No Halo director chosen yet

Peter Jackson tells Dark Horizons that he hasn't chosen a filmmaker to help adapt the popular shooter.

by

Late last week, the Web was afire with rumors that Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy) would direct the film adaptation of Halo, the wildly popular Xbox and PC shooter. The choice seemed very plausible, given del Toro's visual flair and the fact his career path mirrored that of the project's executive producer, Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson.

However, now word has emerged that del Toro has not been selected--from Jackson himself. Speaking to the popular film site Dark Horizons, Jackson flatly said that no one has been chosen to direct Halo. "We're talking to some people but we're going to be shooting that next year," he said. The film is set for a summer 2007 release.

Jackson also told Dark Horizons that he turned down the director's chair because he needed some time off, but his love of the game still made him want to be involved in the project. "I want to have the fun but not the hard work. I just want to be part of the creative team but not actually have the pain," he joked. "Hopefully it won't suck."

Jackson would do an awesome job doing the Halo movie, after seeing the translation of Lord of the Rings we can expect decent work from him in the future! :D

Still think they would've been better off doing everything digital. Get the guys who did final fantasy: spirits within and put them under Peter. Then have the same voice actors. It'd save time and money! As for who will direct? George Lucas can do it. I know we all have mixed feelings, but if he is controlled. . . if his raw talent is harnessed. . . he can and will create a magnificent creation. Spielburg, Lucas. . . Woo (Come on, who wouldn't think it'd be awesome to see doves fly by Master Chief. . . for no reason. .). . . I don't know.

The Halo movie will be coming out, Anyways, I was so dissapointed in the BloodRayne trailer IT SUCKED! it's just another Underworld/Ziena Warrior Princess piss take with lesbiants that's all it is! it's pathetic.

Yes Peter, hopefully it won't suck.

With Jackson producing and Weta Workshop/Weta Digital doing the effects, I think the Halo movie is in pretty good hands already, and it's going to take a pretty horrible writer/director/cast to make this movie stink. Picking a director from the top shelf would be excellent, of course. Like Spielberg. Imagine the posters: "From the people that brought you The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Minority Report, War of the Worlds and Bad Taste!" Might need to print extra large posters to fit all that in, but it would look damn cool, I tell ya.

I'll just say this: (This means I'm going to write a lot of useless funk) Uwe Boll has directed expensive, theoretically high profile releases that lost money. Every element of those projects he contributed to could be considered a core part of those failures. Microsoft isn't going to let a guy who loses money touch their property. That's like leaving a bag of flour with a junkie who's so strung out he'll shoot anything... They've already got the involvement of the now very high profile Peter Jackson (who did direct some excellent films before the Lord of the Rings trilogy) in some capacity. Even if Guillermo del Toro doesn't direct, there are enough sort of avant-garde type guys with enough appreciation for the finer virtues of the Sci-Fi genre, HALO itself and the audience's expectations in general to be able to give it a good treatment, like Rodriguez and Tarantino (though Tarantino's more of a film guy, he was a huge fan of Z Channel when it was on, and Kill Bill is almost a satire of videogame violence) and anyone but the other masthead figure of bad VG cinema: Paul WS Anderson...Not to be confused with Paul Thomas Anderson, who's only directed excellent movies. What was my point???Oh yes, no Boll, no sale, not with Microsoft...

Ridley Scott or Michael Mann. Mann can set the scene and stage action scenes as good as anyone else. With Peter Jackson providing insight on the elements of the special effects and sort of "fantasy" portions of the movie I believe Ridley Scott would be a great choice to film all the action that would be found in the movie. I am really excited about this movie. it sounds like Microsoft, Bungie, and Peter Jackson all want this project to turn out great. Can't wait to hear more.

He should either be committed or not. Anybody that is involved in a Halo project should be willing to work hard and be ready to feel the pain. If Jackson puts his mind, dody, and soul into the Halo movie project, it could turn out to be the first movie inspired from a video game that wins an Oscar.

hmmmmm yeah all really good ideas.ridley scott or chris nolan sound good, but chris nolan is making some movie and then doing the next batman.what about robert rodriguez,he did an amazing job translating Sin City to the big screen, imagine what he'd do for halo.

peter jackson is basicly supervising the movie while doing side stuff to make it great, peter jackson will not let this movie suck. as for a director peter jackson has one in mind and if they dont find one that shares his halo vision, they will proly delay is a year back so jackson can direct [hopefully].

George Lucas - God No! I'd almost rather see Ewe Boll direct. At least deep down Ewe knows he can't direct.

Man, if this movie sucks, there should be a law against video game, film adaptations.

I have faith that the movie will turn out okay, simply because Microsoft is demanding creative control and closely monitoring the progress of the movie every step of the way. Microsoft knows that the Xbox line lives and dies on top-tier franchises like Halo, and it's not willing to see its cash cow eviscerated by hacks at the bottom of the Hollywood food chain.

Hmm I didnt like HellBoy at all but I cant deny Del Toro's ability to direct and with Jackson as the exec producer I cant see this sucking unless something really bad happens.

It would be pretty coo if Del Toro directed the movie cause he did a good job directing Blade 2 and sub-par job on Hellboy. I wouldn't mind if he did. But i doubt all those big time directors like Ridley Scott or James Cameron would direct it.

I think Wes Anderson would be the best choice for director. Bill Murray as Master Chief, anyone?

I agree with Poltergeist13. Ridley Scott should direct it. He is a visionary director and since he did Blade Runner and Blackhawk Down. I can envision Halo movie being a cross between those two movies.

Ridley Scott would be a great choice, but the BEST choice would be Steven Spielberg... although I doubt it would happen.

I know this sounds weird but I think perhaps Batman Begins director Christopher Nolan should direct Halo. Oh and about that comment jordanroher made about Bloodrayne( Kristanna Lokan I that's her name), the actress is over 6' ft. tall, I guess that's why you think she looks like a man.

Theman3788

Peter is the King! Halo should be amazing. He's got an eye for special talent. He hired Orlando Bloom 2 days after he graduated from acting school. He'll find someone, and when he does, he'll rock

Maybe it IS a man dressed like a woman.... Anyway I never have high hopes for good or even great game to movie films.

My fingers are crossed. Here's our last chance for a decent game-to-movie translation... and in other news, has anyone seen those ads for the BloodRayne movie in the back of OPM and EGM? Is it just me, or does the woman playing BloodRayne look like a man?

Hopefully if Peter Jackson stays true to form, he will put out a movie that remains faithful to its source material. Cross your fingers for a capable director!

It would have been great if Jackson had decided to direct this himself -- and it sounds like that option wasn't too far off the path. Fingers crossed for a Jackson-directed film adaptation of Beyond Good and Evil.
