NPD: Xbox One is the "fastest-selling" console in November and Call of Duty leads software

Sony says the PS4 sold more overall in the US, but Microsoft claims their next-gen console sold faster.

by

Just ahead of the full NPD results, Sony said that PS4 was the "top-selling next-gen platform for both hardware and software in November." However, Microsoft countered with the claim that for the same month, the Xbox One was "the fastest selling console on the market in the U.S."

After nine days of availability, the Xbox One sold a total of 909,132 consoles. Sony did not reveal specific sales numbers for the US in November, however the NPD report notes that, "PlayStation 4 sales included an additional week within the November data month compared to Xbox One. When looking at sales on an average per-week basis, Xbox One led PS4. Keep in mind, however, that supply typically becomes constrained in the second week after launch.”

The report continues: "PlayStation 4 led U.S. hardware sales for the month, and marked the highest first month sales of a hardware platform on record... Xbox One was the second highest selling platform for the month, which marked the largest launch for a Microsoft console."

Although both consoles currently say that they've sold over 2 million each, Sony and Microsoft are selling as many units as are made available. Overall sales numbers currently equal the number of consoles produced.

For Nintendo, the 3DS continues to show growth with sales "increasing by 15% year-to-date through November.”

For the industry overall, the monthly sales report supplied by the NPD states that, though software sales were down for November, the overall industry is up 7%. Here's a full breakdown:

  • Overall retail sales up 7%
  • Software sales are down 24%
  • Hardware sales are up 58% with an 80% growth in console hardware
  • This has been the best November ever for hardware in the US. It's worth noting that the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 also launched in November.

And a few additional notes:

  • The Xbox One outsold the Xbox 360 three to one in November.
  • Xbox One users purchase an average of 2.1 games per console.
  • The attach rate (number of games per console sold) is currently higher for the PS4 than it was during the launch month for PS2 and PS3.

And, as always, there are no specific sales numbers, but here the top 10 best-selling games for November:

  1. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, X360, XBO)
  2. Battlefield 4 (PC, PS3, PS4, X360, XBO)
  3. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, X360, XBO)
  4. Madden NFL 25 (PS3, PS4, X360, XBO)
  5. Grand Theft Auto V (PS3, X360)
  6. NBA 2K14 (PC, PS3, PS4, X360, XBO)
  7. Skylanders Swap Force (3DS, PS3, PS3, Wii, Wii U, X360, XBO)
  8. Just Dance 2014 (PS3, PS4, Wii, Wii U, X360, XBO)
  9. Disney Infinity (3DS, PS3, Wii, Wii U, X360)
  10. FIFA 14 (PS3, PS4, Vita, X360, XBO)

The NPD reports, "Driven by continued success of Grand Theft Auto V as well as strong sales of NBA 2K14, year-to-date through November 2013, Take 2 Interactive led software sales as the top publisher.”

Noticeably missing from the list of top games are the late-October and early November titles Super Mario 3D World, Batman: Arkham Origins, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

Again Microsoft being Microsoft lying as usual , just like there fanboys give false numbers and false info. And before you xbots attack me I'm a Sony , pc player no xbone . When I went to school to get my degree in Gsp many people in industry told me how Microsoft throws money around so people don't print or talk bad about there system including gamestop and ign as well as developing games and then porting them to ps3 so they had problems . There lucks gonna run out Xbox one gpu is 50% less

So the PS4 sold more in a day than the Xbox One did in the entirety of November, but the Xbox One is the fastest selling launch console?  This is the definition of cherry picking.  It's a load of crap.

Shit... after 7 & 8 years of waiting for new hardware, gamers became "digitally frustrated." Now that it's here, we can't get it fast enough. The XB1 & PS4 are both great consoles that compliment each other quite well.

I'm just wondering how long the Wii U will stick around for (Wii U, not Nintendo). It's clear gamers are interested in a next-gen experience that doesn't include the Wii U. The XB1 & PS4 have been out for 3-4 weeks and both have already sold half of what took the Wii /u just over a year to sell.

