No Final Fantasy VII remake until Square Enix tops original

Square Enix CEO says RPG series would be done for if a remake were made now; company first needs to make a game that beats FFVII in terms of quality, sales.

by

Don't expect a Final Fantasy VII remake until Square Enix can make a new installment in the role-playing game franchise that tops the company's landmark original PlayStation effort.

Fans will have to keep waiting for a remake of Cloud's escapades.

In a Q&A session of Square Enix's annual shareholder's briefing, CEO Yoichi Wada said that a remake of Final Fantasy VII will happen once the company makes a new Final Fantasy title that succeeds the seventh game in terms of quality and sales, something the company has to date failed to do.

If Square Enix were to release a remake right now, Wada said that the series would be done for. He also said that staff members assigned to the supposed project would have to be fully committed to it if it were in the pipeline.

Final Fantasy VII was an immediate critical and commercial success upon its release; the game sold 10 million copies worldwide as of May 2010. The original is currently available for download on the PlayStation Network, and a Steam rerelease has been rumored.

myself and many of my friends grew up playing final fantasy and still love the earlier ones to this day mainly ff7 but also enjoyed ff8 ff9 and f10 (only downfall of ff10 was not being able to explore the map and fight). i  have not bought a final fantasy game since ff10 because they have ruined it with the and that goes for everyone i know that used to love the games, and i know for a fact that if they remade ff7 i would 100 percent buy it and lots of people i know would. surely thats the way to go if you want to top sales not just make another shit game and hope people buy it? then go on and make something similar once they realise what the people want? i dont think they pay attention to what the fans want as nothing changes no matter how much everyone rants. big shame can only hope. peace

SE can't get a new FF game to top it, because they spend all their time on top notch graphics, soundtracks, and cinematics.

What FF needs is a unique, deep, original story.  Innovative (new) combat system.  Intuitive Upgrade System (Like materia was in FF7), and tons and tons of side content.

Graphics are on a whole new level today, cutscenes really have no place except for story telling.  Cinematic (mini movie) cut scenes are also out of place in today's games.

I'd like to see an FF game that's not so linear in progression.

Imagine a game with a story with the same elements of FFVII.  A vigilante group like Avalanche and a controlling government like shinra.

Now imagine if you could chose to play it through as Sephiroth, Aerith, or Cloud.  And what if you decided to play cloud, but rejoined Shinra instead and betrayed Avalanche, and fought to make sure the meteor was successful at the end etc.

SE needs to do stuff like that.  Every FF game they make is set on a hard coded story where you basically just play through a movie.  And if the story/movie isn't utterly superb, then the only thing that keeps people interested is good gameplay/fun combat/side quests/etc etc.  But most the FF games lack in that department.

I'd like to see an FF game that plays more like Skyrim, Dragon Age, Oblivion, etc.

And SE can do it, they've done it in FFXI and FFXIV 1.0 and 2.0.  But their MMO's with subscription fees, and they have their flaws.

But Content Wise, FFXI has more content than any game I've ever seen, it's exasperating, almost unfathomable.

And why did it sell 10 Mil? Because FF went from 2D to 3D, also from a Nintendo exclusive to a Sony exclusive. Also partly due to Sony's falling out with Nintendo. Playstation came from a failed attempt at a CD add on for SNES.

Topping FF7 ain't happenin'! That's the reason they've milked that game with so many spin-off games. After FF6 they peaked in terms of storytelling with FF7. Once they realize they're asking for the moon, they'll do the FF7 remake.

Just give back the world map exploration  i'm more of a explorer type than a jump from one place to the next. I really love FF 7 because of its story  and characters i played ff series up to FF 12 (still trying to save enough for a PS 3 T_T) and i still think that FF 7 is the best it just makes you want to know more about the characters . for the remake of FF 7 i really want it to happen. they could add some more side mission or additional character missions.

FF 8 was amazing! However the music was crazy repetitive and a little flakey with the exception of the main theme. However the story tops almost all others... Now that's not to say I dislike installments after that, but in a frenzy to try to match ff7 they repeated to try adding new features and gameplay adding motion controls, trying to redefine the RPG genre. In doing so they only over-complicated everything. All is needed is a throwback. Simplicity is key, after all that's how u make catchy. All u need is a good foundation. Quality story, characters, and never underestimate the music. That's one of the greatest hooks of ff7, people tend to not realize that since it is so seamless.

