No plans for single-player Tomb Raider DLC

Crystal Dynamics confirms all upcoming expansions for action-adventure game will be multiplayer-focused.

by

Gamers hoping for single-player Tomb Raider expansions are out of luck. Global brand director Karl Stewart explained on Reddit (via Videogamer) that all upcoming content for the action-adventure game will be multiplayer-focused.

"There are currently no plans in place for any single-player expansions," Stewart said. "All of our DLC is based around the multiplayer experience for now."

Tomb Raider this week added the $5 Caves and Cliffs pack. Included with the Xbox 360-exclusive expansion are three multiplayer maps: Scavenger Caverns, Cliff Shantytown, and Burning Village.

Released March 5, Tomb Raider won a positive critical reception and logged 1 million players in 48 hours. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

Right, because Square Enix has labeled Tomb Raider as a stinker. See their "Tomb Raider sells 3.4 million in four weeks, well below sales predicitons" statement. Square Enix is going to stick Crystal Dynamics with iOS games because Tomb Raider can't meet sales that require adequate fucking management from Square Enix. What a joke.

WHY?? I want a single player DLC because I am not in any way interested in playing multiplayer. :(

Well that's highly disappointing. I was really looking forward to getting the Classic Outfit in the form of DLC. I've played through the game once and would have again if it meant having a boss outfit. The three choices we're provided with suck balls.

For anyone who has the Tomb Raider Survival Edition, at least have downloadable tombs and 2 completed perks to start. For those who has only Tomb Raider, it is also nice but the downloadable """Tomb of the Lost Adventurer""" is is lost for those guys...

Anyways, since @JustArtificial suggested some interesting points regarding DLCs, maybe some clues from the game will provide some clues on what Crystal Dynamics is thinking.

1] The """Tomb of the Lost Adventurer""" is located at Coastal Forest, Part 2, on the entrance which was, before, an fake mine entrance. There are some fake mine entrances scattered along the game, which can be a good sign of their thinking of adding tombs in the future.

2] There are some place that are unreachable, but it is interesting to notice that those places have functions, just unreachable. Those can be continued by the devs once they made their minds with those.

3] Chapter Selection ala Assassin's Creed is a nice add-on functionality. But maybe next installment, and definitely TR will have another installment.

4] I thought that the Hitman weapons pack DLC is for the Single Player, but instead, to the Multiplayer. I suggest put that to SP, plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

5] Other places I saw on the map can be also used as additional exploration materials. Maybe use that for side missions, additional challenges, or anything else.

6] Costume add-ons are nice ones too!

7] Maybe another mission, such as """Rescued At Last"""! Lara and her company will be rescued finally, but the last of the Solarii will go fanatic and make a mad rush towards to the survivors. Of course, Lara must kill and survive, then after a couple of minutes, she must make her way to the rescue ship, with all the acrobatics and zip lines. Nice, isn't it?

Hopefully, just hopefully, they will hear us out, maybe through this:

Dear SquareEnix, Crystal Dynamics....

You made a powerful and impressive Tomb Raider reboot, and we all appreciate and recognize that great effort. We loved what you just accomplished, and for that, deep in my heart, thank you. Arigatou gozaimatsu!

We just wanted to help you have more ideas because we wanted to be involved to the masterpiece you done. That is how we show our sincere appreciation and recognition.

You made Lara Croft part again of our daily gaming lives. You deserve a standing ovation and praise.

Please consider all the comments here as a sign of enthusiasm and concern.

PLZZZZZZ!

Arigatou Gozaimasu!

Sincerely yours,

Peejay Arbado

Considering the fact that Tomb Raider is historically a single player game, the decision to focus solely on multiplayer with the DLC is both frustrating and disappointing. It was already frustrating enough not having any real unlockable content (besides the typical cop-out 'character models'.) The story of this new game is fairly linear, so re-playability is already rather low, and as far as I can tell, most people couldn't care less about the multiplayer -- a generic, albeit mildly interesting, add-on to the series. Where did the focus on Lara's survival story go?

