NWN 2, Dark Messiah getting 'limited'

Online retailers list special editions for two upcoming RPGs, detailing Neverwinter Nights 2 and Dark Messiah exclusives.

When it was released in 2002, BioWare's PC role-player Neverwinter Nights didn't launch with a pricier, featured-packed special edition. That might have been because the standard game--originally released for $60--packed in a thick manual, cloth map, and other goodies often found in beefed-up special editions.

But Neverwinter Nights' publisher, Atari, may be cooking up a bona fide special edition for the game's sequel. Game retailer GameStop's Web site lists a product listing for Neverwinter Nights 2 Limited Edition, complete with box art--a sign that the product is almost certainly genuine.

The $60 Neverwinter Nights 2 Limited Edition shares the same October 17 release date and pending ESRB rating but features several exclusives. The limited edition will ship with an art book, a cloth map of the game world, an exclusive Blessed of Waukeen feat, two special items, a unique weapon, and a "magical golden aura" that shines above your game character when playing.

If the existence of the Neverwinter Nights 2 Limited Edition proves true, the game will have three versions in all. The game is already available for preorder in two formats, DVD and CD-ROM, both for $50. Meanwhile, fan site nwn2wiki.org is now sporting dual images that indicate the game's limited editions will come with a choice of two box arts--loyal good and chaotic evil.

An Atari representative would not confirm to GameSpot the Neverwinter Nights 2 Limited Edition title.

Neverwinter Nights wasn't the only RPG to--potentially--get the privilege of a shinier special edition. A limited edition for Dark Messiah of Might Magic, Arkane Studios' fantasy RPG powered by Valve Software's Source engine, also appeared online Tuesday, this time on Amazon. The retailer lists a price of $60 for "Dark Messiah Limited Edition," $10 more than the standard version.

The Dark Messiah special edition doesn't feature a high-quality box-art image, but neither does the standard edition. The Amazon listing, however, does include a description of the limited edition's "premium in-game extras," including a making-of video, soundtrack CD, one multiplayer character skin, four unique single-player weapons, and collective character cards.

But while the different versions of Neverwinter Nights 2 share release dates, Dark Messiah's don't. The standard edition sports a September 26 date, while Amazon lists an October 24 date for the limited edition.

Ubisoft, the game's publisher, refused to confirm a Dark Messiah of Might Magic limited edition to GameSpot.

Just as FYI, and maybe someone already posted this but I am too lazy to look, the original NWN did in fact get released as a special edition when it was first released.... in fact, the website is still avaialble: http://nwn.bioware.com/about/collectors.html And it had better stuff than this new one has. Edit: ah, someone did catch it. GJ Granamere.

A flask? Really!? That so beats a cloth map. However, I don't buy many games, but this one is on the top of my list, so.... I'll probably spring for the special edition even if it only comes with a cloth map as opposed to a flask

evilbanshee stated: "blackIceJoe, has there ever been a post where you don't say "I hope this comes to 360? " I hear you man. It seems that almost every single PS3 related story has a dozen guys like blackIceJoe who slither in and whine about wanting it on the 360. The 360 certainly has a huge drought now and has had one for the past several months but it is almost over you poor SOBs. Come Nov.11 you can play your Gears of War while I am happily immersed in my limited edition NWN2 experience. Chaotic Evil edition, shaken not stirred.

There's been CE's and LE's floating around for NWN2 for some time, even pre order packages have been seen, but there's no real confirmation I heard.

I like the idea of special editions. It keeps the base price of the game down and the people who can pay more and would pay more have that option. Remember this is NWN2. If they do the same thing they did with NWN. You fire up the toolset make an item that has XYZ feats on it and you have the same thing the guy who spent the extra $10 got. Also remember for the few extra dollars you are getting some cool out of game items also. The only part I dislike there is that some countries are getting much cooler stuff than the US. Scandinavia is getting a metal flask. If it is nice that is what I want for extra stuff with the game. I just wish there was a picture of it. Now how do I order from Scandinavia to the US?

