No Quake for BeOS

Rumors of a Be version of Quake proliferate on the Web. Could it be so?

Comments

Rumors on the Web have said that a Be version of Quake is already complete. And given that the Be Corporation just recently released its high-performance operating system for Intel processors, the rumors could easily have been fact.

However, when GameSpot News contacted id Software about the validity of the unsourced rumors, id spokesperson Barrett Alexander told us, "The bottom line is that we are unwilling to proceed with the release of BeQuake until we have some legal issues resolved."

If you're not familiar with Be, here's a brief history.

Be is the brainchild of ex-Apple president of product Jean-Louis Gassee. His company set out to create a new operating system that would effectively jump ahead of the technology used by other companies' operating systems (OS).

Be first gained public attention after Apple, seeking to find a new core for its upcoming Rhapsody technology, considered buying Be and its operating system. Be would have been utilized as the underlying technology for the new and faster MacOS.

Instead, Apple surprised industry watchers by buying NeXT, an alternative operating system and technology company created by Apple founder Steve Jobs.

Still, Be has been able to port its OS to the Mac - and more recently to the Intel platform - to allow computer users a new operating environment option.

Although the list of applications and games isn't as great as the Windows 95 platform, it shows promise as an operating system that can push the boundaries of technology and be amazingly efficient. We've heard that it can boot up in 8 seconds flat.
