Nintendo 'very sorry' for Wii U day-one updates

President Satoru Iwata laments day-one network patch for new system that "takes such a long time" to download; says Miiverse will not copy Xbox Live or PlayStation Network.

New Wii U owners must download a hefty day-one patch if they wish to take advantage of all the system's network-based features. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata wishes this were not the case, telling IGN that he feels "very sorry" that such an update was required.

"Personally, I think that users should be able to use all the functions of a console video game machine as soon as they open the box," Iwata said. "So I feel very sorry for the fact that purchasers of Wii U have to experience a network update which takes such a long time, and that there are the services which were not available at the hardware's launch."

Elsewhere in the interview, Iwata said Nintendo will not follow the lead of Microsoft's Xbox Live and Sony's PlayStation Network with regards to the Wii U's online functionality.

"We have not thought that offering the same features that already exist within other online communities would be the best proposal for very experienced game players," Iwata said. He added that the Wii U's social network Miiverse is its own "very unique game-dedicated social graph that has never existed before."

Lastly, Iwata addressed some of the prelaunch skepticism regarding the Wii U. He said such cynicism is not uncommon and reiterated Nintendo's belief that once users get their hands on the Wii U, they will understand why it is compelling.

"The brand new user interfaces that Nintendo invented often faced skeptical views before a hardware launch, but wound up becoming de facto industry standards," Iwata said. "It is challenging to communicate attractions which are hard to understand unless you actually touch and experience them yourself. This is especially so with Wii U because it has unprecedented entertainment potential."

The Wii U launched in North America on November 18 and sold 400,000 units during its launch week. The system comes to Europe and Australia November 30 before launching in Japan on December 8.

Nintendo gave most of us our first real experience in gaming. They had storied consoles like the NES, SNES, and N64. They invented and nearly perfected portable gaming for a time starting with the green screen GB and culminating in the DS.

Then they went Gimmicky. The Gamecube was a joke, the Wii/Wii U are dust collectors and the 3DS hurts my head. How about apologizing for that? The fact that the 3DS can hardly outsell the aging DSi should tell Nintendo something given that the 3DS has been out for a year and has already seen a price drop.

If you don't like it, get over it. Life moves on with or without you. If you do like it, have fun! Read back over this meaningless argument, which is really just a petty squabble you would see in a kindergarten playground, and take this to mind: It is just another console.

Furthermore, the idea that Mii-verse is NOT doing what Xbox Live or PSN is doing is RETARDED. Xbox live is the best online service in the history of the internet. PSN isn't bad either, but it's free so pick your poison. The Wii's "Online" capabilities were a joke. I literally laughed at how bad they were. ...Just go die somewhere Nintendo. I'm so sick of your sub-par standards.

They are sorry for the update?

How about an apology for a pisspoor console release? 2 times in a row now!

I understand they value innovation over graphical powerhouses... which I like. However, creating a sub-par system is NOT the way to generate innovation. By doing it this way, you are creating a childs TOY.

You want to spur innovation nintendo? Here is how, in simple common sense steps

1. Kill the Console line... just kill it now before the Wii U becomes the modern day dreamcast.

2. Put your first party games on consoles that DONT SUCK SERIOUS BALLS.

3. Make innovative controls and devices for consoles that DONT SUCK SERIOUS BALLS.

Simple right? Everyone gets what they want. Nintendo will still make handheldsMicrosoft... and i guess sony, will keep making consoles

Working together, yet seperate, that is how it should be.

but I digress, we all know that nintendo doesn't get it anymore. Plus...there is that Reggie Fills-aime guy... who everytime he comes on stage I want to punch him in the throat untill he chokes to death.

Seriously, the way that guy looks, talks, and thinks should be grounds for execution.

Iwata should be sorry for releasing a half assed next gen console

I would be sad if I boughtt a new console only to find out that half of the HDD is the OS. $299 for what? half the cost is probably for the wii u tablet.