I love Final Fantasy VII. I'm gonna go ahead and say that now. But I'm not shooting down every Final Fantasy that came after that. And that's what all of VII fanboys/girls seem to do! I hate that! It hurts me to see one of my all time favorite series dying... and not for a lack of effort on their part. Final Fantasy VII, IX, X, X-2, XII, XIII and XIII-2 were all good, if not great games! (Ok, maybe XIII wasn't great...lol) But what I'm saying in a nutshell is, before you kill them off, at least give them the courtesy of looking at what they have to offer...without a VII bias to blind you.

A remake is okay but I really think they should just stop making anymore sequels/prequels and animated films to do with FFVII. There is already too much attached with FF7.  Although I would prefer it if they did not make a remake at all and moved on from FFVII by focusing on new, improved projects.

koim

the thing is... they're right. unless they come up with something that breathes quality back into the series, the release of a FFVII remake would be the end of the series (not that it isn't already done for).

It would be the last nail in the coffin of something that's steadily been going downhill since VII's release.

If they aren't willing/able to make final fantasy GREAT games anew, then please let the franchise die a beautiful death.

I think that was just Square Enix's way of saying that there will never be a remake of FF7. They're never going to top the success of FF7 in a million years. SE, what will doom the series isn't a FF7 remake...it's the lackluster FF games you've been releasing lately. I think the only other game that could maybe match, if not top, the success of FF7 is a remake of FF6.

So, stop hoping for a FF7 remake, they've basically said it's not going to happen.

lol, better then FF7 - then skip shit like lighting returns (even if its not so bad - thats not the way to go if they want something better then FF7 - it should be relative easy - start making a great JRPG without thinking about stupid xbox gamers which brains may explode when they play something compareable to the story, the setting, the chars and everything that made FF7 one of the best rpgs of all time.

All squareenix games are not as great as the squaresoft games - while the enix games were great too - but together they never reached one of their gems from the 90s.

Maybe FF-15 will turn out as great action rpg - a lot players waited for it till the first trailer, the setting looked mcuh more interesting then the other FF games like 13 which just was pretty nice done in all aspects, except one - its no FF Game, not a real game at all - its just like a movie with the most stupid elements to play - nothing to discover, bad sidequest - while it could be so much better if they simply romoved the "casual" effects and would try to tell a great story like 7 - the story wasnt really bad too, but it was to much in teh background, while the chars only talked about their lame feelings - who cares - but i still believe FF15 could be a great game - but as its also for xbox one, i moe belive it wont - i just thought they only release 13 on xbox too, as they released how bad the game is, and that they need to go multiplatform to sell "enough" - and yea, isn't it so? the game didnt sold very well - in the years after FF7&8 i was just waiting and waitng for a game that is as great as these - played 10, 12, 13 - compared to 7&8 just ok jrpgs but nothing i would have played without the name Final Fantasy. 10 was quite good, 12 was ok, 13 was nah - and since 13 i havent played another FF Game - which would be only 13-2, but i dont care anymore, i hope 15 will be good, but really something better then 7 is just a dream - the management of sqaure enix doesnt seem able to to go on with non casual games - just like most games today turn out more and more casual like, playbale for everyone, boring for those who love it.

I dont know how much sqaure have destroyd of the deus ex franchise, as its made by eidos montreal, but with this game its just like , oh square enix - maybe i shouldn't buy or even play it as it have a nearly 100% chance of being really bad.

