NPD: June 3DS sales hit 225,000 units in US

Nintendo's portable outperforms Xbox 360, PS3 to become best-selling game system in the region for the month.

by

The 3DS sold 225,000 units in the United States during June, topping the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to become the best-selling game system for the period.

Nintendo announced the news today, citing data from the NPD Group. By comparison, the Xbox 360 sold 140,000 units during the month, while Sony has not disclosed sales for the PS3.

Sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware rose by more than 40 percent over June 2012, Nintendo added.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold over 505,000 units during June, Nintendo said, adding that 20 percent came through the eShop. Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D sold 108,000 units in the month, while Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon added nearly 115,000 copies to bring its total lifetime sales tally to more than 750,000 units.

Nintendo did not disclose Wii U sales.

The NPD Group released its June 2013 report minutes ago. Check back soon for more on the results.

The 3DS has established its dominance. Let's see what Nintendo can do for the Wii U.

I Highly Recommend a Nintendo 3DS to anyone looking at buying a handheld console!

I bought a 3DS XL this month, dled a ton of old NES, GB games on the shop and purchased a few cartridges. Nice little handheld, although It does make my fingers cramp up, and the childish design could be less. I'm pleased. Vita didn't seem to have much of a library but it could have an extensive online one. Seems like it would be more comfortable for my hands as well. The 3D does work pretty well. I'm surprised how well it does it. Battery power is also on par with the advance and GB original. I'm pleased.

3DS deserves it some pretty awesome games came out in the last months.

It's quite obvious both PS3 and X360 do worse the 3DS, they are 7 years-old consoles. Seems quite silly to make comparisons.

Also, I don't think it's smart to hate on the Vita/wii U from any side especially because Vita is doing better than the Wii U.

Good deal for the 3DS. Happy for them.

That said i enjoy my Vita more.

Aside from the library the 3ds is utter crap. I want to hit the guys who designed it with only one circle pad instead of 2 analog sticks, a sliding volume control instead of buttons and a cartridge slot without lid. If it werent for the games I would have sticked with my Vita

This happened only because no one wants to buy ps3s or xbox360s now with their upgraded versions coming out later this year.

You can never count Nintendo out. They are one of the most craftiest game companies there is. That's why they've survived independently for so long.

@KBFloYd

Nah the ps3 will continue to sell because Sony  will continue to support it for at least 4 more years.

@DeViLzzz when I bought a psvita I felt really stupid bc I realized how much better the 3ds is with game exlusives than the psvita

@DeViLzzz i think 3DS is quite good as it offers donkey kong like games. but hold on your horses. PS4 and Xboxone is due to launch obviously majority of gamers are selling their Ps3 and x360 now who cant afford a new console so this sales figure is not the actual figure that will be as of 2014 feb.

@istuffedsunny Remember when the 3DS was having a rough time when it first came out? Its the same story with the Wii U at the moment but look where the 3DS is now.

@zzamaro the wiiU outsold the vita this week with the release of pikmin 3 in japan.

@krystyla I honestly don't mind any of those things... Not many games on the 3ds take advantage of the circle pad pro anyways, not saying it shouldn't have a second pad build in, but's not that big of an issue. Also I like the sliding volume bar, I while listening to music I can change the volume without taking it out of my pocket or even looking at it. Also not having a lid is really a nitpick, I've never accidentally took the game out, while playing it that is, maybe once or twice will trying to stuff in my pocket along with wallet and phone, like an idiot.

@krystyla
I've always found button controlled volume settings to be much more tedious since I'm frequently in situations where I have to raise to quickly lower the volume of my system. Why would you leave your 3DS without a game cart inside? It's never been a problem since the original GameBoy.

The only legit complaint is the absence of a 2nd circle pad and yes, while most 3DS games wouldn't utilize it or require it, it still would've been a welcome feature, regardless, the 3DS library overall doesn't require it.

@krystyla A second analog stick is a horrible idea, fps dont work on hand held consoles.

Vegamyster
Vegamyster

@krystyla Its not like you're buying a 3ds for FPS, few games would actually benefit from a second analog. Even playing Kid Icarus with the face buttons as a artificial analog worked fine.

@Jamie-L

You act like this is the only time this is happening, when the 3DS has been selling extremely well for nearly 2 years now, making it the fastest selling console of all time (or is it fastest selling handheld?)

sonyfreak456
sonyfreak456

No, people want 3DSes now because It's has a great library of games.