First off people have to note that the specs and some developer contents can be misleading. The metro developer's comment was later clarified by the publisher by basically saying that they don't want to allocate the resources to put the game on the Wii U not that the CPU is horrible and slow.   The CPU's speed is low though it's also a 3 core processor.   The CPU doesn't do as much in a Wii as it does in a PS3 or 360 due to the GPGPU rather doing a lot more of the work compared to a GPU.

so Horribly outdated no.  That's not even including the fact that the Wii U's gamepad is just great.

as for the update, it sucks really there's no way around it.  However it's one time and I'm sure most people getting a Wii U the network features really aren't their first thing they want to do with it, they can save the update for when they are sleeping.

The fact of the matter that Nintendo is actually willing to apologize for a one time at most 4 hour update unless you have a horribly slow internet connection says something about the company.  Most would of just made a excuse for it.

I am sure the five people that own the Wii U is mad. Yes, only five own it because it is a horribly outdated peace of "tech".

half the posts here don't know what they r talkin about! first off you should have a go on the machine before slamming it. yes i had 2 wait 1 hour for the update 2 download then there was the time spent setting it up! but its an amazing machine and i have not noticed any of these inconsistancies people r talking about? in fact im typing this on my Wii U right now. now im gonna go back to my game that is suspended in the background while i browse the net :)

They SHOULD follow the example of XBLA and PSN to a degree... they've both been successful in their own ways and online, much like HD and DLC, is an entirely new thing for Nintendo.

So basically, you're a selfish bratty entitled gamer who thinks that because you don't like what you see, it's automatically trash and the company should suffer because of it. Got it, this is what the generation has created, gamers who demand absolute perfection and everything else is meaningless.

 @sunyatanada76 Nintendo figured out over a gen ago that they're not going to be able to keep up with Sony and Microsoft in terms of raw processing power. And so, they're doing the only thing that makes any sense: trying to provide unique gameplay options. Let's be honest, the market doesn't need another PS/Xbox clone (a handful of exclusives aside, they're pretty much the same console)

But like any other console, whether or not they succeed really depends on the software (unfortunate name aside). 1st party nintendo stuff has historically been pretty good (even moreso now that they acquired Monolith), and hopefully nintendo will design games that really utilize the gamepad in creative ways (you have to admit, the options it opens for asymmetric multiplayer are pretty interesting - tell me armored core v wouldn't be kicass on the WiiU), but 3rd party devs may just use it to shovel ports, without designing games specifically for the system.

At the end of it, I'm just bored with the industry trends that put graphical output ahead of any other design consideration and has led us to a neverending release cycle of variations on the same 3 games (I won't name names, but you all know who I mean). If they come through with their promise to focus on unique gaming experiences, this is probably the gen I go back to nintendo.

 @megakick If you look up the price in Japan then convert it, that tablet costs about 160$CDN

 @nedrith

 It is out of date, comparable to a console that was released 7 year ago is out of date. Microsoft/ Sony are currently working on new consoles and they will not be using processors comparable to the XBOX 360 and PS3.

 @nedrith So, which branch of Nintendo do you work for?

An UPDATE that's taking have of the memory?  Why not address that?  It must've been a disaster on a huge scale.

My desire to get a WiiU was low - now it's not even on my radar once the price comes drastically down.

 @Thanatos2k They only care about money at this point. And they realized they can make more money off of stupid people buying holiday gimmicks then actually putting in the money to produce a worthwhile system. The nintendo we knew and loved that brought us the NES, SNES and N64 is dead and gone. RIP

 @kohle36  @sunyatanada76  or they can just stop assuming what gamer need and what gamer don't need or quit being cheap and use some better material to make their console.  I read a article on the wii mini and they try to explain their reason of striping it to nothing more then just a game console ( no internet, no wifi, and no sd port ) saying that people dont need all that to enjoy game and still sell a console.  Really? in this time and age the world must be ending.

VenkmanPHD
VenkmanPHD

 @megakick  @nedrith Megakick is right, they actually released something at the end of the generation, that's on par with this generation. Talk about a step BACKWARDS.

