Oblivion gets Shivering Isles this month

Bethesda Softworks confirms pricing and release date for Xbox 360 and PC expansions to open-ended role-playing game.

by

It was barely two months ago that word first arrived of Bethesda Softworks' Shivering Isles expansion for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and the company hasn't said much about the project in the meantime, but this week it spilled its guts in the game's official forums. Responding to questions pulled from the forum community, the game's developers revealed a number of details about the expansion, from storyline minutiae to a release date and price.

Shivering Isles will be available "everywhere" for the PC and downloadable through Xbox Live on March 27, according to executive producer Todd Howard. The PC edition of the expansion can be purchased at retailers for $30, while Xbox 360 players will have to download it from the Xbox Live Marketplace for 2400 Microsoft Points ($30).

When asked about The Elder Scrolls V, Howard replied, "I wouldn't expect TESV any time soon, I can tell you that. We're very focused on Fallout 3 right now." He also said another download might be in the cards for Oblivion, but added the team has no plans to make another full expansion like Shivering Isles. The interview contained no mention of the PlayStation 3 version of Oblivion (confirmed for a March 20 release) and when--or if--it would receive the Shivering Isles expansion.

I am laughing my azz off right now because of that Riamo kid. He cracks me up big time. He may be right about the power of the PS3 but come on Microsoft might be switching to Blu-Ray and all that sh@t PS3 Fanboys been talking about how they have the better graphics would be GONE! We already have God knows how many PS3 exclusives. Also that MGS guy said that he is impressed with the Xbox and possibly making a game on this system in the near future, MGS4 is not outta the question at all.

Yeah, but now live is down and I cant access the SI content that I just spent thirty bucks on.

Love this game on 360, no need for a $600+ bluray/MGS4 player. Seriously, what else ya got that isn't comin to 360? FF? puuulllleeaase. SDF is just upset that all their precious exclusives keep jumpin ship.

Microsoft has already sent a message to all Xbox Live members about a 14-hour downtime of their Xbox Live servers, on March 27 (coincidence...?). There is also an extensive announcement on www.xbox.com which frankly is quite fun to read. They try to make you shake the tension of the downtime with some pretty good punchlines :) As for the reason of the downtime, they say it's just about maintenance. As a matter of fact, there is no mention at all about Shivering Isles, but I can't help thinking they are taking Xbox Live down in order to buff it up with Elder Scrolls stuff !!!

Why is it that when people go on their little rants they can't take two seconds to make sure they haven't omitted words, etc. Annoying. Anyways, the 360 handles Oblivion just fine, maybe the PS3 version is a little cleaner, but who really cares unless you own both systems? If you only own a 360 then it isn't relevant how it performs on the PS3 because you don't own one to play it on anyways, right? In regards to the load times, they can be a bit annoying, but I just make sure to clear my 360's cache before I start playing and I have no problems. Bottom line, I'm 103 hours into Oblivion already and I haven't even touched the add-ons yet, plus as of Tuesday I'll have another 30 hours to go with Shivering Isles. As far as I'm concerned, Oblivion is the best value for your money on the 360, no doubt.

Riamo- I hate to say this, but graphics aren't everything, just eye candy. The 360 handle's the game just fine, I mean, it HAS been out for about two years. The load times are annoying when the game begins, but then they're quite bearable. Oh well, I honestly don't care, I just want this game.

you can see the new achievements for shivering isles already where you look @ your oblivion achievements

@ everyone who saw the graphics comparison vid on gametrailers.com!! If you guys saw the two videos on elder scrolls, you can clearly see that the xbox version cannot handle that game. there are sooo many load times on the XBOX its not funny!!!! Look at the extra things they've added on the PS3 version. Before they rated this game on gamespot, the xbox version had the BEST sign beside indicating that this game is best on XBOX but behold it longer is there. Even the people at Bethesda Softworks games said they were massivly rendering the graphics to meet PS3 standards in an interview. You see more horses more people, more clouds, smoother graphics as well brighter. Thats also why on gametrailers the headline said, "The MIGHT Mircosoft Game JUST go PS3 PWNED!!!!!!!" Stop hating and face the facts xbox fans!!! PS3 own hardware comparisons!!!

Yay. The first "official" expansion for Oblivion. Hopefully if this one is good and does well there will be more to hold us out until TES 5!

If you dont have xbox live, just do me a favour. Do the one month trial thingy, and play all your favourite games online and you will realise how much you're missing out. Its just ridiculously fun.

Are they TRYING to create bad publicity for this game, since it hasn't had any? My X360 HDD has 9GB free space. Is this going to be enough? How much is the total space requirement? Will I be able to pause and resume the download, or do I have to endure the X360's "factory noise" all night? This is a disaster scenario, any way you look at it. OK, I guess even if it came on disc it would have to copy all content to the HDD, but why must I buy MS points and block my internet connection for God knows how long? Anyway, if Shivering Isles has any quests like the one Sheogorath gave us the first time, it will be worth the wait... Man, that quest was like a RPG version of Sam&Max :)

If you dont have Xbox Live, then too bad. It costs a lot more to put games on discs than it is to put on places like Xbox Live.

Is this a worldwide release date?

This would be much better if Bethesda made a disc edition for the 360 .... I mean, not all of us out there has a decent internet conection, so they are basically keeping it from selling more due to that, and I am one of the people who wont be able to get it =(

killerchurro: There's no need to worry about the space that it will consume on your HDD. All the gameplay mechanics - the graphics engine, physics engine, and even most textures - are already on the disc. Pretty much all this expansion is is a new lick of paint. At a guess, I'd say that the expansion would be 1gb, maybe 1.5gb tops. Could be wrong though, but I'm sure that they've taken the limited capacity of an Xbox 360 HDD into account. That said, I don't know how much content you've downloaded thus far so you may have to delete an old demo or two.

