behind this?

This is nice for Vita users who want to play original PlayStation games, but I had to wonder why North American users have a slim selection compared to their European and Japanese counterparts.

now lets make it to where if you buy a PS3 game you can play it on your Vita when you need to leave your house or if you just want to take it along and I will buy a Vita I swear I will, but not until you allow me to take my PS3 games where ever I go.....

true but last time i checked i cant get my PC or laptop in my pocket and its far easier to pull my vita out on a bus or train than a laptop

@SecularSage Yet there are just as many people who have been put off buying a Sony product ever again because of these same problems. Couple that with their arrogance and they've lost a huge potential user base.

Thirdrail1

@SecularSage You are absolutely correct. As long as the first hurdle for every Sony system is just surviving being a Sony product, it's going to be the same sad story over and over again. You'd think someone would have learned something during the years it took the ps3 to struggle free of Sony's incompetence.
