No chance of Mortal Kombat 1-3 on Wii U

Franchise co-creator Ed Boon says the likelihood of Wii U Virtual Console re-releases of the classic fighting games is 0.0 percent.

by

Mortal Kombat fans hoping to see the first three games in the fighting franchise released on the Wii U Virtual Console are plain out of luck. It's not going to happen, series co-creator Ed Boon says.

Asked by a fan on Twitter what the chances are for re-releases of the first three games for Wii U are, Boon succinctly replied, "0.0%" It's worth noting that re-releases of those classic games are already available on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC in the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection.

Games in the beloved Mortal Kombat franchise have appeared on Nintendo platforms like the SNES, Nintendo 64, and Wii. None have ever been released on Wii U, but Boon said previously that he thinks the Wii U GamePad controller opens up interesting avenues for play.

"I would like to think we could think of something really innovative and cool. We are all very excited. Whenever there is new hardware you start to think on a bigger scale," Boon told GameTrailers about the Wii U in 2011, before its release. "When you see that screen and controller in there, to me things start connecting in terms of what we can do with our game, enhancing the experience."

Did they forget Nintendo is g rated, they barely have Bayonetta 2 announced for the Wii U.

Article is misleading. The odds on Virtual Console aren't great. Nothing was said about bundling them in a new installment or a special compilation.

wish MK9 had an upgrade version for PS4 and Xbone instead of silly injustice. I still play the game with my friends and the competition fierce. plus it has 2 vs 2 (4 players) which a lot of fighting game don't have (i.e. injustice)

Why it's always something -ve about Nintendo / Wii U? Are these games being released on Ps4 or Xbox one? If not then why only focus this one console. This is called trashy journalism. Thank you.

Im not a nintendo fan, but have you ever thought that the age rate is for min age and not max age, it's not like people are suddenly gonna rejuvenate when playing pokemon.

Would be nice if I could finally get MK Trilogy on my PS3

Even Nintendo titles aren't selling big numbers on Wii-U for the most part and their stuff sells the best on their console so, a collection of 20 year old fighting games wont do well on Wii-U either. Especially seeing the overwhelming majority of the audience that bought the console's tastes being different from what MK is like.

Its a bummer that Boon doesn't like money. If he doesn't care for money anymore maybe he should donate the money he would have got to charity.

I love to play some MK2 on a nintendo console again. I played that so much in the day.

I've got like 3 copies of each on so many different systems I'll do without this on my Wii U.

there is a lot of shit in the comments section as always ! Oh and for everyone saying Nintendo doesn't want any "adult2 gaming anymore ... Seriously ? Is blood, violence, guns the only critarias to an adult game ? You aren't more adult by playing a M rated game ... a M rated game is just a game with more violence, nothing more. You could turn every E rated game to T or M just by adding blood to it.

"Whenever there is new hardware you start to think on a bigger scale" that is until you find out how it's barely a step above current hardware.

@g1rldraco7

They're also bringing the G-rated Fatal Frame to the Wii U, also what's that supposed to mean "barely have Bayonetta 2 announced for the Wii U." the game has pretty much been confirmed for a summer release in Japan.

Nintendo needs to kick it up with their Virtual Console releases. That's one area where I am rather confused why it takes so long.

THEY HAVE ONE GAME OUT.. MARIO KART IS GOING TO SELL LIKE SO MANY GAMES AND SSB.

I DON'T THINK YOU UNDERSTAND HOW THESE THINGS WORK.

@bunchanumbers  I think he loves money too much you see, if he ports the game to that console it may cost him more that what the game is going to sell so he'd rather not waste his time like most other 3rd party companies.

It's not his fault Nintendo has it's head up its ass.

@Coco_pierrot  Well technically, if you buy it yourself from a shop you are "more adult".

Also your argument doesn't work if you reverse it, making it a bad point.  Do you think taking the blood out of GTAV, Tomb Raider or Bioshock would turn it into a E?

@playstationzone  Certainly didn't waste any time learning to speak English properly eh?

Nonetheless this console is bad but it is far from the worst, clearly you never saw the SEGA 32x among many other disasters.

@bernard978 @playstationzone  I actually think the console is far better than the Wii and a pretty good console in general. Having someone request MK 1-3 on any system now is pretty sad. I'll hold out for E.T. on the virtual console.

I'm not here to hate on Nintendo, but by originality do you mean 12 year old hardware, including the controller, and recycled franchises?

>New trend..

Mario Kart since Super NES has sold well. It's a beloved part of this world, lol, strange to think about, right, but totes true. SSB is also along those lines, Zelda, Donkey Kong seems to be taking a bit more progressive route adding and changing with the times (I've no doubt that Nintendo could bring some serious Nintendo LOVE (I unno even know man, it's just lovely, the way they make and hold their games..) back into the series, Metroid is there too, Super Mario Brothers is there (I'm almost willing to bet that people right now are like, well we got a new classic Mario game (You get to turn into a freaking cat! It's sooo much fun!) what else you got Nintendo..? (Wonderful 101 is AMAZING but it doesn't have the same ring as all the other beloved titles, really just up to people to give it a proper shot..) But Mario Kart rolls around (heh) SSB get's released, more games get announced, Wii U will sell like a ton of consoles.