Tomb Raider was a good game anyway - so it might be more eidos montreal that destroyed deus ex - i cant understand the ratings - ist the bad this game - sooooooooooooooooooooooo bad. played an hour and felt like by nerves try to kill me as may body and brain simply couldn't accept that this should be deus ex ... play donkey kong country for the snes, play donkey kong country returns, play metroid for snes, play metroid prime - look at the studio. both made by retro games - they REALLY know about gaming - nintendo could be happy to have the best studio in the world - i would really like to see a deus ex game from them - but another DKC will do it too :-)

haha square- you will never make a game better than FF7 you fools! Unless it's FF7 remake, simple boom bam badabing badaboom SHAWEEEEEENG batta batta. It's like this; PS4 gfx, real time combat, action rpg with a fully traversable world (imagine exploring midgar as if it were Skyrim?) THIS IS AN EXAMPLE I'm not saying make FF7:ES but think of the possibilities.

maybe you should start making good games again Square enix. Go back to the game style from Final Fantasy 1-9 And leave the linear path shit from 10 and 12. Even Though 10 was still good.

Give us a World map and classic round based battles where u actually control your characters. Entering a town on a map was so much nicer than selecting something from a menu.

Whether people love it or hate it, FF7 'is' the most 'popular' game in the series.  But, I believe, from what I've read over the years, that people don't just miss this particular 'game'.  They miss the 'game-design'.  The way the worlds were built from FF1-FF9.  I understand these people because, I feel the same way.  The games have gone from "Adventure/RPG" to "Action/Adventure with some RPG elements".  This isn't a "rant".  Just a simple observation.

I think this is really sad. If they really won't remake Final Fantasy 7 until they make a game that tops it, then I won't even hold my breath! None of the games have had the impact or been as fun as 7 since (although 9 was somewhat close (it was just too easy)). I find it a bit of a head scratcher that they think their Final Fantasy series would be abandoned after making a remake of 7. Although it hasn't been that great for a while the series is still pretty popular. BTW, I liked 3, 7, 9 and 12 in the main series. 10 was OK but I didn't play it a lot.

If Square Enix wants an FF game to beat FFVII, they'll need to leave what they thought was a good idea at their follow-ups. Bring back the world map, focus much less on the lenght and number of video's. (not saying forget about them) And last but not least, bring solid theme songs back to each and every character.

FFVII was perfect because it wasn't!
FFX+ ain't even close to FFVII because they try too hard to be perfect. (even 8 and 9 went stray)

It's pure psychological thinking. Players loved FFVII because each character, themesong and location made you  fill in the pieces by yourself, simply because nothing was perfect! It was actually closer to reading a book.
Even the character equipment and evolvement system was cute, fun and not perfect.

New age FF's don't leave anything to the imagination. A player wont starve and will grow bored before they even begin. No matter how good the story is.. No matter how good the graphics are.. The music.. The actors.. It's the wrong focus!

So, am i saying that it's too late to make a new FF game as popular as FFVII, or even better? The answer is; - "No! Not even by far!"  Gather some aspergers to solve one single riddle. "How can we make a players mind starve with todays sound, graphics and impatience?"

I could say, call me.. But who am i, and why would they.

If SquareEnix actually reads most comments on these sites they probably think that most of their ''fans'' are a collection of jackasses.

FFVII was a revolution in the gaming industry. Why? Because of its ability to engage the audience, to the very extent that the gamer cared about each person in his 'party' an to the very extent that every battle won, there was a huge feeling of accomplishment as though the battle were real. The soundtracks played a huge role in conveyance. For example each battle consisted of a fast tempo beat that pointed out the obvious (that you were in for a tough battle or escape.. If you could) Also i must say that listening to the soundtracks these days 10 years later from when I first played it, brings back those same feelings that I had for the characters then, oh incluing my childhood memories. Does any other game have this lasting effect? Ask yourself squareenix. Stop doing it for the money. Remake a FFVII because seriously when are you gonna stop? FFXXXXXXXXIIIIIIIIIIIVVVVV? Okay, that was silly. But do you see the point?.. Give the fans what they want. Im sure the majority would agree with a remake, just maybe change the whole graphics and fix 'bugs' aswell. That will be enough im sure. You have to end somewhere anyway. Nuff said.

Final Fantasy VII was a hit because the story worked beautifully and was created in a time when the console market was booming and the PSOne was popular.  XII was very, very close to the same fantasy story formula of VII, but was created when the ps2 was becoming obsolete graphically. A shame really.

