No new EA Star Wars game until after March 2014

Electronic Arts says first games from DICE and Visceral not expected for more than a year.

by

Gamers excited about the new Star Wars games from Battlefield studio DICE and Dead Space developer Visceral Games may want to get comfortable.

During a post-earnings financial call today, Electronic Arts chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen said the firm will not publish any new Star Wars games during the company's fiscal 2014, which runs April 1, 2013 through March 31, 2014.

EA yesterday announced a deal with The Walt Disney Company that will make EA the exclusive developer of "core" Star Wars games. These games will be delivered on "all interactive platforms" and will run on the Frostbite 3 game engine.

No story or gameplay details about any of the new Star Wars projects have been divulged thus far.

Though there will not be any new Star Wars games in fiscal 2014, EA said today that it will release 11 major titles in the year (compared to 13 last year) and 15 mobile titles for iOS and Android. These were not specified.

Ill be the first Star Wars fan to say that the news that Disney got Star Wars was something worth skepticism in the first place. Not because they cant make good movies, Disney can do that well. It is the videogame contributions I was concerned about. Lucas Arts had a spotty record at best and Disney, has either been non existent in it since the Super Nintendo, or so mediocre they simply are not worth much mention.

So, let me give you a tip Disney, that is if you at all want to maintain the Star Wars brand at all, take the Exclusive Developer Deal from EA so fast it will make their greedy heads spin. They do not respect their IP's and see their customers as sheep to fleece over and over until they bleed.

Yes, they have acquired a great bunch of innovative developers. but it is sort of expecting a athlete to be at his best, when he has a tick the size of a small rabbit on his chest and he is just happy the thing doesn't pop and kill him in the process. No matter the effect it has on his performance.

They will give you games, but each will be as forgettable, (if not just outright bad,) as the last. People still hold great memories of games like Rogue Squadron, Republic Commandos, SWTOR, Tie Fighter and X-Wing fighter, Battlefront 1-2, and Empire at War. I would be downright flabbergasted if EA was able to do anything like any of the games above. Oh and yes, that is considering that EA has acquired Bioware, the maker of one of the games on this list.

That's not even mentioning Exclusive Developer deals inspire laziness. After all, there is no competition to have a better game idea. Allowing EA to pump out uninspired, insipid junk which they are rather used to doing anyway, and force anyone else with a good idea to simply shrug their shoulders and move on.

EA will not make your dreams come true, give up hope for 1313,KOTOR, or Battlefront 3,it is not going to happen. EA was voted worst company in america 2x for a reason,EA has made it clear that they will make microtransaction available in all of their games,EA 's plan for the future is making games for ios and f2p..what we all saw happen with simcity will happen with all future star war games, always online DRM with crap load of DLC.

Well, at least EA aren't rushing the games out there. That's slightly comforting at least.

Good news ppl, Star Wars games will now be as fucking bad as Star Trek games. Note there are those few exceptions.

Minor note: spell check let me know I forgot the "k" in "fucking"... who knew?

Oh and Eddie, thanks again for teaching me about copy&paste.

Kinda surprises me that this is even newsworthy...i guess the next in series for gamespot is:

"Sony and Microsoft announce games in the future, not the distant future, but not tomorrow either. They gave us release dates, but this is an industry where release dates are practically meaningless. Maybe its a new GOW game. Maybe a HALO. i dunno. pass the cheetos and a lighter."

i sure hope they dont even come out with one in the next year.  they barely signed on.  they need more then a year to develop a 'core' star wars game.  if one comes out in the first half of 2014 im gonna be outright pissed.  if one even comes out in 2014 at all im gonna be a little leery.

A new Jedi Knight game would make it worth the wait. And get Bioware to do a new kotor. Take your time on them and release decent games without micro-transactions and you'll go a long way to rebuilding your image with gamers.

In reading everyone's responses, I am reminded of a scene in Episode 3 when Chancellor Palpatine officially declares the reorganization of the Galactic Republic into the Empire. Padme says, "So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause". That's how I feel about this. Star Wars has just been handed over to the greediest, most unethical publisher in the industry (and it doesn't matter who develops the games because in the end EA has the final say) and everyone claps their hands and begs, literally begs, them to release a game. The sickest part of it all is how quick everyone is to forget all of EA's past transgressions as if they never happened. EA wins again...

there are only two things i want from you: a kotor 3 based about 3000 years AFTER Darth Krayt, and a God of War-esque game based upon the Darth Bane trilogy

Sigh. Since EA doesn't seem to like to take chances I doubt they'll ever release another SW flight simulator...

