Nintendo: We Have No Smash Bros Premium DLC Plans Beyond Mewtwo

Mewtwo, the rare Pokemon character offered for free to those who buy both the Wii U and 3DS versions of Super Smash Bros, will eventually go on sale as paid DLC.

However, this is the only existing plan Nintendo has for premium add-on content, the company has stressed.

Nintendo clarified the matter in a statement sent to GameSpot, following somewhat conflicting reports about future DLC for Super Smash Bros. The Kyoto corporation explained: "Mewtwo will be made available to purchase as add-on content in the future, and is also available as part of the Super Smash Bros. Club Nintendo promotion, which offers consumers different ways to obtain this content. There are no other plans regarding paid add-on content at this stage."

Later next year, Mewtwo will be given for free to those who purchase both Super Smash Bros for Wii U and for 3DS. In Europe, owners of both versions will also get an exclusive physical double CD set of the game's soundtrack, featuring 72 songs.

Due to recent comments by the games' director, Masahiro Sakurai, it was believed that buying both versions would be the only way that fans could play as Mewtwo.

"I understand that DLC could add a lot to the appeal of Smash Bros," Sakurai said in a recent interview, before talking down the possibility.

"Creating DLC would involve large additional costs and require the involvement of a lot of people," Sakurai explained. "I can't yet give you an answer about whether the price would justify the costs and criticisms mentioned above."

However, the fine print in Nintendo's Mewtwo offer suggested the character will eventually become paid DLC, which Nintendo has now confirmed as accurate.