Swallow your pride and just listen to the fans! XIII is pretty, but not Final Fantasy as we loved it. Stop remaking the formula every game and give us a classic Final Fantasy game with characters we care about!

Llednar7

The way they are going with the series, it's going to be really hard to top Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy XIII was, in my opinion, abysmal and I find XIII-2 and Lightning Returns to be highly unnecessary. Sure, there are people who loved the first two games and are looking forward to this third one and that's cool. But at least for me, if they keep making games in the series like XIII they won't get very far.

What he means by the series dying after they release it is that it might have all the FF players content, they'd probably sit there for hours and complete it multiple times and they make think "Well, I'm happy, not gonna bother buying any future Final Fantasys because they will never be as good". So it's sorta like the end game. However, all they have to do is try hard to follow the formula, perhaps even follow up with a 7-2? It will peak peoples interest again I believe, not kill the series.

SquareSoft  was good..... SquareEnix ? ... not soo much.

I have been really disappointed in the story line of the games after FF9 story-wise. You cant just make the game 3D with voice overs all of a sudden and rush the story lines. Id rather play 8BIT with a world renowned story line than have nice graphics and not understand nor feel what the main character or side characters are feeling.

Square Enix will never make more sales than FFVII in that series because they have more minds, more opinions, and Enix...... each contradicts the other and honestly .. you need the dev group that made FF7 to be there... than maybe you will get more sales.

Square Enix will squeeze the shit out of the buffalo on the indian head nickle before it releases a remake of FF7... as frustrating as it may sound.

Square realizes they have a time frame.. but that time is getting shorter and shorter as people change their lifestyles and mature.. soon people would have only heard of FF7 and not played it.. and if they did, they will not enjoy it because of the retro graphics...

When i played FF7 I was looking forward to and wondering what was coming next. I could actually put myself in Cloud's place and understand. (THAT IS A STORY LINE). Even through all the chaos with Migar and the annoying yet intriguing Sephiroth, I was able to play and enjoy EVERY second of that game unlike FF10 and FF11.. After those... i Stopped buying S.E. games. I own a PC copy and a PS1 copy of FF7. Keep them very safe too. My son even played it.

Please both the old gamers and the young bucks and remake it while we are still around to buy it... unless of coarse i acquire alzheimers... then ur fucked... just sayin.

Get it together Yoichi... bring Nobuo Uematsu back.. and Tetsuya Nomura. Get them together and make a masterpiece.

They're doing a remake for Final Fantasy X... Is there something I'm missing from what was stated by the CEO?Anyway, they've had countless of Final Fantasy titles released since 7 so I'm not holding my breath on a Final Fantasy game which will reach that kind of height and subsequently, result in the remake of 7 (Square Enix themselves have stated they haven't reached the quality and sales of 7 hitherto folks, don't bring out the pitchforks for me if you feel that another Final Fantasy title is the best in the series lol).

I remember the tech-demo Square-Enix showed years ago.  If there was ever a time they figuratively slapped the FF7 fans across the face, it was then.  They KNEW how popular and well-loved that game was.  They HAD to have known that the fans would probably love to see an enhanced version of FF7.  Why do you not show a game that you ARE planning to release on the PS3 at launch, or in the near future after launch?

That game selection for the demo was a bad idea even had they shown FF6, 8, 9, etc...  The people who loved THOSE games the most would've been enraged as well.  That was the 1st time I had felt any REAL anger for Square.  I had defended that company from so many people inside and outside of the series and genre for so many years.  They don't realize that the very loyal fans to this particular series take things to heart.  Personally, I felt like I was being punished.  It left a bad taste in my mouth.

Square Enix just wants to piss off people who buy their games, first they ruin Kingdom Hearts by putting all the new games on stupid handheld consoles. Now they won't even remake one of the greatest games ever, even though they did a teaser trailer for it at E3 (idk what year). SCREW YOU SE!

