No PS3 Portal 2 Move support after all

[UPDATE] Valve now denies its mind-bending sequel will feature "full" integration with Sony's motion-sensing system; 3D ruled out.

[UPDATE] Since this article's publication, Valve issued the following statement: "There's a story making the rounds regarding Portal 2 support for PS3 Move. Unfortunately this quote was 'lost in translation'--Portal 2 does not include support for Sony's motion controller." The original article--which quotes the PlayStation Blog story accurately--is below.

Back in 2007, Valve cofounder Gabe Newell was one of the PlayStation 3's greatest detractors, calling the console a "total disaster." However, that all changed at last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, when Newell made a shock appearance at Sony's press briefing to announce Portal 2 was coming to the PlayStation 3. He also went one step further, saying that the PS3 version of portal would be the best version of the game, thanks to Steamworks support on the PlayStation Network.

Players will be able to control Portal 2's robot protagonists with the PlayStation Move.

Today, the world learned another reason why the PS3 edition of Portal 2 might be preferable to its Xbox 360 and PC counterparts. Speaking to the German PlayStation Blog, Valve writer Chet Faliszek revealed that the game will have "full support" for the PlayStation Move motion-controlling system. He did not reveal if the game could be played with just one LED-emitting controller, or whether (more likely) the thumbstick-equipped navigation controller would also be required.

Though he did promise eventual complete Move support, Faliszek did warn that "Move is a completely new experience for us, so the system is not yet fully integrated [into Portal 2]." It is unclear if the game will have Move support at launch or if will be patched in later, as it was with Heavy Rain and several other titles last year.

Faliszek also ruled out a 3D version of Portal 2. He said that the game's heavy emphasis on "spatial imagination" would be overwhelming in 3D, so the developers opted against it. He said such new technology would have to have been an integral part of development from the beginning to make sense--and in this case, it wasn't.

Portal is set to ship for the Mac, PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on April 20 in North America, with a European release two days later. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

common! a game where you carry around a funny looking gun that shoots portals into walls...mmm...PS Move seems natural for this game already. I'd say at least patch it later. and for the lame ppl claiming that the Move is lame, just try it with Socom4 or KZ3 online, where there's Move, I want be using a controller. And those who said it's cumbersome to setup or use the Move, then I bet my *** they don't even own one cause that claim is 0% accurate. I also think 3d should be added, saying that it's overwhelming but wasn't at the start of development is not enough, at least added later, we're not asking for killer 3d experience, leave that for portal 3.

no move no buy. with the sharpshooter the experience is awesome. so much so that i will not buy a shooter that does not support the move. i don't knock anyone who doesn't want to try it, but i feel that all shooters should give you at least the option of playing with the move.

I find it funny that ppl keep commenting on whether the move will be supported or not... however, the part I find most fascinating, and most interested in testing, is how the PS3 version is going to be the best. Whether it's true or not, I just want to see if I can tell a difference, that's what's most exciting!

Was the linked blog changed? I ask because I know some German and while there was a question on Move, what I read didn't seem to suggest there would be "full support" for move - only that the interviewer seems to have gotten a little over excited while asking questions. Anyhow, my (admittedly limited) interpretation of the blog section would be Q: Portal 2 appears predestined for PlayStation Move. ... ... A: Playstation Move is a very new technology for us therefore that system has not yet been integrated. ... Maybe there was a typo somewhere and the word "nicht" wasn't picked up. Otherwise, there didn't seem to be a mention by the interviewee of Portal 2 supporting Move, only a presumption by the interviewer.

ummm... why would it? then it really would have folks walking around going PEW PEW PEW at the screen making portals, or doing the fireball motion from street fighter... or just tapping the screen? heck i do not know. portal is meant to be a first person puzzler. you do not see a big hullabaloo for a kinect version because everyone can agree that playing portal with a wiimote(IF IT EVER CAME TO THE WII... what a joke!) move, or kinect would be kinda cumbersome... and weird.

yeah as long as vale keeps making games for the ps3 also its all good. now just bring on half-life 3 as well and we can all be a lil happier.

it does not matter. all that matters is that valve is making a game for PS3.