OK for the Australia release this is what you will be getting. Large, book style box 245 x 190 x 60mm Cloth Map Art Book Pen & Paper set In-game Item *Merchant’s Friend. *In game item Customer who order the collectors edition game can make characters with the free epithet feat Merchant's Friend. The player character's (PC) association with Daeghun is known by many friendly merchants. Whenever a PC with Merchant's Friend talks to a merchant, requesting access to the main store will check for that feat. Before opening the store, the merchant will comment that he’s giving the PC a special rate because he or she is a cool dude. Additionally, the Merchant’s Friend feat opens up a special dialogue option with one merchant in a prominent location. This dialogue option essentially says, "Hey, I'm a Merchant's Friend. Show me your good stuff." The store contains one of three set items for characters of all twelve classes. These items look slightly different than any other items in the game and are pretty inexpensive considering their power. They also have extensive back stories about their histories.

I don't think anyone would be foolish to pay month fee for NWN2 in this state if it was mmo game.

Thank god NWN2 isn't a MMO.

I generally find limited editions to be rather plentiful. Usually this is little more than a marketing ploy to cook sales of the product when it hits shelves. Chances the LE will be 1-for-1 with the regular version in the first pressing. Still, I am really stoked for Neverwinter Nights 2 and will be buying the LE on release day provided the game requirements do not blow my computer.

Got this info from Gamestop: Limited Edition Content: # A powerful new feat called Blessed of Waukeen, which will generate +1 bonus to all saving throws, # Two special items # Access to a unique weapon # A magical golden aura which lights above your character # Cloth map showing in-game locations # Book of art, depicting characters and scenes from the game # Two silver antique rings: Good & Evil

Am I the only one annoyed at how they are packing in a "special feat", available exculisvly through the limited edition? This presents us with a rather tricky situation: either we face someone online with a unique feat we do not know about, nor can actualy attain because we plopped down a little less cash than our enemy, or one could buy this limited edition, only to find the feat is useless. Your thoughts?

Blazer88 Getting NWN2,...no interest in Dark Messiah though just another action game being labled as a RPG. Hmm maybe because you're playing the role of an in-game character, levelling them up etc.. hence the title 'RPG'.. Name 1 RPG with no action, lol...

The great thing about NWN 2 is that, if you really just have to have some of the unique in game items...you could just make them yourself with the editor. Although I'm not sure if you'll be able to integrate your own content into the single player game like in the Elder Scrolls games...we'll see.

special edition is nothing more than more media content which you can easily get from the internet why waste dollars on what you can get for free

Played the DM demo it rocks. Any game that you can kick an orc into spikes or take off his head with one hit is a must buy in my book! I have a good PC and the 360, but the controls would suck on the 360 I'm happy with it on the PC. I agree with goony2 if we buy the $60 version it's going to lead to higher priced games for everybody NW2 looks cool too, and let's keep in mind NW2 is an RPG, while DM is an action RPG. They are both RPG's just very different kinds.

Fallout_red Well, thats not fair, the limiter edition of NWN2 has in-game impact??? UNFAIR. ------------------------------ NWN isn't an MMO. thats not really something you have to worry about. People will create super gamebreaking weapons all by themselves.

Not all the time I just would like Dark Messiah of Might Magic on either the PS3 or 360 that way I can run it faster on the system over my PC. I have a good PC just not up to par for Dark Messiah. But like I said I will just get it on my PC and it will run a little slow. Not a big deal at all.

BounceDK

Dark Messiah is the worst game I've ever played. Takes ages to load a map, takes ages to die .. It simply stalls the PC while it tries to connect to the UBI-SPYWARE server (it only stalls because a firewall is blocking it). It took 4500+ connection denies before it finally loaded the map.. Ubisoft... Went from Starforce to spyware.. Way to go .. sigh

Both games look good but I would love to see Dark Messiah of Might Magic more on the 360. But it will not happen so I guess I will wait for October 24 to get the special one. I so hope this game will be good it at least looks like it will be a nice game. As for Neverwinter Nights the first was good so I wonder what it will be like this time around.
