No new version of Elder Scrolls: Arena coming

[UPDATE] Bethesda confirms Australian rating a clerical mixup, no new version of the game coming

[UPDATE] After the publication of this story, a Bethesda representative confirmed that the rating was posted in error and that no new version of The Elder Scrolls: Arena is on the way.

"It should just say PC, not multiplatform," the representative said. "We've notified them and they're going to fix. There is no new version of the game coming. Just a clerical mixup."

The original story follows below

The Elder Scrolls: Arena has been rated by the Australian Classification Board.

The game was submitted on April 9 (via games.on.net), where it was listed as multi-platform and given an M rating on account of its "moderate violence."

Arena was the title of the first Elder Scrolls game, released back in 1994 for MS-DOS. The randomly-generated open-world RPG featured Skyrim and many of its cities as locations, including Dawnstar, Whiterun, and Falkreath.

The original PC version of The Elder Scrolls: Arena was released for free by Bethesda back in 2004.

Bethesda is currently working on MMO The Elder Scrolls Online for release in 2013. Twenty minutes of beta footage recently found its way online.

The one thing I miss from the original elder scrolls that the video reminded me of, was that in Arena you could create your own spells. These spells could have up to three effects and you had control over there damage, area of effect and duration. So you could have a fireball doing max damage with max blast radius three times. Thanks to the cheat mods of the time I would have enough magic to cast the spell but I would also end up killing myself when I cast the spell. Good times.

apon seeing the video for arena i actually remeber playing it and the others i think daggerfall had the worst dungeon i have ever travelled, when you entered there was a lock door in front of you , there was a left and right option as well the maze that insued going up and down level through 50 doors or more and countless monsters i finally get to the enemy i wad meant to kill for a quest a vampire i think, I killed him looted his body and chests surronding him and opened the last door in the dungeon, the locked one at the start of the maze, and my reaction was.....

would be interested in playing the games before Morrowind...I never got the chance...I'm sure they're a lot different

would be a good game to remake though

You know, sometimes I wonder if game companies let "mistakes" like this happen in order to test the waters and see how people react. I know I for one would love to see a TES: Arena HD (and a Daggerfall HD as well). Though given that both games are open source now... not likely, though I'm sure some amateur programmer could go and release an HD fan version. Though, on that matter, what I'd REALLY like to see is Morrowind going open source, as it was the best TES to date.

Great article; I was one of those geeks that started with Arena. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I'd have to say that Daggerfall was my favorite so far.

I would prefer a Oblivion re-release with the skyrim level system.

Daggerfall was my first Elder Scrolls game, still leaves me in awe to this day.  I never did try out Arena.

That woulda been cool...

I honestly wish they would just release the original games and the rest of the bethesda catalogue on gog.com. I think they would earn so much money from the id and elder scrolls catalogue alone.

I still own my old Daggerfall disc. Think I'm going to go download it and play it from Bethesda though so I don't mess up the disc. Love that game.

They also said werewolves wouldn't be in Skyrim...

C'mon Bethesda, quit stabbing me in the heart already. What a lousy day in the world of The Elder Scrolls...

They are some cool looking goblins in that picture. I wish they made the goblins look like that again.

I might play Arena one day. Daggerfall was fantastic, I highly recommend everyone find the .exe install version online for free and play it.

It's fun to jump into Arena, partially for the horrible artwork. The sprites are a mix of hand-drawn monsters and blocky computer-generated models converted to 2D sprites, and the animation is laughable. Then it's interesting to look at all the elements that were dropped, changed, or retconned in order to make one of the most compelling fantasy universes in modern fiction.

Remember these games from back in the day, I love Arena, but Redguard is fantastic.

OMG! Bethesda is not currently making The Elder Scrolls Online! ZeniMax is making  The Elder Scrolls Online. I swear if your going to post a article get your facts strait so I can trust your articles to be true.

I've only played Oblivion and Skyrim + a little bit of Morrowind but I'd love to play the old game just too see what they were like...

Oh my god, Morrowind was so awesome. I still got an original copy, expansions, map and all. I still think it's the best of all the Elderscroll games. I cant wait to revisit it spruced up in the upcoming MMO. Awww, excitement. :D

@uglypinkmoose NOOOOO they are VERRRRY VERY different, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim are similar but Arena and Daggerfall are totally different games, the controls suck bad which makes it amazingly hard. Im not saying its amazing hard ike its a challenge like Dark Souls, im saying its just bullshit. I mean if your a big time nostaglia freak i guess give it a try but other then that stick with morrowind oblivion and skyrim.

@sidzero But isn't Daggerfall ridiculously huge? Remaking all of that within any type of modern engine would take years, if not a decade, for a modder or a team of modders. That's the problem with many games these days. People complain that they're way smaller than the low res games from 15-20 years ago and they might very well be correct. It might not be desirable (from a company viewpoint) or even possible to remake an old megahuge game with modern graphics.

Right there with you, I hate messing with DOSBox and if I can get these games running without it that would be a good thing.

@Bowser05

The free version by Bethesda is the floppy one. It doesn't have voice over or improved controls. If you have the disc , go for the disc version. It's a lot better.

@Taegre

too bad laughable animation wasn't dropped changed or retconned in subsequent entries.

But you're right, - didn't they even come up with some lore to explain why the world is so much smaller in TES III-V?

@vadagar1

DaggerXL is where you should be looking at. A new engine specifically used to run a few older games including Daggerfall, which will be modable.

sidzero

@Hurvl Not a complete remake, an HD version. A complete remake would involve a new 3D engine, rebuilding the world and assets and what not. An HD version would simply be updating the existing engine into one that can run on modern PCs (and maybe consoles), and new hi-res sprites. It would be the classic game, but playable without jumping through hoops, and with better graphics.

@pongley @JoInfo

Its not hard to get it to run with DosBox, it is a slightly bit more of a pain than most other old dos games though as it was quite a high end game back in the days of dos, just go to the Elder Scrolls wiki pages there's an article on there giving step by step instructions.

I've got Daggerfall running on my Samsung Galaxy 3, not very playable on a touch screen mind you :)

@pongley Oh ok, I wasn't sure of all the in's and out's of it.

@Master_cheat001 @Torquille @Poidad @game_more Yes, and Zenimax Online Studios was created by Zenimax directly. Bethesda may also mean two different things: Bethesda Softworks, publisher, and Bethesda Game Studios, owned by Bethesda Softworks, which is the studio behind Fallout 3 and the single player Elder Scrolls series.