@KBFloYd @zzamaro  you guys are comparing apples with oranges. Vita is a handheld and WIIU is home console. stop comparing the two. Many people like yakuza game series in japan but in US people like more of Halo or God of War. If pikmin sold great in japan doesn't mean it will be sold great all over the world. its the same I am not the fan of JRPGS which are so much popular in japan and now gaining popularity in US doesn't mean i am wrong its just preference. if you want to compare then it should be  3DS with Vita.

rIVAL_sWORD84

@abHS4L88 @WolfGrey  i own a vita and i am enjoying the fps and action adventure like uncharted and assassin creed, plus i get to play games like guacamelle and rayman. I may seriously purchase 3DS XL if they bring mario galaxy to it. but the only thing that keeps me away from it is 4 face buttons. I like games  the Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, hope they bring donkey kong tropical freeze but awaiting for mario galaxy. I am not a big fan of monster hunter like games though i liked soul sacrifice on vita. but other JRPGS not a big fan of it. does 3DS have any game like gravity rush on vita. i played the demo of donkey kong on 3DS liked the analog but its only one.

krystyla
krystyla

@Helios_Sun @krystyla who the hell is talking about first person shooters I dont care the least about fps but a 2nd analog stick is great for any 3d game and the Vita has plenty of those and if the 3ds had a 2nd circlepad out of the box there would be more for the 3ds as well

@sonyfreak456 3DS in a handheld console not a home console, Ps3/ xbox/ Vita is targeted towards the different crowd. People who prefer only 2D platformers and jrpgs will buy 3DS. I have Vita and Ps3, and will buy ps4. I dont live in US. This survey is for US. Majority of people who buy 3DS are mostly people who are too busy to play games on the home console.I have vita cuz i dont get time to play games on weekdays. That explains why the handheld sales is high compared to home console. and Ps3 and xbox have more games and i prefer them over 3Ds games. there is no Mario galaxy as well on 3DS.

Jamie-L
Jamie-L

@sonyfreak456 Maybe...but I don't see how anyone can deny that the release of the new consoles is a contributing factor.

@WolfGrey 360 also intends to extend the 360's life by 5 years. I don't think either will go that long though.

inso-maniac

@WolfGrey not only that but it would be stupid of them not to continue support for a few more years

@rIVAL_sWORD84 @WolfGrey @KBFloYd

No going by the ps2 which only stopped production last year, i would say it has a long lease on life.

Sony will support it for a long time just like the ps2 and it will continue to sell well into the next gen.

It's very smart business wise.

Thanks to that, it's numbers will far exceed the 360 in the end.

@Skyt_Aura  Interesting article you wrote Skyt. I agree that the games are lesser on ps vita as compared to 3DS. But I find ps vita games more interesting and I find indie games like hardboiled, escape plan  and guacamelle to be interesting  and then the upcoming games of lineup counter spy, Tear Away, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee - New 'n' Tasty, Rayman legends will be fun. On the other hand i like to play luigis mansion, donkey Kong kid icarius and zelda on 3DS. but nevertheless Ps vita is also good. i may buy 3DS down the line but so far i am having a blast with ps vita games.

rIVAL_sWORD84

@abHS4L88 Even i wouldnt sell, but there ae so many ads i see since the may of this year where people are selling ps3 with sealed packed games no shit. its like that here where i live. and i love my ps3 and i am still playing games on it and will be buying new games like arkham origins and watchdogs, i dont like to buy console on release since who knows what flaws it may have so still waiting for ps4 and x1 to be released and then decide which one to buy, though i am leaning towards ps4 since my friends will buy that.

Good morning Ab and your right i will be getting a 3DS soon. Got plenty of titles to pick up that i do.

I would say my Vita gets the most use as a psp game enhancer. Being able to use a second analog , enhancing the visuals and audio with the options, and adding other stuff to them is great.

Soul Sacrifice, P4 Golden , and others have me happy with it too.

But 3DS has some nice titles worth picking up for me. Plus i need to get it for Pokemon anyway.

Sonic Lost World is coming to the 3DS and it's looking magnificent, I'm considering getting both the Wii U and 3DS versions.

@abHS4L88 thanks for info, are there more games like zelda or kid icarius. they both look good Kid icarius reminded me of ratchet in a final fantasy settings looks nice. also if mario galaxy is not coming , is there any other game like it on 3ds.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@rIVAL_sWORD84

Not sure if a large scale 3D Mario game will come to the 3DS (it might but later down the line), Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is definitely not going to be on the 3DS as the game is made for the Wii U (plus, it would hurt the selling power of the game, maybe later down the line like Returns 3D).

Games like Gravity Rush? Well that's a fairly unique title and I haven't played it so it's hard to recommend games that are similar to a game I've never played. The 3DS does shine the most when it comes to JRPGs and strategy RPGs and if they're not for you, then your next best bet would be Nintendo's first party games like Zelda, Kid Icarus, and the eShop (which is loaded with awesome and challenging platformers).