Blargon just to let you know Bathesda isn't even planning on making any other Elder Scrolls games. From what I read Bathesda was not even planning to make any other games at all ever, until the head guy behind the Elder Scrolls decided to start working on that Fallout game. No news for another Elder Scrolls though as any other Bathesda fan I too hope they do decide to make one but they have not even said anything about planing another one.

killerchurro

makes perfect sense. I do know that if you purchase and download something, then delete it , you can download it again free of charge. Halo 2 pulled this stunt with the hard copies, and yes, people simply borrowed their friend's hard copy to save 10 bucks or whatever amount it was. My concern is that our tiny HDs will not have room for SI. I mean, a game 1/4 the size of Oblivion has to be huge, and because it's the first true expansion to be released on live, I know Microsoft is seriously going to have to consider larger HDs. It was charitable for them to create a PS3 version, but it's a shame that the PS3 itself... sucks. A high-five to Bethesda for being original in a crowded market.

Anyone who says "just take your xbox to a place with internet" or other such things like that there is no need for a hard copy of the expansion/DLC is wrong in my opinion, 1,It takes a while to set up an xbox live connection and it's incredibly inconvenient 2,there is no guarantee that the download won't fail and your $30 bucks are lost. 3,The console ID system means that if your xbox breaks or wears out which it will eventually then you can't use that content on any other xbox's without a working live connection.Even if your hard drive is fine. Microsoft won't allow hard copies cos they feel that people could pass one copy around to save on their hard drives, thus they would lose money so content like that will only be made available in a game of the year edition if there is enough room on one disk that is.

i hope they dont release a fifth one 2 soon. it would ruin elder scrolls a bit and franchise it like ea do with most of their games e.g. the sims

The only way I can find for ppl who haven't live is to get a 48-hours free gold subscription and download it to a friends house.Wich is ¨bad¨.

Huevo_Feo
Huevo_Feo

to duh killerchurro, we'd have to then buy our friends a subscription to xbox live and buy the microsoft points for them...unless they already had x-box live in which case its still a very akward situation that I dont think any of my friends would find normal...anyway I'm sad I cant get this for I dont has the High speed internet... and yes I know my grammers bad I just thniks it sounds kinnda neat...trying something new...anyway most people who cant afford high speed internet cant affor the 100+$ in expansions for this one game so I'll leave the argument for me and my fellow lacking-decent-internet-peoples at that... Whew Being Broke!

killerchurro
killerchurro

ok jon, and anyone else who doesnt have the miracle of internet take your hard drive (assuming you even have that) to a friend's house (assuming you have friends) and have them download the expansion onto your HD. If that doesnt work just take your whole freakin xbox over. anyways, this expansion seriously looks like the greatest videogame add-on ever conceived. A toast to Bethesda.

diabloJonathan
diabloJonathan

seriously they should have had this expansion on disc like halo 2 expansion maps though this is next gen but having it for xbox live wouldnt be fare for people who dont have internet there are oblivion fans out there who dont have internet and love the game they paid for lots of fun but it would be limited there are a lot of oblivion downloads on xbox live but people who dont have internet wont get a chance to play that, and also if i recall u would have to be online in xbox live in order to play that map unless this 1 is excluded which i hope it is heck i hope buying it is werth it

FOO_JY
FOO_JY

Their must be at least 5% of the ppl who haven't access to internet at home wich result in a -5% sell for microsoft & Bethesda. They should re-consider the retail version for 360. Please god make them choose wisely...

While Shimmering Isles will be awesome, I truly enjoy Oblivion and everything content-wise that they've put out for it, the good news in this to me is Fallout 3. I'm excited to see how that turns out, the first two Fallout games were some of the best rpg gaming you can find, period. Excellent that they're putting their efforts towards that.

I hate the fact that it has to be acquired from Live. I live out in the country, in Northern California surprisingly enough, where there is no Cable to get X-Box Live, where I'm just SOL. And not only that, but I'm not rich enough to own a really good computer either, so this decision to only make it on X-Box Live is very disappointing for me. *Sigh* I can't wait to move.

ever notice how most xbox 360 owners say ps3 owners whine because they voice their opinion...sounds a lil biased...but yet i get labeled biased....haa...again funny...all 360 owners say the same thing...its all in the makin...microsoft got 360 owners hooked...least "ps3 owers...fanboys...w-e you wanna call them" have unique opinions...instead of going by hearsay and what my friends say..."HALO IS THE BEST....?" why?...because everyone else has it...no real storyline...but hey..thats my opinion...now come with the bashing non-sense...you'll never get me to changemy opinion by defending a piece of hardware you havent built yourself....like ive said in the past...if you want to brag about something you bought...try bragging about something youve made instead...then maybe i could beg to differ...lord these narrowmind people need guidance...what happened to the maturity level of gamers these days?

sorry foolwestcoast w-e...i dont cry over them...i just play them..and for your info...this isnt xbox forums...i dont go on xbox forums because they bore me...so if you feel that not going on xbox forums is biased...thats your opinion...but at the end of the day.....i will still have my ps3 and youll have your 360....some would call this "ownd or pwned..." but yea...ill still be playing my ps3 happily :) ps...i will be purchasing elder scrolls for ps3...it was on the gs homepage...so thats why i clicked here...and also...i could careless if they come out with elder scrolls infinity for 360...doesnt justify my decision on buy ps3...so again..."pwed"...
