Open-world zombie survival game State of Decay hits XBLA this week

PC version of State of Decay is also in the works, but not yet dated.

by

Indie studio Undead Labs' first game, State of Decay, will be released on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday, June 5, for 1600 Microsoft Points.

The third-person open-world game focuses on surviving in a zombie-infested world, and promises a dynamically generated experience that changes in real time.

State of Decay was originally unveiled as Class3 in 2011, with the game designed as a precursor to a zombie MMO that was announced by Undead Labs back in 2009.

Undead Labs is led by Jeff Strain, one of the original founders of Guild Wars developer ArenaNet and former lead programmer for World of Warcraft.

A PC version of State of Decay is also in the works, but no release date has been specified.

This game seems like it could fairly easily be convrted into a sandbox MMO.  It could use some tweaks and more varied voice lines, but it seems like Undead Labs could bring in a regular income through making this an MMO and solidify their status as a developer without a huge amount of additional work.  This already seems to be about 50% there.

It sounds like that may already be their plan, so I am hoping it happens soon.

Great game, very few XBLA games keep me playing for any long periods of time.

I've not gotten deep into any story yet, just resource gathering & building the base, but there's a few niggles for me, lack of co-op being #1 #2 & #3, but also I've not really felt in any real danger yet.. though my friends have died a few times, maybe I'm just awesome.

This is one game, like dragons dogma, that would have been so much popular with co-op. However, the game system is what i've always wanted in a open world game. Too bad Skyrim wasn't made the same way. Anyhow, thats not to take away what Undead Labs has achieved. This game rocks, i love it, and i'll be playing it forever cause its so easy to forgive its shortcomings cause of how the game makes you feel and how you are always in a constant state of survival.

REALLY impressive for a xbla game.

I am interested in any kind of MMO on XBox.  I will need to see a review first though, to make sure this isn't broken.

Played the demo, seems to have some cool concepts, building your various safe houses up is cool, voice acting is serviceable but the characters are way too nonchalant about zombies killing people, they don't really seem too concerned about it.

From a technical standpoint it looks good, but its a little rough around the edges. Some of the issues could be patched I'm sure. Combat is just pumping the X button for melee attacks while keeping an eye on your stamina, guns are also available and mapped to the triggers. Movement control is sluggish (along with the camera), strange button layout requires odd combinations to perform simple tasks. Vehicle control takes a little getting used to but you can make it work. Camera can get stuck outside leaving you blind while you're trying to fight in small spaces like tents and cabins where you are frequently ambushed.

On the plus side there are multiple characters you can switch between and a leveling system where your skills progress as you use them, from things like fighting and stamina to leadership abilities and team responsiveness. Heavy focus on scavenging and teamwork with your allies, and a you will need to be smart about managing your supplies and ammo.

I think this is a game where you get out what you put into it. If you're really into zombie survival, you'll make it work and probably have a good time, if you're not, play the demo (which lasts a full hour) and see what you think.

Seems like a great year for zombie survival games. I mean really, we're already going to be getting the DayZ alpha, State of Decay, Suvarium, the last of us, and the next walking dead season very soon. Can't wait.

Also, I think i'll be waiting for PC, this review says there are bad textures and framerate issues on consoles: http://www.oxmonline.com/state-decay-review?page=0,1

So I was wondering if anyone knows if this game is voiced or just text. Only because of the fiasco with not being able to read the text on Dead Rising without an HDTV. I saw a few videos but it wasn't made clear to me and wondered if anyone else knew?

Zombie survival game. Apparently I can crouch in the bushes and walk away from the game indefinitely, without dying. Game complete. Nothing to do here.

Base defense adventure game.

@OHGFawx

I agree with pretty much everything you said, except maybe how the characters were too nonchalant about the outbreak. Marcus and Ed were suitably freaked out (especially Ed) when they first experienced things, maybe not Maya because she's a soldier...and a bad ass. Everyone else had time to flip out and then calm down some before the starting three meet up with them. They kind of respond to the zombies like most characters do in zombie fiction; panic a bit, accept how ****ed things are, then deal with it. I'm not ranting, btw, I just thought that was an interesting observation...

@maximo No, but if this sells well they will make the next game with multiplayer

@Colekern not going to happen period, MGS is funding it.

@obsequies Im excited about it too, but this looks pretty sweet as well. They're so different I dont really think they can be compared though.

@moistsandwich Why? If you have a 360 than play it on that. I don't understand PC gamers. You would rather wait for a version that you have no idea when it is coming out than getting it tomorrow. As long as you get to play it what does it matter what you play it on. Get it on the 360.

@KC_Hokie

Probably not, sadly. They have yet to flesh out the base concept of it, let alone write a single bit of code. E3 will probably be when they drop a PC launch date for State of Decay, though.

OHGFawx

@UrbanMessiah Maya and Lily were the main two I suppose. Lily's dad was out checking for supplies and hadn't radioed in for awhile, but she didn't seem too worried. Of course we knew the truth though. A small thing, just something I noticed.

@y3ivan Dude, read the article.

@Colekern @Julia_Faye Poorly in my opinion. These guys are all basically like, "Yeah its zombies, what're gonna do right?" "My two friends just got killed right in front of me, so yeah that sucks."

@feared4power @obsequies sure your not confusing that with warz? isn't dayz the mod that state of decay is replicating? They are completely different games from different devs. Warz is crap and dayz is the best of the genre..right?

Colekern
Colekern

@TheGamr101 @moistsandwich For me, a lot of it is the controls, and the fact that I already have all of my games on steam. Oh, that and framerate issues.

y3ivan
y3ivan

@Colekern @y3ivan i did say "period". Its usually about 1 year, provided if undead labs does not push their assets to the new project "class4"