So the Xbox sold 900k in 9 days in the US.  We know the PS4 sold 1 million in 1 day in the US and Canada.  So either these numbers don't add up or a lot of Canadians bought the PS4 compared to Americans.

@Vylsith

LOL yeah pretty much.

Both companies sold 80% of the units during launch weekend and then have practically no stock for the rest of the month.  MS uses the fact that it is released one week later (so less days in November) to spin it that it is faster selling in November.

@sgt_hunter The PS4 was released a week earlier so it is no surprise it had overall more sold units for the month of November. What the report does show is that the xbox one sold at a faster pace in the short time it was released for November.

And you think its fair to compare two weeks of sales to one week of sales?

If the PS4 only barely outsold Xone in two weeks while the Xone was available for only one week then in the long run the Xone is performing better in the USA.

However, and this is a big however, these sales are meaningless. The only thing Microsoft proved is that their USA supply chain is better. In terms of popularity these early sales are meaningless. They are both pretty much sold out.

In Q1 of 2014 both consoles will be on the market long enough to infere which is more popular. At that point the one week difference is insignificant because many more weeks have followed it. Worldwide popularity will take even longer to infere because Xone still hasnt launched in many countries.......

Vylsith
Vylsith

@urbansys@sgt_hunterExcept that's not true.  The claim that the Xbox One sold faster is based on a fallacy of false analogy.  Instead of comparing the two consoles over identical time periods, the rate of sale was based on the first 9 days on the market for the Xbox One and the first 16 days on market for the PS4.  In fact, the PS4 sold more consoles on it launch day than the Xbox One sold in the entirety of November.  You can find this out by multiplying the 110,000 consoles sold per day by 9.  That's 1 million.  Sony sold over one million in North America.  Therefore, the PS4 obviously sold more during the first 9 days, since it already sold more based off launch alone.  What Microsoft is saying isn't true from any logical standpoint, but they can pretend it's true by fudging the numbers.  The PS4 sold more and sold faster.  That's the reality of the situation.

mrvulcanraven
mrvulcanraven

@urbansys @sgt_hunter  No, what the report shows is that PS4 virtually sold out all in one weekend, and Xbox One did not. PS4 sold loads in 2 days and then virtually none after because of supply constraints. It still is out of stock, but you can buy Xbox Ones quite easily it seems- on amazon today I believe.

PS4 is really the fastest selling, because it sold MORE in its 48 hour launch weekend than Xbox One did in its entire first 9 days on sale....

All that is happening is Microsoft are spinning this to compare their average sales over their first 9 days versus the average sales of PS4 over 2 weeks, knowing full well the second week PS4 probably sold virtually nothing on average per day because there were none around to sell. Perfect for Microsoft's spin then, because they just add those extra days to lower PS4's average.

This is extremely misleading and deceptive. If PS4 had launched the same day, it would still have sold more than Xbox One and then Microsoft couldn't have claimed fastest console based on an average of the number of days it has been out.

Its pretty pathetic PR spin from Microsoft to be honest. Statistical analysis shows Sony sold out, sold out faster, sold more hardware and sold more software in the USA, a region where 360 dominated....

night_drifter05
night_drifter05

@urbansys @sgt_hunter But they ignored the fact the PS4 hadn't released in Europe for those first 9 days and still hasn't released in Asia. It's pretty much a meaningless number when you really break it up and realize the PS4 sold pretty much just as fast in the US/Canada alone as the Xbox One did worldwide and now that the PS4 is out in Europe they are still currently leading sale's without even being launched in one of it's largest regions. But still, these are good sales number's no matter how you look at it, but when you break it down the Xbox One sale's aren't as great as everyone is trying to make it seem.

Vylsith
Vylsith

@minecraftgreek@Rusmurf Killzone Shadowfall sold the most, then Forza if preorders are any comparison.  Killzone Shadowfall outsold Forza by about 5 to 1 though.  It's speculation, but it's speculation based on relatively solid circumstantial evidence.

@ronnet

I didn't compare two weeks sales to one week sales.  Where did you read this?

"If the PS4 only barely outsold Xone in two weeks while the Xone was available for only one week then in the long run the Xone is performing better in the USA."