@chev9390 @danusty @bunchanumbers  cost him more? WTF?! we are talking about 3 popular games which in theory should cost pittence to get working on a emu, hell there are people who manage to emulate these games in their FREE TIME!

@danusty @bernard978 @playstationzone  His first language is obviously not English? What if it is, and he's just that uneducated? I can imagine him reading what you said about it being obvious, and coming to the sad realization that he would love to have an excuse like that.

@canuckbiker

I no the lag isn't that noticeable but some tests were ran, specifically with Killzone Shadowfall and there was a hint lag of detected and for any multiplayer game that would utilize dual screens, any sort of lag is unacceptable. The remote play feature is fine, an amazing feature, but I'm talking about utilizing the Vita in a similar fashion as the Wii U because barely any developer would create a game that requires you to own 2 systems in order to fully play.

While it might sound fanboyish of me, I actually do forgive Nintendo when they hype up stuff because in comparison to other developers, they just don't do it enough or the games they do hype up only come out once in a while. Although part of it is the media and the way they decide to present any information.

Yep, see you around ;)

canuckbiker
canuckbiker

I suppose so. But on a note about the vita/ps4 streaming, I've had no lag what so ever. I am linking straight to the system skipping wifi however, but any distance you can get lag free play with a dualshock 4, you can get the same consistency with a vita. I have no idea why you think it's not popular with devs, it's mandatory for all ps4 games to include this function. Unless you mean using it as an accessory controller and not a second screen, which I haven't seen much of, but that distracting stuff draws me out of the game, and I find it hurts more than helps with immersive gameplay.

I've heard people using it over wifi can have some lag, especially at great distances over different networks.

As for game hype they're all over doing it in my opinion. I couldn't go anywhere without hearing about titanfall last month, and why does supers smash brothers need a new article for every single character they announce for the game? Personally I loved the last of us, but I was tired of the hype train long before it's release date.

Good gaming buddy. I'll run into you sooner, or later in these articles.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@canuckbiker

I get what you're saying.

The Vita/PS4 still has some lag, that's why it's not a popular option for developers. It's not that the screen is a big leap or a great evolution, it's just that the technology required to make it happen on a home console needs to be advanced for it to happen perfectly.

I actually don't think any of the big 3 are that willing to take risks with new IPs, Sony is probably the most willing, but then they balance it out by hyping the living hell out of the new IP to ensure its success. The level of attention The Last of Us is getting is pretty much on the level of "shoving down your throat." When it comes to new IPs, it was mainly middle ground developers or Indies that gave us the bulk of new IPs.

I never did say that the others weren't at all willing to experiment with their franchises, it's just that Nintendo's more willing.

canuckbiker
canuckbiker

I'm not saying their franchises are a bad thing, they can feel fresh, but it doesn't change the fact it's not original characters, or for the most part gameplay. That's all I was responding about.

As for the hardware, the CPU is the only thing I could think of in tech that wasn't available during last gens console launch. You should also try vita/ps4 for lag free, beautiful gameplay. But we've been doing this with controllers forever, I don't see how adding a screen is a giant leap in evolution.

Like I said I wasn't here to bash Nintendo. Just trying to point out to chev, that saying Nintendo is considerably more original than xbox, or ps, is just ridiculous. They all have franchises they milk to death, but both MS & Sony are considerably more willing to take a risk establishing a new franchise, over Nintendo. Halo has an over the top strategy game, uncharted has a digital card game, there are lots of examples I don't feel like typing, so I wouldn't say either company is scared to experiment with established franchises either.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@canuckbiker

But the hardware isn't 12 years old, it's been confirmed that the Wii U uses hardware from 2009/2010. Just because it's not super powerful doesn't mean it's old, while they did sacrifice power, Nintendo aimed to make a console that was very power efficient and had little chance of failure, that requires pretty modern hardware in order to pull off which they did. Even the controller itself, sure it uses resistive tech, but when it comes to gaming, I've found resistive touch screens to be more accurate, especially when using a stylus. Finally, the fact that the system can stream to two 2 screens with absolutely no lag is what makes the hardware advanced.

In terms of their franchises, Nintendo has proven more than anyone else that you can be original and creative with established franchises. They're typically not afraid to take risks with many of their franchises, something most developers wouldn't dare do with their blockbuster franchises.

Can they make more new IPs? Sure, but the idea of implementing new ideas within established franchises has always worked tremendously well and hasn't hindered their ability to be creative since those ideas go on to be successful with the help of a mascot.
