Ocean's N64 Destiny

No Mission: Impossible yet, but Ocean's got a fighting game ready for release in early 1998.

While N64 gamers wait for Mission: Impossible (see today's Mission story), Ocean's got two new games to make players happy during the beginning of 1998. Ocean stopped by today to show off two of its newest N64 games, Fighter's Destiny and Wetrix, and both look very promising.

Fighter's Destiny is a 3D polygonal fighting game with over a dozen characters, ranging from a clown, to a Middle Eastern wrestler, to hidden characters. In some of the game's other modes, you'll face very bizarre opponents like a cow (yes, that's right - COW) and a training dummy.

The setup is very similar to that of Virtua Fighter - you fight in a ring (of variable size) and the goal is to knock the other guy out as many times as possible. The graphics are very fast, and the winning shots are similar in style to VF, but different enough to make it original.

Gameplay is different from most fighting games though. The action is points-based, meaning that each attack or knockdown gets you a certain amount of points. For instance, a "ring out" is only worth one point, so it's not advantageous to just knock your opponent out of the ring and be done with it. Using special attacks, moves, or combos will get you more points. So, a fight may go more than just two or three rounds depending on your fighting style.

You can use either the analog or digital pad to control the action and configure almost every aspect of the game. There are plenty of modes to play, too. Vs. Com is the single-player mode, Vs. Battle is the two-player game, Record Attack is an endurance mode (with three categories - survival, fastest, and rodeo), Master Challenge (where you learn skills), and Training Mode. With the game you can also customize a fighter with special moves and then save that data onto a memory card to duke it out with a friend against his customized fighter.

Developed by Genki/Imagineer, Fighter's Destiny looks to be the best fighting game for the N64 so far, and it will be interesting to see how the finished product turns out (it's currently 90-95 percent complete and will be out early in '98).

Check out the pictures of Fighter's Destiny (called Fighting Cup in Japan) and we'll have more details as they become available.