You seem to be the one doing such comparison.

If you ask me to do a comparison, it would be something like this:

(This is based on official sales figures and launch dates.)

Sony PS4:
2.1M sold as of *Dec 1*.
Nov 15 in NA (2 countries) ->  17 days since launch -> 2 x 17 = 34
Nov 29 in 29 other countries. -> 3 days since launch -> 3 x 29 = 87
Total days on sale:  121

MS Xbox One:
2M sold in 18 days
Nov 22 in 13 countries ->  18 days x 13 = 234
Total days on sale: 234

So in a per-day-per-country basis, the sales rate is higher for PS4.

@RevLux@rasterror All fanboys are annoying but the reason why you come across it more is because the 360 comes bundled with a headset where the PS3 you have to get one and the Wii U's online is lacking. I'm no fanboy and was talking to a buddy of mine my local Gamestop about how stupid fanboyism is and how they limit their selves to being loyal to one company. He's more of a Sony fan and admitted that Sony fanboys are worse. You have to admit that their are far less comments on a Sony article than one about MS and the majority of those are from Sony fanboys speaking utter stupidity.

RevLux
RevLux

@rasterror I find that it's usually only fanboys who try to claim their fanboys are more "mature" than the other system's fanboys. All fanboys are annoying and every system has it's fare share of silly immature gamers. That said, I encounter far more excessive profanity, racial slurs, and homophobic remarks while playing on Xbox live with my 360 than any other platform's multiplayer. (Sony, Nintendo.) So far that has, thankfully, not been the case on Xbox one. I assume, however, that you are referring to posted comments. In which case my first sentence stands.

Vylsith
Vylsith

@crazy-roman@urbansys@night_drifter05@sgt_hunter It's cherry picking.  They're comparing rate of sale for the entirety of November instead of the same time period for both consoles.  If we compare number sold per day for the first 9 days of both consoles the PS4 easily beats out the Xbox One.  If we look at the first 16 days for the PS4 and the first 9 days for the Xbox One, there's a lot more days where the PS4 didn't have supply and the huge number on launch day is split across more days.  It's a huge fallacy of false analogy and Microsoft knows it.  Microsoft isn't exactly known for throwing around the truth when it's not in their favor though.

Vylsith
Vylsith

@urbansys@night_drifter05@sgt_hunter If you look at the first 9 days of both consoles, the PS4 sold faster than the Xbox One.  This is a fallacy of false analogy.  The calculation for the rate of sale for the Xbox One is based on only 9 days, where it's based on 16 for the PS4.  This means the launch day (which has by far the most sold for both consoles) is spread out across more days on the PS4.  This makes the numbers obviously skewed.  A real comparison would be over the same time period of 9 days for both consoles, in which case the PS4 wins easily since the PS4 already had over a million consoles sold in NA on launch day alone (and 1 million is how many Microsoft sold based on their 110,000 consoles per day number).

Also, it's not keeping pace with the PS4.  The Xbox One is about 3 days behind the PS4 for sale rate.  Close, but not keeping pace.

jmc88888
jmc88888

@crazy-roman@urbansys@night_drifter05@sgt_hunter

Exactly.  The same spin could of been said about the PS4.  Such as...

The PS4 sold 1 million the first weekend (fri-sun), meaning it sold ~333,333  per day.

This is another last ditch effort by Microsoft to attempt to appear to be on par with PS4.  It's just another example of how journalists are just PR arms of various corporations.

PS4 has 50-400 percent gap of raw power, depending on what aspect your looking at, and this number goes up since the XB1 will rarely if ever be able to use all of its available power thanks to using the ESRAM method, which in order to fit the framebuffer of next gen games + have room left over to boost the memory bandwidth past the 68 gb/s, the ESRAM really needed to be 128 mb's, not 32 mb's.  The sad fact is they couldn't fit 128 mb's on the chip, which meant their whole strategy couldn't work.

It's like saying you need gas money to travel from SF to NY but you only have enough money for gas to get to Salt Lake City, but they decided to go on the trip anyways, rather then stay at home and plan until you come up with something that works.