Looks like this game is going to sit on my shelf for a while, or eventually be sold. Kind of a shame because its actually a good game. If there was dlc, new game +, unlockable weapons and outfits, it would be a good game to hold on to and play more than once or twice. But now I just have a linear single player game that I've seen 100% of, and multiplayer that I'm not interested in. What a shame.

no single player - no business from me.  Won't under any circumstances play multi player.  Hope enough of us refusing to buy their products  will hit the company in their pocket book

Well, no DLCrap for me then. Also, they can shove those microBS where the sun never shines!

What? I didn't expect any significant story-continuation from single-player DLC, but I was really looking forward to an epic tomb or something like that. I'm not much for multiplayer in general, so this is doubly disappointing.

Honestly though, this is why the PC version is better, because you can make your own mods and make Lara more sexy. Look at Skyrim, they don't even need a dlc, b/c players, up this day, are modding the nut out of it! HEED MY WORDS, TOMB RAIDER  NEEDS MORE SINGLE PLAYER DLC - SEXY TERA COSTUMES, WAYS TO VENTURE TO UNEXPLORED PARTS OF ISLANDS OR GOING TO NEIGHBORING ISLANDS, LONGER INTRICATE TOMBS, HARDER DIFFICULTY, MORE SPECIES OF ANIMALS, AND A NO HOLDS BARRED SURVIVAL MODE LIKE RE6!!

nayce54
nayce54

Just let us pay for sexy costumes and again I would like to see what the other crew members rooms on the ship look like. It would be nice to have a super hard mode with the wolves trained to attack by the islanders. Can you imagine the islanders sending wolves out of the cage to hunt you while molotov  cocktails are hurled at you? After you beat the game you can't fight the wolves and barely any people. WE REQUIRE CONTENT!! Give us Tress FX hair! We need content. Multiplayer needs a complete revamp. do that later.

Well, while most people I've seen aren't impressed with or even downright hate the multiplayer in this game, at least they didn't cut out any of the story to sell as dlc (I'm looking at you EA and Capcom). Honestly, if you don't play the multiplayer, who cares, they're not forcing you to buy it.

I like how AC3 is doing actual story based DLC. Do that!

The upcoming multiplayer DLC looks interesting ( IF )  "everyone" was interested ? multiplayer is just a short cut to thinking if you ask me , SP is where it's at and always will be !

I don't think I'll ever play a Tomb Raider game again since Crystal Dynamics screwed me over the second time with the DLC.

We all pay the same $60 for the game so I think it's unfair to people that don't play multiplayer. Why don't they just sell two versions of the game a cheaper one for single player fans.

Come single player has rights to. I am not going buy it ifs only multiplayer seems like now days in most games we have play online only.

I hate multiplayer DLC. Nobody else ever buys it so you're stuck there waiting for matches that will never happen.

AskanTale

That's good to hear that there's no dlc for single player mode because all these trend of single player DLC feels like they making gamers a fool..... want to play as the sidekick of main character? add 10 dollar! want an extra stage to play? add 10 dollar! down the road want to make the story longer since it's too short? add 20 dollar!

Feels like they making games incomplete to make gamers add extra bucks for DLC. but seeing Tomb Raider has no DLC for single player means it feels very complete.

Me and my co worker dont play single player anyway. After work we play online together kicking some ass. Too tired to play single player. We both full grown adult and pretty busy. When we are not busy we kick ass in multiplayer.

I am actually glad, better than cutting the story up into tiny little bits like the mass effect series (3 in particular)

That kinda sucks cause I really enjoyed the campaign, and have yet to touch the multiplayer.

Hang on, do you mean we actually have the full campaign on the disc, and we don't have to deal with tons of DLC crap? Now that's a rarity these days.