It's a shame since I have the Move, but I wouldn't have used it anyway. There is a ridiculously steep learning curve when using the move in any shooter or first person games.

so we can play with mac and pc users but we cant use the move...

I'll wait to buy when they patch it for move controls.

@Animatronic64 Word. While I haven't really been a PC person a while (tired of upgrading every so often), I do agree that, ultimately, PC is superior to all. Doesn't have motion control? Do some research and you'll learn how to do it yourself. Besides, motion control shouldn't be available on PC anyways (unless its hand motions and what not because anyone who uses a PC has been sitting down). I'm glad its not. It shouldn't be. Pretty sure it will have its fast-paced moments that I'm sure motion-controls won't be able to keep up with.

That is a little disappointing. But it is still going to be a great game. Motion controls or not.

@Animatronic64 You're preaching to the choir about the PC version. Although, having Portal cross platform PC/PS3 means it should be equally good on either system. =P

@XeonForce Enlighten you about what? Portal 2 is a PC game ported over to consoles. The PC version has capability for the best controls, graphics, and sound. For one, you are not limited to what hardware you can use. If you want an awesome sound card for the best possible sound? Get one. If you want a high end video card for top notch high resolution graphics? Get one. Not only that but I'm sure someone out there will make Move or even the Wii remote work with Portal 2. If you so desire, you can actually play Half-Life 2 with a Wii mote. The possibilities are endless and therefor it is the best version. Now, to some I may come across as some PC fanboy, but believe me, I am not. I have a PS3 and it's my favorite console out of the three. I bet you guys just gave me a bunch of thumbs down because you think I'm hating on the PS3 version. That's not the case. I was just making a point. And ultimately I think that Portal 2 will be an enjoyable game regardless of what platform you play it on. I was just poking a little fun at the quote; nothing more.

No 3D because of the games empahsis on spatial imagination? You have GOT to be kidding. This sounds a lot like Infocom claiming the resolution of your own imagination is better than computer graphics. Ah well, whatever. I've got 3D Vision so I'll be playing it the way they should have meant it to be played.

I will be purchasing the PS3 version of the game, then after I verify that the free PC version is indeed attached to my Steam account, I'll sell back the PS3 version the same day as it's useless to me at that point plus, I'll be making a profit! Nice and legal!

@Animatronic64 Actually, he only said that the PS3 version would be the best version for consoles. http://au.gamespot.com/news/6265808.html I'm not sure why it's written this way in the article. But I'm thinking that it's an honest mistake.

So, no Move....Whatever. The game will still be freaking awesome. It comes out pretty close to Mortal Kombat though......Eh I'm buying both games, Day One.

Given that I have no ability to play fps's with a controller (tried to play infamous with it recently and was as bad as expected) and that console games are far more expensive (where I live, due to taxes) tan pc games I will get this one for the pc. The move was making me want the ps3 version so bad!

The only game I see that has good move support is Zumba. Don't get me wrong guys (and gals) that controller tucked into that hip belt gives you a SERIOUS workout! Still waiting to be wow'd by the move though. This doesn't hurt Portal 2 AT ALL! It doesn't need move support!

@Animatronic64 As much as I love the PS3, I never believe that the PC version of any game is inferior. PC allows for user generated content/mods and upgradable hardware to continually enhance the experience. User mods potentially make a videogame a 10. Still dunno why ppl get games like Elder Scrolls and Fallout for consoles--they are missing out.

I am ok with no 3D and PS Move support even though they would make the game more fun. Getting a free PC game for the PS3 users makes the PS3 version the best.

I don't care, I just wish some third party Dev's would support the thing with some original titles, Sony thinks its okay to just slap it on its own 1st party games and then wonders why its not selling, if I don't need it to play a game why would I buy it.

That's really a shame being that Sony needs all the help they can get this gen...Unfortunatly I sold my ps3 w/ Move and have never been happier with just my 360 / Kinect and Wii.....