People are going to wonder why one game looks better (higher quality), runs better (higher framefrate), and displays at a native 900/1080p compared to Xbox One's 600/720/900p AND costs $100 less, and nobody in the games business told them before they plunked down the money.

It's not just the raw power difference, or the difficulty of coding for ESRAM, but also the SIZE of the ESRAM.   Next gen framebuffers will be easily be hitting 32-40-64-79 mb's.  So you tell me how they are going to fit those size framebuffers AND have room to boost bandwidth all in 32 mb's.  They can't.  In fact the only framebuffer's that fit in under 32 mb's land in the 600/720/900p range, depending on quality.  900p for last gen quality or barely next gen quality.  720 for early next gen quality. 600p for mid to late next gen quality.

Xbox One will have to deal with deferred rendering framebuffers because all the multiplatform engines like Unreal, Cryengine, etc...utilize them.  They can't just skip it.  Well Forza did, but that won't be passable for long, as it really doesn't even pass now.

We are seeing multiplatform games on the PS4 already having better quality graphics, higher resolution, and higher framerates.   While in some instances the gap will narrow, in most instances the gap will only widen.  Which should be taken into account when you already have a gap far wider then any 360 > PS3 multiplatform game.  There was never a 360 game running at 720p that ran at 480p on PS3, let alone an Xbox 360 game that did that, and had better quality graphics and still ran at a higher framerate.  While both consoles can get better effiencies going forward, the gains will be muted by the ESRAM of the Xbox One, whereas the PS4 has no such limitation and thus the gains going forward will be greater on the PS4, and it is starting from this sort of gap.

Too bad there aren't media outlets that will present these facts to prospective buyers before they overpay for a lesser power console that is actually gimped by ESRAM so it can't even achieve the power it's lower specs indicate it should still have.   Instead they continue to look the other way about these major issues and then take PR spin and present it as facts.

I get wanting both systems, I too as a gamer, like buying all systems.  But with multiplatform games looking best, console wise on PS4, and even better on PC, that leaves the Xbox One with only its exclusives and price to sway a buyer.  If only 5-10 percent of the games you buy are exclusives, and odds are they are, then Microsoft really needs to start pumping out QUALITY exclusives, and massively lower the Xbox One's price before people in the know will buy the console.  I feel very sorry for people thinking they are going to get a similar gaming experience on the Xbox One.  They're not.  But look around and few media outlets are informing their members of this situation.

Voice controls don't need Kinect or PS EYE to implement.  You already have a cable box, and your remote control works better.  Saying Xbox ESPN takes the same amount of time to hit 1033 on a remote control (my ESPN channel number).  Sure it's good for when you lose your remote, it breaks, or the batteries die.  But this is rare.  On top of this HDTV's already have such features, and as time goes on this will be standard.   Fantasy football can be done better on PC and smartphones and you get to choose who you use, unlike the Xbox One whose deal only includes NFL.COM's version of fantasy football.  (not to mention you'd be that guy taking up screen real estate degrading the football viewing experience for anyone else watching the game for YOUR stats).

Finally when it comes to media functions, well you already no doubt have the media functions at your fingertips.  Your decade old PC, your Wii U, your 360, your PS3...all do the same thing.  So it really shouldn't even be a consideration.  Just that it's there, so you will be okay to replace whatever device with another one and not lose access to it.  That's not a feature.

So why is there this meme of Xbox One does media better.  Really?  Both play netflix just like your 360 or PC from 2005.  In fact some people prefer the earlier consoles version of Netflix over the Xbox One's version because it's easier to navigate.  Whoops.

It all comes down to games and price.  It both cases the games will run poorer in quality, resolution, and framerate, and you're paying $100 more.

The last refuge of a losing position is such manipulation of statistics.  Which of course would be worse if the media was actually doing their job instead of sending their readers out to be slaughtered.

@urbansys @night_drifter05 @sgt_hunter But what I don't understand is, they said it sold faster... but the quote states that MS sold around 900,000 consoles in the US within 9 days... the PS4 launched and sold 1 million in 24 hours in the USA (and Canada) so surely that's quicker?
