Change is afoot at Oculus, which is forming two new groups and shifting the responsibilities of chief executive officer Brendan Iribe.

One of the new groups will focus on PC virtual reality, while the other will do the same with mobile VR. Iribe will head up the PC group, which will entail "pushing the state of VR forward with Rift, research, and computer vision," he explained in a blog post. "As we've grown, I really missed the deep, day-to-day involvement in building a brand new product on the leading edge of technology."

"We've brought together an extraordinary set of people with a shared passion for building the best virtual reality," he said. "And the exciting part is it's still just the beginning. Facebook is committed to working on VR for the long term, which means building the next great computing platform that allows people to experience anything with anyone and connects the world in bold new ways.

"Changing the world on that scale has required us to also scale Oculus at warp speed. With our growth and product strategy, we've decided to establish new PC and mobile VR groups to be more focused, strengthen development and accelerate our roadmap."

Oculus' new mobile group will be headed up by a recent hire, Jon Thomason. Iribe said the two will work with Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer "to find a new leader for the Oculus team."

It's been a big year for Oculus and VR overall, with the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR all debuting. (Oculus also recently launched its new Touch controllers.) However, while there were plenty of milestones for VR, 2016 hasn't been a huge year for VR sales. Research group SuperData recently said it was dramatically cutting its sales expectations for PSVR this year, though it still expects it to outsell both the Rift and Vive.
