No more console gaming peripherals from Logitech

In cost-cutting initiative, technology company plans to discontinue "non-strategic" products, including console peripherals by end of 2013; PC gaming peripherals will continue to be sold.

Some of Logitech's gaming peripherals will soon be collectors' items. In an effort to cut costs, the company said this week that console gaming peripherals no longer fit with its strategic direction.

"As a result, we have initiated the process to divest our remote controls and digital video security categories, and we plan to discontinue other non-strategic products, such as speaker docks and console gaming peripherals, by the end of Calendar Year 2013," the company said.

Logitech total sales for its latest quarter hit $615 million, down 14 percent from the $715 last year. The company posted a $195 million net loss for the quarter, compared to a profit of $55 million during the same period last year.

Logitech's current gaming peripheral lineup includes various mice and keyboards, wheels, headsets, joysticks, gamepads, and accessories.

A company representative confirmed with GameSpot today that all PC gaming mice, keyboards, and headsets will continue to be sold and are in fact a "key focus for the company."

Well, they still make the best PC mice and keyboards.  In fact, thats all I have ever purchased except for my Filco mechanical keyboard for my gaming machine.  Their unifying wireless keyboards and mice are some of the best I have purchased.

I have a G9x, 3x M570 wireless trackballs, and 3x K360 wireless keyboards for my systems.  I also have a really great 2.1 speaker system from them as well.  Had a great headphone set for my gaming system as well, until the cat cut the wire trying to get my attention.

Just keep making the G25/G27 and I'll be good.

i think they are doing this because next gen consoles are about to come out.

maybe once the new gen consoles have come out they might start selling them again

I wonder if this is as wise move, considering that next-gen consoles are right around the corner...

This is pretty ironic. Not enough dough in the consoles for the peripheral makers, hah!

Oh well, I'm sure they'll keep cranking out PC goodies.

what does this mean to logitech steering wheels?

Microsoft with holding wireless controller licenses from third partys have devastated Logitech, well there is always the next generation coming out - hope for the best for logitech.

Sadly for consumers without cheap third part peripherals, console makers are able to keep their price for controllers histrionically elevated. With markups in the 60+ % range 8 years after their releases.

Can't believe there's not a PC-or-Console controller already. There's already hundreds of adapters out there, even cross-console adapters in case you want to use your 360 controller on your PS3, or vice-versa. Can't imagine it would be so difficult to implement this into the controller itself.

They make great products, if only they could make them more affordable they wouldn't have to cut it from their products list.  I own the G510 keyboard, and the G9x mouse.  Solid additions for my PC.

Hope they change the software for my harmony remote to be offline only then, otherwise I lose the ability to reprogram it. :(

looks like my two spare logitech driving force GT racing wheels may be appreciating in price in the near future, especially with the inevitable launch of GT6 on the PS4.

This isn't as much of an issue as long as the software makers program their games to support the peripherals. Polyphony patched GT5 a few times to support more and more PC wheels.

To be honest they kinda faltered in their console offering this generation. In the PS2 era I absolutely LOVED my wireless Logitech PS2 controller, it was miles better than the official one, but for the PS3 Logitech's offering was very poor. This is making me consider buying one of their racing wheels though before they become a rarity, the quality of those are top notch (as are their mice, keyboards, speakers etc)

Problem with them going to the xbox and the ps3..There where very few racing games..Sure you have people who love gta5 and forza..Not much after that..There space games for the pc being made these days..You have more racing options for the pc i think..

I trust Logitech a lot, they got top notch quality.
Razer is cool too, especially their design, but as for the quality..not that great.
I remember my Diamondback 3G lasted only for a year or so. Squeaky left button, and then I just couldn't press it to click something.

Forgot to mention how much I love my Logitech G13, wouldn't know what to do without it! Hope they keep on making it, because when/if this one breaks (been absolutely problem free since 2010), I'm buying a replacement the very same day.

In past I've purchased many Razer items, including

1 deathadder

1 naga (2011)

2 mamba (one back in 2009, one back in 2011)

1 black widow keyboard ultimate

all of those periphials, with an exception of the black widow keyboard, BROKE WITHIN 6 months of purchase. (The old mamba from back in 2009 actually started jittering a month after the purchase.)