Mademan033

Some more tombs would be nice to explore, but DLC is overrated IMO. The only single player game I've played with "necessary" dlc would be Fallout 3, and even then it felt cheap to force players to buy DLC to continue playing. Any other DLC that is worth getting is for multi-player games, so it's no great loss in this instance. I'd rather have a great, complete experience than have to keep forking out to get the experience I could have had if DLC didn't exist, and Tomb Raider certainly delivered a great experience.

Scarshi

All Tomb Raider games up till now had no DLC. At least catering to multiplayer they are leaving the core game (mostly, so far) the hell alone.

I thought they said TR wouldn't have any DLCs...

And here is the reason I am sick of Single Player games having Multiplayer, most of the DLC goes to Multiplayer crap. I was already on the fence with this game, and now after this news the and $1 aim code I'm NEVER going to buy it.

Zzombielemur
Zzombielemur

Oh wow multiplayer DLC just what I always wanted to pay for!

Honestly who cares. Multiplayer DLC should be free. ME3 got that part right.

On the plus side them not offering SP DLC doesn't make me feel like I dropped 60$ for half a game.

Time for Tomb Raider to hit the pre-own section

Wow do game developers ever listen to the gamers' feedback? Who ever asked for more multiplayer DLC?

MysteryGoat

I couldn't care less about the multiplayer. In my mind, I bought a single player game because Tomb Raider IS a single player game. The good news about them telling us this, though, is that once I finish it I can just uninstall it off my computer knowing they're not going to release some extended levels or something like that down the line.

Fursnake

I'll guess I'll get down to business and rent this game finally.

Toysoldier34

What a huge mistake. People buy single player games for single player mode not the tacked on multiplayer. They would sell much more from single player content, but that would take more effort.

Zork_Wesker

Well that's disappointing, but I can't say that I didn't expect this. Seemed like the dumb thing to do. For every good decision there are two dumb ones in the gaming industry.

GROSS is the one word (yelling) I use to describe my feelings towards new expansion DLC being only focused on multi-player for Tomb Raider. I would love to give a little more money for some DLC for a game I loved as much as Tomb Raider if it were some single-player content. GROSS.

Vic6933
Vic6933

They will probably change their minds once they see only a small number of people buying the dlc.  I wasn't dlc content that would would extend the story of the single player but rather more tombs to raid, but rather longer more complex tombs preferably.  I wonder if they'll put up that Gamestop pre-order bonus the "challenge tomb" up as dlc?

MamoruNoHakkyou
MamoruNoHakkyou

I haven't tried the multiplayer option yet and plan to as soon as I finish story mode but for those that enjoy it, this is good. Otherwise, story DLC would be preferred like the Gold releases of the original games in the series on PC back in the day.

bignick217

Oh yeah, because that's why people buy Tomb Raider games.... For the Multiplayer! (Sarcasm)

@nayce54 I have the pc version and if what you told about mods are bs, I'm gonna kill your ass! Because I want more single player content, I don't give a shit about multi.

CodenameD52
CodenameD52

@AskanTale Agreed! These days you usually can't get the whole SP experience without paying extra bucks for content already packed in. I didn't buy TR yet, but just because it lacks SP DLC is enough reason for me to consider buying it.

As long as at least one version of retail is Steam free. (I'm play on PC)

@FlameBoyBen I'm surprised Square Enix chose not to rip us off in the single player department. At least yet.

@Dumper1 Yeah. It's full single player like good-ol'-days. Until someone at SE decides to get more greedy.

nayce54

@Toysoldier34 I agree with you, screw the multiplayer dlc, we need more content for the single player. It feels so empty having completed the game 100% only to be rewarded with nothing.

FlameBoyBen

@CodenameD52 @FlameBoyBen I guess they are a smaller publisher, more difficult to get away with it. perhaps they are still repairing the significant amount of damage the recent final fantasy games did

It really is up to debate

Also tomb raider was unusually good (it had a feel to it that felt different from uncharted)