Plus, I agree with sevennizz. I was going to buy a Wii U once they dropped down from the bran new prices.However, after having seen and heard all there is... Hell no. Just HELL NO.

I will be waiting untill a used WII U is almost dirt cheap (I give it a year) and then I will buy a used one, JUST to make sure nintendo doesn't see a dime of that sale. THEN to further illustrate my point, I am going to hack and mod the hell out of it out of SPITE.

Nintendo is no longer a company that deserves my money. Untill they stop making piss-poor consoles, and put their mascots on REAL consoles, I just don't care anymore.

F you nintendo, you are done as far as I am concerned.

 @VenkmanPHD  @megakick

Nintendo hasn't been about power or graphics since the Wii, and really it's hard to argue that they were ever about graphics, look at mario and zelda both could of had a ton better graphics than they had.  However the Wii U is a large improvement on the Wii's innovative and new controls(and the Wii was so innovative that both sony and MS had to copy it).

 Sevenizz, If you'd look at my posts about other consoles you would quickly see I work for none of the 3 gaming companies and only post the truth.  While a update that takes up half the originally available memory sucks remember also that the console can support external HDs.  8GB of memory was never going to be useful for much more than updates and save data and there is a reason nintendo offered a 10% discount on all digital purchases made by the deluxe edition.  TBH I wouldn't be surprised if the update really needed 5GB of space and it was just to reserve space.

TBH NSMBU has shown that what nintendo has done with their network features is the right way to go.  Atleast when it comes to the gaming aspect.  I can't support some of their incomplete features like tying content to consoles and such.

 @abHS4L88  @megakick  @TheOnlyConan I highly doubt that abHS4L88. The majority of people who own the Wii U are people who either A. Went out and bought the hot new product because it was the hot new product, or B gamers who have a collection obsession. (like myself, hell I almost bought one till I realized what outdated shit it was) or finally C Parents buying their kids things without knowing and/or giving a damn.

 @megakick  @Thanatos2k  @TheOnlyConan

OS isn't slow, where'd you get that from? Oh, that, that's old news, the OS is now much more stable and loading times are up to speed.

Graphics on par? Yes because developers know how to draw out the full power of a system within the first couple of weeks of the system's life.

Actually, the GamePad does make multitasking and doing certain things (like typing) MUCH easier and yes, more efficient.

Why should they take a huge loss? Oh yes, because they have underground divisions that can compensate for the losses they make in the videogame department right, just like Sony and Microsoft right?

So you're insulting developers' creativity now? Guess what? There's a huge possibility that both the next gen Playstation/XBox will feature something very unique that'll also be an integral part of the system, but I guess since developers are lazy and don't care about such things, we'll just continue to see the same old games and nothing new.

megakick
megakick

 @abHS4L88  @Thanatos2k  @TheOnlyConan

 Efficient how the OS is very slow and uses up a lot of memeory. The graphics are par? Wii U is more efficeint because it has a tablet? Nintendo used a lot of dated tech to keep the price competitive with the XBOX 360/ PS3 and not take a huge loss on console slaes.

Nintendo should have made the tablet an accessory its' not like many publishers is going make many fantastic different ways to use the tablet.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

 @megakick  @TheOnlyConan

That doesn't mean it's old, it most likely means that it runs more efficiently because you know, technology is not only about becoming more powerful but also more efficient, something I think a lot of you have forgotten.

megakick
megakick

 @abHS4L88  @TheOnlyConan

 Nintendo uses a 3 core like the xbox360 and the processors are slower. Its' not impossible to use old tech.

You don't have to buy the lastest CPU for your computer.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

 @TheOnlyConan

Care to share this "proof" you have? Those specs that were revealed aren't proof because it says nothing about the architecture of the system, plus it was taken in "Wii Mode" in which the system runs at a lower rate to accommodate the Wii games, similar to when the Wii ran Gamecube games.

Also it's impossible for the Wii U to have 7 year old tech, since you know, it doesn't exist anymore from hardware manufacturers.
