Notch only behind Egypt president in Time 100 poll

Minecraft creator receives second-most votes in magazine's "most influential people in the world" poll, only behind Mohamed Morsi.

Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson is the second-most influential person in the world, only behind Egypt's president Mohamed Morsi, according to Time magazine voters.

The publication's 2013 Time 100 Poll asks readers to cast votes for the leaders, artists, innovators, icons, and heroes they think are the most influential people in the world.

Voting ends today. The final list will be chosen by Time editors and revealed on April 18.

At press time, Notch had received 148,687 "Absolutely" votes to 16,766 "No Way" selections. Morsi currently has 171,249 "Absolutely" votes and an even greater 219,928 "No Way" votes.

Currently in third place is Internet entrepreneur and Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, who is publicly encouraging readers to vote for Notch.

Other names on the list include Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, Pope Francis, German chancellor Angela Merkel, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, and North Korean leader Kim Jong un, among others.

No other game creators were named to the list.

Wow, all of this minecraft news is starting to remind me of Angry Birds all over again...Which, by the way, you don't hear people talking about as much anymore.

The polls have closed!  Hillary Clinton has edged out Rand Paul!  However, Jackie Chan left them both in the dust.  *facepalm*

I think this thing about "Most influential people in the world" is more about popularity. Besides it's the most influential, it doesn't state if it was good or bad influence.

What is irritating about these comments is that if Minecraft had been a first person shooter like Call of Duty there would be nothing but LOVE..

However since Minecraft is a game that appeals to EVERYBODY (non gamers included), has blocky graphics,  and has no blood, guts and guns..

there is nothing but hate...

So this guy makes one of the biggest time sinks the gaming industry has ever seen, where the biggest purpose of the game is doing nothing of any importance to any person alive, dead, or unborn and he is just one under a great influential leader?

I've played Minecraft it is insanely addictive, it also gives you an even bigger sense of "Oh god! What am I doing with my life?" than Runescape and World of Warcraft put together.

Somehow I get the impression that if this were Hideo Kojima the comments in this section would be really positive.

That's only logical if you guys follow what's currently happening in Egypt. Mursi was a president who's been accused of series of crimes including murder.  It's only natural many hate him and voting no.

Nevertheless, way to go Notch, you deserve it!

Seems like a highly skewed list.

Why would even the Egyptian president be "globally influential". In the news, maybe. But influential????

So this guy experiences a fluke of success with one video game and now all of a sudden he's being considered for "most influential person in the world"?

Jesus, how low people's standards have fallen.

I´m pretty sure that poll is only about INCLUSION into the list, not the actual final list itself. There are 153 possible candidates for getting into the list, so people are obviously voting for those that they dont think have as much of a chance of getting in there. Also, the polls on the internet, so game designers and internet personalities have an unusually good chance of being elected.

The man provided a platform, as did Ebay and Amazon, still, give the man a little credit. Sure he won't be able to cure cancer and fight communism, but he did something that we all enjoy... for a while.

Okay, he made a fun sandbox game but I don't see how that makes him globally significant.

Although I'd still probably vote him over all the asshat politicians.

People who HATE Notch for being up there, who else would you vote for?  PSY?  Most are just celebrities or politicians.

I'm more concerned about Morsi being on top, because he is actually influencial and I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Well if you subtract the negative votes from the positive, this guy wins.

While I am happy for the guy getting recognition for something he's passionate about (or WAS passionate about), it seems absurd that he's getting THIS much attention. From a gaming standpoint, his ideas have never really been implemented, but it's not like they've never been thought of before.

I don't see Notch as a influential person, rather his gaming concept is. In what way does he influence people in doing things better, money wise, yes, developing wise, no, he's a very lazy developer, most of the newest gaming ideas for minecraft comes from the huge fan base, so idea wise, he lacks them. Even his newest IP is lacking, 0x10c.

Ok, so now everyone here hates Notch because he's winning some poll?

Seriously, it's starting to sound more and more like a gathering place for forceful hipsters here everyday. You can like popular things guys (or people in this case), it's pretty easy.

Just goes to show how pathetic our society has become that some indy developer with a retarded nickname is voted '2nd most popular'....I weep for the young generation.

DKant

Yes, they would have. That would have just reflected Kojima's legacy and his influence on a much wider cross section of gamers.

That said, even Kojima being on the list would have ONLY reflected the massive skew towards Internet/technology personalities an online poll would naturally have.

The sad truth is, gaming is not mass-market media just yet. It would be extremely hard to defend a no.2 position for a gaming icon of any repute, on a GLOBAL power list. Something closer to ninety or hundred would still be acceptable - it would be a meaningful recognition of the RISE of gaming as an influential medium. But there's no way we are near no.2 yet. Not even Kojima, nor Warren Spector, nor anyone from the Nintendo side of the world.

Fanible

@experience_fade And more rightly so.  He has a portfolio.  Not saying I would vote one way or another, but Notch has only done one good thing, and some people think he's some kind of miracle maker.  One good game (regardless of how good anyone thinks it is), does not a brilliant mind make.

@nechiken Pretty much any game he tweets about is guaranteed to sell an additional 1k units.

Also, Scrolls.

This is the whole idea behind a Democratic Republic, so people are free to make amazingly stupid choices in life.

@DKant By far the biggest Arab country. Long time ally of America and the West. Strong ties to Turkey. Economically powerful. Being President of (80 million) Egyptians makes you the go-between guy for the US to much of the region. Arab countries also use Egypt as a mediator in their local troubles.

Sakirenn

@Kravyn81 I wouldn't exactly call over 10 million sales and counting a fluke. That and he's done a lot more than just Minecraft. People don't respect him just because he made a game a bunch of people happen to like, people respect him because he's an awesome person.

@Dezuria I'd probably vote a more infuential game developer if needed, or better, someone who has actually done something important other than develop a game in Java that somehow became a hit because no one thought of bringing lego to real game form ( Gotta tip off the hat to that, I feel stupid for it).

Freedomination
Freedomination

@Dezuria err.. Its not a vote for who you think should be most influential. I'm sure there are people for whom Minecraft is the strongest influence on their lives. But i doubt theres that many of them. For me personally i dont even play the game so any local politician in my area is more inluential to me than Notch.

Realistically the list should be made up of investors, politicians, religious leaders and scientists. Like them or not its these people who will most likely have an influence on how we live our lives in the future.

TohouAsura

@sune_Gem People hated Notch long before that, when he promised alot of things for his game and almost never held true to those promises, mainly just taking vacations and spending his sweet dosh.

Sadly  your right, but without putting out a poll that is nothing more than a popularity contest "Time Magazine"( Which has become, in these latter years, nothing more than a glamourized pop culture magazine) would not pull near the amount of interest. The good ole days of average intelligence(?) are long gone. If they didn't get it from CNN, Twitter, or Facebook or TMZ etc.........., then it doesn't hold the same umph of reality.

Well said on your part just the same.
