Original Killzone indefinitely delayed for PS3

Guerrilla Games says digital release of 2004 PlayStation 2 shooter on PlayStation Network pushed into future with no new release date.

The original Killzone shooter was supposed to land on the PlayStation Network on January 24, but it never made it. Today, developer Guerrilla Games has commented on the matter, saying the game has been pushed indefinitely into the future.

Gamers are going to have to wait for the original Killzone.

A tweet today from the official Killzone Twitter account reads, "I have no further info about KZ1 for PS3, save for the fact that it's delayed indefinitely. If I learn anything else, I'll tweet it here."

If/when Killzone does arrive on the PSN, it will be part of a larger Sony effort to release PlayStation 2 titles for the PlayStation 3 called the "Only on PSN" program.

Speculation about Killzone's arrival for the PS3 was first sparked when the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) published a rating for the game, indicating it was headed to that system.

@Link3301 You got your fanboyism wrong; he was trashing the system, not internet. (Also, technically speaking, the internet is also free on the 360.)

@buying1999 PS3 internet is free.

HD would make it look worse. It'll amplify all the old school distortional tech effects.

Probably they read all those comments from people saying 'I won't buy it unless it has trophies!!!!111'...also I may be unpopular here by saying this....but the original KZ graphics are ugly as sh*t...(I should know, I played at less than 6 months ago)...HD would only take it so far I'm afraid.

This is why I still have my PS2 right on the shelf above my PS3. Its old, it makes noise...but there's games on it I wouldnt stop playing for the world. And Killzone is one of them.

I hope this is so they can release it as a HD remaster rather than a simple port, since that's the only way I'll buy it anyway. I actually think Killzone 1 is the best, especially the story. Ok, Rico was annoying, but Hakkah was a great character and his role as a double-agent who Rico couldn't initially trust for (basically) racial reasons was a real revelation in terms of videogame storytelling. Also it has Templar, who you can't help admire as just an ordinary soldier trying to do the right thing.

That sucks. The original Killzone is the one game that truly would of benefited a HD remaster, if only to remove the pop-up and frame-rate issues it first had in 2004.

Please HD remake be the reason for the delay!

Oh well. I'd rather have Ace Combat 4, 5 and Zero in HD anyways.

could not care less, Killzone 1 was awful. The 2 sequels on the other hand are fantastic. I really want a HD remake of Maximo for the ps2... anyone else remember that game? Childhood classic for me :)

I'm glad i still have my launch PS3. The PS2 games I play off disc, my not be in full HD or included with trophies, but there is still an obvious upscale of visual quality and thats good enough for me.

I have a great idea. How about Sony uses the emulation technology that they own and make all of my PS2 games, that I have already bought, work on the PS3. Yes I know that I could have bought a PS3 for $600 that would have done it, but come on. If they did that, they might just sell more PS3s. I will not be re-buying any. Reverse compatibility is important and anyone that thinks different likes blowing money. Or having three Playstations and two Xbox's all connected to the same tv.

Funny, the 1st/2nd edition PS3 could play all these PS2 games. If they left this in, no need for the "Only on PSN" program.

Why don't they put PS2 games that sold great or would be popular today? The first time they try to step in the right direction, they decide not to go along with it. (Check the drop to see what they put on instead...)

@BravoOneActual I actually bought Sky Odyssey for 2 bucks in the bargain bin at GameStop not long ago. It's a fun little flying game. I believe it came out around the PS2's launch (2000).

I've always wanted HD remakes of : Stranger's Wrath Killzone Sky Odyssey One and a half down. One and a half to go. I'll be there on day one for KZ, whenever they're ready.

@killlo It does not detract from the fact that Killzone 1 is a crappy game....regardless of the sequels

it's probably better that they not re-release the first Killzone on PSN, on the other hand if they did a total rework of the game using new tech it's possible the game end up being worth something.

If Sony is still having trouble getting ahead of Halo, then they are some deep s***. Halo is nowhere near as popular as it was years ago. Call of duty is the real FPS giant now.

Does anyone really care about this? There are so many other amazing PS2 games that need to be put on PSN, like Okami, Persona or FFXII. DO IT! DO IT NAO!!!

@ChiefFreeman @mjc0961 Has it ever crossed your minds that maybe some gamers enjoyed the first one...and maybe they want the full franchise on PS3? By saying this I hope they release a HD version with Killzone Liberation as well... Next Killzone may be the "HALO killer" people have talked about since the release of the first one... And the HD port might give them some clues about what did the first Killzone a good co-op game...

DrRockso87

Keeping my fingers crossed the delay is because Sony changed the original plan and decided to remaster the original Killzone in HD instead.

The first one was so boring, the only good thing about it was multiplayer split screen against bots. (Who all had the knack of camping the grenade launcher spawn point.)

Frosty192

@Howman888 Haha no you are not the only one. For me, that was the shooter I would play day in and day out. When I broke up with my gf at the time, my friends honestly thought I only did that because I needed more game time haha.

maximumbarmage
maximumbarmage

I'm betting the delay is because Sony want it re-released HD Classics style instead of straight ported. It's a fun game and all, but the performance looks utterly shocking up against the rest of the series. It just wouldn't hold up released 'as is'.

Howman888
Howman888

Am I the only fan of the original? Not to mention, KZ1 had split-screen multiplayer, which was insanely fun when playing with someone else

protokyoto
protokyoto

Guess I'm in the minority here. I enjoyed the original more than the sequels as the the choosing your character game mechanic was awesome during that time. The sequels stripped that mechanic and made the franchise into just another shooter (albeit an extremely pretty one that was fun to play).

ChiefFreeman
ChiefFreeman

No loss. Why would anyone want the original (not so good) game over its vastly improved sequels? Please Guerilla, focus on the next gen Killzone 4, and whatever other game you're making for the Playstation 4. No loss here, folks.

Why not release a version with remastered graphics, like MS did with Halo CE Anniversary? I love Killzone 2 and 3, but haven't played the first one since I've never owned a PS2