SquareEnix. You poeple have got to be the dumbest, most short-sighted smart people I can think of. The series would be dead after a FF7 remake?? Was over after the first installment? I'm not a businessman, but I'm guessing here (and probably fairly accurately...) that if you remade FF7 96% of previous FF7 owners would buy it (provided they are still gamers) in addition to 50+% of new gamers. I think that would lead to large amounts of income to your company... opening up very large doors of opportunity to make an all new FF... Seriously. You. Are. Stupid. Make a sure-fire seller or attempt a probable failure? Given that choice, you go with chance... Yeah, seems logical. Not. And when you do attempt your next game; here's some tips: 1) Choices and customization. That's freaking huge in a RPG. 2) I want to direct the battle, not have the R1 button do it for me. 3) Make me love and hate the bad guy. Make the good guy someone I can relate to. 4) Keep some cheesy-crap, but really... lose the lame attitudes. 4) Make cool summon's. COOL SUMMONS. Write that the f*ck down. And not just 8 of them... 5) Add strategy 6) For the love of all things gamer, make the story interesting.... add twists, add shockers, make me say "What in the...?" in a good way...

I'm done. Quit being douchebags and give us what we want. Remake 7, and then make something worth buying after that. Otherwise, you are already done with the series.

I've been playing FF games since 1990.  For me, the games got better and better right up to, and including, FF7.  FF7  is the only one I had zero complaints about through the entire game.  Honestly, I was SO excited when that game came out.  The game was just awesome all the way through.

I'd love to see a remake, or remaster, of this game.  I see posts all over the internet about Final Fantasy "nostalgia".  If being nostalgic means missing great quality FF games, then I guess I'm nostalgic.  Square started removing key FF elements with the release of FF8.  Now, I enjoyed FF8, but to me it felt like something was missing.  It was more than one thing.  There was no armor or accessories, and each character was stuck with upgrading one weapon.  Those are just a few examples.  FF9 was a decent classic style game.  That game was a snack to hold me over 'till the next FF game.  lol  Still, I enjoyed 9 more than 8.

FF10.....  NO OPEN WORLD MAP!  That was a huge negative for me.  The world map was the 1st thing I thought about after reading about FFX being in development.  They made 9 Final Fantasies with open world maps.  This was the 1st FF game that felt linear to me.  Tidus.. ugh..  I couldn't take him seriously when he was being serious.  AAALL that being said, everything else was great!  lol

Well, I typed too much.  I'm sorry, but I have a passion for FF Games.  Change isn't always good.  You take the winners and build around them.  I'm all for new ideas, but there's no need to take a wrecking-ball to what works for the fans.  That is what has been done.  'Sigh'.. I could go on and on...

Square-Enix!  Final Fantasy was the game that saved the company.  Now it's time to return the favor.

They don't have to remake FF7!! Square Enix needs to make a new FF with the same mechanic's as FF7 and FF10 they were both great games if they just look at the success of FF7 they can continue to create Solid FF Games in the future they still have alot roman numerals to go.

"CEO Yoichi Wada said that a remake of Final Fantasy VII will happen once the company makes a new Final Fantasy title that succeeds the seventh game in terms of quality and sales".... IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN! FFVII was a success because Square Soft actually knew what they were doing. Enix needs to realise that as long as they selfishly ignore the players requests and input and tries to continuously capitalize off Square Soft's success they will always fail. A blind man could see the mistakes they're constantly making. Games are designed based on WHAT THE PLAYERS WANT, not what the retards at Enix thinks is good. My one bucket list entry is: to personally slap the CEO of Enix for destroying what quite possibly have been the best game series in history.

The Final Fantasy Games died when they put in Real time Combat it was dumb you had to spend most of your time trying to get behind a mob, make it simple Turn Based is way better. Drop Summons that turn into Mechs any one remember Summoning Knights of the round that was awesome. Instead of having pay for Ultimate Weapons, you have to find them in dungeons or beat bosses, The Story makes the Game not Graphics FF7 had a great Story I bet people were getting teary when Areis Died, Political Story lines suck like in FF12. FF11 wasn't really a game it was a MMORPG ..

I don't think this will go away.  This subject has been around since about the year of 2000.  There were some 'talks' and some 'rumors' about a remake on the PS2.  Personally, my friends and I started talking about how cool it would be to have a remake of FF7 on the next Playstation system just after the release of FF Anthology on the PS1 in 1999.  FF7 is a big deal, whether some people like it or not.
