Only 27 percent of Ouya owners have bought games

Majority of Ouya customers are playing free and demo content; CEO already happy with the sales conversion rate on the platform.

Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman has confirmed that only around a quarter of customers who have purchased the device have also bought software on the company’s Android-based home console.

The news comes from an interview with The Verge, where Uhrman said that hardware sales and conversion rates shifting players from free demos to full version software--13 of Ouya’s top 20 grossing games have achieved an 8 percent upsell average--will continue to rise as more content is produced and the marketplace matures.

"I think there are a lot of social and mobile app developers that would kill for an 8 percent attach rate on a platform that's 30 days old," she said. "These numbers will grow as more gamers pick up consoles, and as we attract more developers, and I believe that by the end of the year, we'll see a few developers telling us they've made more than a million dollars on Ouya."

Uhrman also confirmed that interest from content creators is growing, with more than 21,000 developers now signed up to make games for the system, up from 8,000 in March this year, when Kickstarter backer units became available.

Earlier this week, TowerFall creator Matt Thorson revealed that the game has performed well, selling 2,000 units.

To help bolster its software library, Ouya has announced a $1 million "Free the Games Fund" that will match Kickstarter crowdfunding for original projects that will remain exclusive on the platform for at least six months.

Ouya is looking good, and so far has great reviews from people who actually know what it is (it's not supposed to be like the xbox360 or ps3). I'm stoked for all the emulators, and their game list is rising consistently! It will be great to play, and have my kids play games like Legacy of Goku 2, the original and SNES Mario Bros, Secret of Mana, and PS1 and N64 titles!

Well,Wii had something "original",so Nintendo was selling it great. But the real gamers know that Wii is a "child" console.Anyway,I like some games on it,it's fun for playing with others, and best of all it has a gamecube support (the old ones).I guess I will buy OUYA also because I'm a collector.

Do you have any idea how much shovelware is on the Wii? Trust me, it's not meant to be fun. The truth is that many on both platforms are made to be quick cash-ins.

Not quite. And besides, the Xbox One isn't even out yet.

That's what happens when you make a console with shovelware at launch, games that every has already played or that nobody cares for, and runs emulators at Day 1, period.

update: ouya does not play games at all, it only plays android crap

so why did they buy an ouya if they aint buying games? too poor to afford a smartphone/pc? there must be something ouya offers that my phone doesn't right?

Common misconception ^ PC emulation is actually hard to do. As weird as it may sound, a PC requires a 3GHz processor in order to emulate perfectly. Why you don't notice this is due to some of the more popular games having codes in the more popular emulator programming to specifically induce frame skips and sound skipping at other times so everything syncs up, but most emulators aside from something like bsnes are quite horrid at emulating anything else accurately. Interesting article on this: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2011/08/accuracy-takes-power-one-mans-3ghz-quest-to-build-a-perfect-snes-emulator/

I own an Xbox 360 and a PS3, and most of their menu screens look like department store ads.  20% OFF!!  BUY THIS!!  STREAM THIS MOVIE, EXCLUSIVELY ON ___!!!

On the OUYA, the main menu screen's options are:

PLAY

DISCOVER

MAKE

MANAGE

That's a pretty straightforward philosophy.  With no ads, and no begging.

Right now the OUYA's game library is slim pickings, and the system is definitely a little rough around the edges, but if you have nothing but bad things to say about it, and you truly want it to fail, maybe you should put the controller down and pack up your systems in a box and put them in the attic.  Take some time and think about why you play video games.

For that reason and it's price tag I will get one!

Funny IGN wrote a similar article 73% of Ouya owners yet to buy a game.

Still have to use a mouse from time to time. And most people dont want a giant 800 to 1200 watt emulator box to occasionally play zelda link to the past. I mean the ouya cost less than your graphics card.

Don't listen to these two little shits here there just a couple of kids who's mommy buys them everything. I do believe the OUYA just needs time to get its advertised games out to the market. A good number of games advertised for the system are slated for a 2014 release or at least holiday of this year. I will admit to have rooted mine and installed CM10 on it but we are working to get OUYA store access so we can continue to support the system.

I'm getting one strictly for emulators to be very honest .

im getting OUYA, PS4 and WiiU for this generation. period.

The Ouya design team said that they did want the console to be "open" and they did encourage free downloading and emulation. That was pretty much their mantra during the system's Kickstarter.

Whether those features will inspire confidence from developers aiming to make a monetary profit is another story entirely.

Android games are created just for fun, like most of the Wii games. The only serious game for OUYA is Final Fantasy 3 remake. This is an interesting cheap product, but it can't be a serious game console,so I think developers can't expect to be millionaires.

The other 73% are using it as a doorstop.

@veryDERPY

Emulators with dedicated controller support in one box with no concern for battery life.  That's the main reason. As soon as Ouya get Netflix and Hulu support that will be another reason.

@eze_sl89 so you buying ps2's gen a current gen and a next gen console

@eze_sl89 Same here already got the Wii U and PS4 still waiting on the Ouya cards before buying it, since i can't use my bank card to purchase things online I have to wait for the cards.

@Clownbabby You do realize this is considered a success already right? 2000 copies of a game sold and the company already turned a profit this thing may just be the future of gaming when companies figure out the value of this console.

@Clownbabby Oh course he is trolling,

hes mad because he is trying to get his mom to buy him the new xbox 1 but she bought him the Ouya instead

McDog3

@Clownbabby I realize you're probably trolling, but it does play games and it can play movies (there is a nice version of xbmc that works well).  You shouldn't be making broad over-reaching statements that are false.

@Nemesis_47 Or enjoying the FREE limited access to all 250+ games..  since that's a big point of the system.