But then again, if Star Citizen if a success... maybe they'll react. I just hope it's a true space simulator like X-Wing was, not some arcade or rail shooter.

I bet DICE is going to make a Battlefront 3. This EA thing may not be so bad after all. I haven't played a good Star Wars game in a while anyway.

I just read "These games will be delivered on "all interactive platforms"" and had the feeling they were already headed into ruining Star Wars game. Fuck EA.

What really? they won't be able to push out a game within 11 months of starting? I'm shocked. Didn't the longest game in development only take 13 months or so? That they would fail to get a game out immediately is big news. NEWS I SAY.

I wasn't expecting any new Star Wars games to come out anytime soon, since Disney recently closed Lucasarts and EA just acquired the license. They should take their time to perfect these games and give us lots of content (our money's worth) before releasing the inevitable DLC packs. Honestly, I don't mind DLC as long as it's worth the money. At least EA isn't known for putting DLC on the disc and making us pay for said content that's already on the disc, like Capcom... at least I've never heard of them doing that.

WTB new space combat sim.  Chris Roberts is making a spiritual successor to Wing Commander, and it's a perfect time for an XWing/Tie Fighter update.

I just wanted a well made story for KOTOR 3. And maybe decent remakes of the KOTOR1 and KOTOR2 games. But they could give the main character of those old games a standart face, background and so on... not customizable only... this should be an option.

Dear EA,

Acquire Star Wars 1313 and finish that game, please.

Sincerely,
me.

Yes the demand is still there, for the right games. KoTOR 3. Battlefront 3, Jedi Knight 3, Republic Commando 2, Star Wars Space Sim, etc

a little disappointing, but they need time to make a quality game. At least I hope that's what will happen, is that asking too much?

Of course i'll take time, after all they have to figure out a way to explain why The Force will be a $19.99 DLC in all the games.

Alas.

Just imagine a star wars battlefront game running on the latest iteration of the frostbite engine. Now that's a game I would buy the day it is release.

DICE and Visceral. Winning. Too bad they are attached to the likes of EA and Disney. But I suppose they wouldn't be working on Star Wars titles at all were it not for them. You win some, you lose some.

Right now I just want DICE to concentrate on that fantastic looking Battlefield 4 game for next gen.

People may disagree with me, but I think DICE is the perfect pick for a new Battlefront III and I think it would be awesome if a portion of Visceral were to help the LucasArts team finish Star Wars 1313! (This will never happen).

I heard rumors EA was breaking Visceral up after DS3, glad to see that's not the case.

Hope they make a kick-arse Star Wars game!

@racerxgundam It's like the guy from Square Enix during the Sony presentation: "I have a big announcement...we have a Final Fantasy game coming...eventually...thank you"

Crystal_McGhee

@dillon-peters The could have gotten 1313 and what was made of Battlefront 3. Which would make sense as to why two games would be pretty much ready to go.

@Aengelus While i agree with you, to be honest EA isn't the worst, just the most gaudy of the bunch. The truth is all publishers and developers are A-holes, even the ones that peeps think are cool.

The ONLY maybe exceptions to that on the console side of things is atlus and rockstar.

In pc gaming...they are alot cooler and friendlier, but you have to be when you release UNFINISHED GARBAGE, and almost never fulfill promises or features.

RedLegZeff
RedLegZeff

@J_Dangerously I'm right here with you. I would LOVE that. Well, don't think that's up EA's alley at all, so little chance, and even less chance of it being good. But there's always hope. They didn't think luke could hit the exhaust vent with a torpedo either. Course he had the force....EA just has shady business practices and lack of credibility.

@gaming_paradox It's a shame the game will require Origin.

Adavanter

That might be the fairest way to look at it. I've taken the news badly... but I do respect DICE and Visceral. I just fear EA will drive their work into the dirt.

NeoNewJocosity
NeoNewJocosity

@Thegamer16 That wasn't really a rumor, so much as a misunderstanding. Visceral Games is a multinational developer with multiple studios like Ubisoft, and Visceral Montreal was closed down. Visceral Montreal was working on a whole lot of nothing as far as the gaming public is aware, though.

@Adavanter

The just got the rights the other day? How is one year later not rushed? Poop out a game in 6 months? Lmao.

If a game comes out in 2014 it will be rushed..

@Adavanter It's May 2013.  If they're shoving a game out in March 2014 you bet your ass it's rushed.

@TrueGB yes, but nevertheless it would be astonishing to see the improvements that could be made, since the last time I saw battlefront on ps2 to ps4. don't you think?
