On Eve Of PS4's First Birthday, Sony Releases New Stats

13.5 million systems shipped, 1 billion hours played, 530 million presses of the Share button.

The PlayStation 4 launched on November 15, 2013 meaning the console will celebrate its first birthday tomorrow. Sony marked the occasion today with a note from SCEA president CEO Shawn Layden, and a new infographic (above) that shows some of the impressive PS4 statistics recorded in year one.

Some key takeaways:

  • PS4 has shipped 13.5 million systems worldwide (compared to 10 million for Xbox One)
  • PS4 users have pressed the share button 530 million times
  • PS4 users have tallied 1 billion hours playing online
  • In the US, PS4 hardware sales generated more revenue than any other new platform
  • PlayStation Network has 56 million "active" users
  • PlayStation Plus has 7.9 million members; subscribers are up 270 percent since PS4's launch
  • September 2014 was the biggest month ever for PSN in terms of revenue

Layden, who took over the job from Jack Tretton following his departure from the company in March 2014, thanked fans for their support in a post featured on the PlayStation Blog.

"Thanks again for your incredible support over the years and please know that you, the PlayStation Nation, are in our hearts and minds every day reminding us to continue delivering the best gaming experiences possible and always ensure that PlayStation is truly the best place to play," he said.

2014 also marks the 20th anniversary of the PlayStation brand, as the original PlayStation console was released in Japan on December 3, 1994. Layden said Sony will publish a series of blog posts in the lead-up that "take a look back" at the first two decades of PlayStation.

"Those of you who have been with us from the beginning, along with those who are new to PlayStation family, are in for a special treat so please stay tuned," he said.

Another big event for PlayStation this year is next month's two-day PlayStation Experience community event, which will be held December 6-7 in Las Vegas. The show is expected to bring news about upcoming PlayStation games, maybe even Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. GameSpot will be on the ground at the show, bringing you news and analysis.

Hack author misrepresents the details...

Sony 13.5m sold through to consumers as they confirmed previously, they did not retract this statement just this article did so in error..

Also MS is ALMOST (as in not yet) 10m shipped to stores... that is a big difference

@papa_mudd Yep, the people below are morons. If they would have just used Google...

10 million shipped versus 13 million shipped.

X million sold versus 10 million sold.

Given the Xbox has been leading in sales recently, I'd say the bridge has been greatly reduced between the two. Xbox is probably sitting at 7 or 8 million.

@DarkReign2022 Leading in sales for 2 weeks isn't exactly leading in sales.  I highly doubt they've hit 8 million.  It's possible they've it 7 million.  The boost from holiday shipments helped them reach 10 million.  Their numbers are a bit misleading.  Sony obviously hasn't sent out holiday shipments yet or their number would've hit around 17 million instead of 13.5 million (which they've been at for a while now).

@DarkReign2022 Xbox is selling like a beast in Best Buy, but best buy predominantly favors the Xbox brand anyways. Also there is a black friday deal for PS4 @ 399 with TLOU:R and GTAV so that will probably be a big seller as well! Overall looking great for holiday sales I'd expect 5m sold through for both consoles combined easily by the end of the holidays

@DarkReign2022 people are missing something very important when microsoft says leading in sales. These are internal numbers and not NPD numbers. microsoft doesn't know how much sony is actually selling. microsoft says they have tripled in sales so in there mind they are winning the month when sony could be quadrupling in sales and not saying anything just letting microsoft kick themselves in the mouth like that pacther guy did last month. Granted i'm not saying thats what sony is doing but its a possibility.

And ps4 have 13.5million shipped to consumers and xbox have less then 10 million shipped to retailers. microsoft can't reduce that gap until they outsell sony globally not just in the US. so for instance microsoft could potentially outsell sony in the US this month by a couple 100 thousand but sony will still take it globally which means the gap will not be reduced because ps4 will still outsell xbox world wide not just the US which is what IGN. Gamespot will report on.

The article is wrong. Xbox: 10m shipped. PS4: 13.5m sold.

Microsoft is counting all the systems that are on the shelves of retailers. Sony is only counting the systems in homes. Xbox is probably selling closer to half of PS4.

That's great numbers, Sony. I've have had a great time with my PS4 since I bought it 3 months ago, but some more quality exclusives would be nice. The 2015 line-up looks good but I'm worried about The Order 1886.

Ppl were getting on Xbox articles talking about the whole 10mil Xbox's SHIPPED. Are u satisfied now? It looks like ps has 13.5 SHIPPED not 13.5 in homes, you can cut the retardedness out now.

@con_wars Just so you're aware they've confirmed 10 million sold into homes and in order to get those there they had to ship at minimum 10 million into retailers. They have close to a 1 to 1 ratio.

Congratulations to Sony on such a fantastic first year... I think my stats would go 1 console purchased, 5 uses of 'Share', 1 hour online with a PS+ trial... Besides that, I've enjoyed having a PS4 for the last 3 months... I suspect I'll be on it more come 2015/2016

Congrats to Sony. I wonder what the "special treat" is.. If they want to give us more free games I'm totally cool with that :-)

So Sony shipped about 33% more units. Sunset Overdrive, Halo, White XBox One, Kinect gone, price drop, all this brought XBox One back into the game. Sony better step up or will they be complacent?

fire897
fire897

They said shipped. They had 10 million sold last time they gave stats. Meaning they had more than 10 millions shipped before and have less than 13 million sold now.

@dysonlu yeah, but what if MS shipped 3 million, which is about what these companies ship this time a yr, how much would they have sold? 7 million. yawn!

@kyelo @rasterror This is how gamers should communicate with each other even if we don't  have the same platform! Loved it!

I just hope Xbox gets ahead so Sony feels it's slipping and creates more Infamous and Last of Us level games. Either way both are doing great, especially Sony.

Thanks. I hold no punches and give a fair assessment and make a comment based on evidence and not emotion. If someone drops the ball I'll give my two cents. If someone does something great I'll congratulate them. If I'm wrong and someone proves me wrong I'll apologize and correct myself. I'm passionate about gaming and not just one company or brand. We all have different likes and dislikes. As long as we can respect each other's tastes then it's all good.

@dammityoufool A day after the Xbox live still broken articles. Why not wish for them both to have success rather than wishing for one to fail? Grow up.

@xmagicman11 MS hasn't given us a sales number since launch. So... there's that. Both consoles are doing fine, quit being a fanboy.

@corvusmd @pablo0977 Nope. They have never given sold through numbers. Only shipped to stores. Read more carefully next time.

Why should we check wikipedia when Sony itself says they shipped ?

@xmagicman11 No - I think you found proof of Sony fanboys misinterpreting. Sony clearly said shipped. But the comments sections were full of people claiming it was sold through

Yes but you use Wikipedia for the info and then cite the sources at the bottom. Amateurs

the ps4 has shipped 13.5 million and the xbox one has  only shipped 10 million (lol) ,  xbox one is like 1/5 of the sales of the PS4, Xbox One should surrender