The keyboard is great, but quality of the Razer mouse is just plain HORRIBLE.

I'd love a new PC gamepad from Logitech perhaps with better wifi, buttons, D-pads, and maybe in Wii U pro controller lay out.

Long ago I realized two import rules: 1. Do not buy tech made specifically for children. Even off brand adult tech will work much better then that. It happened with cameras, tablets, and televisions (to name a few). The standard is set too low. 2. Most accessory tech for consoles suck. Maybe because there was not enough competition, since you have to use connectors unique to that console. Or maybe they considered it a kid-like item.

By and large since Razer picked up the quality in their Mice and Keyboards I haven't bought a logitech mouse/keyboard for a while. However I DO tend to stick with Logitech when it comes to flight sticks and my headphones, so hopefully cutting the low volume console stuff will give them the chance to put more money into those.

the problem i have with all logitech mice is that their middle click is stiff.  they need to make their middle clicks easy and comfortable to press like the CM xornet mouse.

As awesome as Logitech is in terms of an unbeatable price / quality balance, I didn't even know they make console peripherals at all o.o Always thought they're PC Only, so, no big deal for me as long as PC keeps getting support :)

I have a logitech racing wheel, and while it works, it's not really the best designed or built. Other than that, I don't have any logitech accessories for any of my three consoles. So if I am typical of the market, this is probably a wise choice on their part. For my PC gear, I always prefer Logitech keyboard and mice over a lot of others. Have done so since the early '90s. They make good stuff.

Glad to hear they're still going to support PC peripherals, the G13 is one of my favorite gaming devices.

Not sure I am buying into the talk of Logitech being worse than Razer. My Razer headset which set me back £120 had power issues that were never resolved. My friends Razer mice always fade in terms of asthetics with the rubbery surface wearing away fairly quickly.

I have always found logitech stuff to be rather tank like. However I have gone through 2 logitech mice in under 10 years which both went with a blink of an eye and without any really warnings. So maybe not is all well with logitech. Perhaps corsair can fill that void of high quality components. My 800D case has served me well for the past 3 years aside from the hotswap bays having connection issues :P

Logitech's quality -is- slipping I think.  I had a mouse from them that died after 2 and a half years of use.  Yeah, that's not awful, but I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse 3.0 that I've had for something like 7 or 8 years and it still works absolutely perfectly.  I don't know how ANYONE can be successful in the 3rd party console peripheral market unless they're the super cheapo alternative and not an equal or more expensive alternative.  The market is too narrow for anything other than the cheapo alternative.

Meh, the quality of Logitech's products have taken a steep dive in recent years. They used to be THE NAME in quality peripherals but now days I can already tell that they've been cutting costs even before this big announcement.

Tekcor

Uh-oh, cost cutting. That always affects more than they say.

I had a Logitech G5 mouse for about 5 years before the cable started getting flaky on me. My friends have burned through 4 of the newer model, the G500 in about a year each. Logitech quality is already slipping, and they need to cut more costs? Heck, their best selling joystick STILL requires a version of their Logitech Gaming Software that is 3 versions out of date. This is trouble.

My new mouse is a Razer Mamba, and it looks like I made the right choice switching teams.

Shame. Logitech was actually one of the only companies I would trust to buy anything from peripheral wise. I don't use them personally but Nyko, Madcats, etc. They make decent stuff at low prices but they always have something that feels cheap. Logitech always stayed constant, to me anyway, at making things meant to last.

As long as they're still producing for the PC...I'm really neutral.

The only thing we'll all (presuming it comes out for consoles too)  need a good flightstick for that is coming up is Star Citizen...and that's a bit away.

I think it's a smart move.. Their best products have always been their mice and keyboards.. Might as well put the resources where they are strongest.

Some of their stuff was too expensive and the quality was just average for game consoles. If they had made the quality better for the console products, they would have sold more. Logitech isn't needed when Razer, Nyko and Madcatz are still around. I miss Nuby though. I used to get everything from them for free when I worked in the gaming busy. Great company. I think I do have the Logitech wheel for my Xbox 360. I have yet to use it though. I need to pull that thing out of the box. lol!!
