Nintendo talks competition with Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Scott Moffitt says "we're the one that is doing something a little different," calls out Wii U GamePad as "innovative" and "unique."

Compared to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the Wii U is the only next-generation system doing something "a little different," according to Nintendo marketing executive Scott Moffitt.

Moffitt explained to GameSpot this week that the Wii U's second-screen functionality, via the GamePad, represents a new way of play that is unmatched by its competitors.

"If you look at the new generation of consoles, we're the one that is doing something a little different," Moffitt said. "With second-screen gaming, with the GamePad, we're trying to offer something that's innovative, that feels unique and different that people can't play on past generation consoles."

Though the Wii U is the only new system to feature built-in second-screen support, the Xbox One and PS4 will offer similar functionality through SmartGlass and a stand-alone application, respectively.

Yesterday, Nintendo announced a $50 price cut for the 32GB Wii U, dropping the system to $300 effective September 20. The 8GB model will be phased out. This new pricing will put the Wii U a full $100 below the PS4 and $200 under the Xbox One.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently commented on the Xbox One and PS4 launch lineups, saying, "Meh."

Dear Nintendo:  I won't argue that the Wii U is in a class by itself, however, I wouldn't be so quick to negate the Xbox One and enhanced Kinect features.  I lost 60 lbs using the Xbox 360 and Kinect and can't wait to see what the enhanced Kinect will offer in this new generation.

this guy chats so much sh1te, your not even classed as a next gen console, your another revamp last gen system using a gimmick to try over hype the system and nintendo hoped it would be a repeat wii in terms of sales.

Also looking that today nearly every child uses a smart phone or a table to play games, nintendo was hoping that they could get a slice of this market by cloning the tablet concept.

there is nothing great about this forced iFAD controller, maybe PS4/XBX1 dont have something like this (FORCED) but the options are there if DEVS want to add the same type of controls using SMARTGLASS or even a TABLET (like BEYOND SOULS).

this console is far over priced, i mean what your actually getting, a subpar PS3/360, a MEASLY 32GB MAX internal storage and LAST GEN PORTS.

this system will soon hit its limits and will lack the great 3rd party games... only games its getting so far are multi console ports (Stated as SUBPAR LAST GEN VERSIONS).

so WOW lets see how "INNOVATIVE" this iFAD controller is, when all your left to play is the usual recycled sh1t nintendo keep releasing.

I'll tell Nintendo what was "meh".  When I bought the Wii U the console completely froze-up on me at the very initial launch forcing me to unplug it & start it again despite the instructions warning me that could have wrecked the whole thing (but no choice, I tried everything else first to no avail).  The gamepad would tell me on several occasions that it could not find a connection to my console despite sitting exactly 4 feet away from it with no obstructions in the way.  The "rumble" in the gamepad hardly rumbled at all...instead it was more like a noisy alarm-buzzer and - no joke - my sister in the same room thought a bee or wasp had flown into the room when it was the gamepad "rumble" on one occasion.

THAT was "meh".  Needless to say I sold the piece of junk within just one month of buying it.  They have some good games, but not many, and the machine is a piece of junk that i honestly think is a big step backwards from the Wii instead of forward to next-gen.

Blind or stupid to make this comment. They should learn or be stuck in the past. The WiiU is a neat system but, once all the devs staring pulling out, that is the nail in the cofin.

Sad to say, I still enjoy the mario titles but, till they start putting them on the Xbox and playstation, I wont be playing much of them.

I would only pay $100 for a WiiU

Sorry Nintendo but you're firmly in third place now - even with all the trouble MS has had trying to market the X1 (particularly when Don "to hell with people who don't like my vision" Mattrick was in charge and leading MS head on and full speed over the cliff).

The Wii was successful because it was a cheap to make and you cleverly marketed it at an untapped demographic so it didn't matter that it was, in comparison; under powered, lacked the features of other consoles and had a sparse library - particularly of the BIG name multi-platform games.

But the Wii U is supposed to be a direct competitor to the PS4 and X1... So you can't get away with the same thing again. I know you had a lot of ground to make up after the Wii in terms of producing a gamer focused console... but you kinda just looked to build something that'd outperform the 360 and PS3, instead of thinking about what the then Next-Box and PS4 would be like and trying to match that.

Sure your little touch pad is nice and has some potential but it's not something developers really seem interested in using, in fact it seems to be part of the cause they're fleeing cause to support it means extra work in porting a game,  and really I'm not that fussed about having to pause to go to a menu to make changes (which is MOSTLY what the touch pad gets used for).

If you  guys want to compete, not just be the "also ran", then you have to pull the Wii U and rebuild it to match its opponents, accept that there are genres of games out there BESIDES platformers, and get back in the good books of 3rd party developers.

A consoles differences fall short when the games don't take advantage of those differences, or at least have games that are unique.

The only games that interest me right now are third party because all the first party ones are either predictable sequels or just uninteresting.

As far as I'm concerned you are childish and stuck in the past Nintendo. You can sell as many of your Fisher Price toys as you want, but I will NEVER respect you on the same level as the other platforms.

Being able to play games on the gamepad is amazing.... I just wish the games they had were good... Actually Super Mario Bros U is pretty amazing.... I wont lie

So far, I don't see any major improvement from the big three on their next gen consoles. All they do is improving on technical capability, nothing outside the box. VR tech is the only thing showing a big leap now in gaming history.

I pre-ordered a Wii U with the Wind Waker combo. I enjoyed that game even though it is 10 years old. I'd like to know when the actual Zelda for the Wii U is coming out but I don't see that until late 2015. Whenever it's coming out, it won't be soon enough. That has become the problem with Nintendo: they don't have the 3rd party support to fill the gaps in between their good 1st party games.

Well Moffitt should try Xbox Smartglass and the PS Vita !

"Meh" was my reaction when I saw that the full Wii U lineup was limited to : Mario, Luigi, Pokemon, Zelda...

What competition? PS4 and XB1 have already outsold the Wii U's global sales in pre-orders alone.

DavidinCT

Let's see here. The WiiU has devs pulling from it because of the lack of sales, No big hot titles (besides the Nintendo games), They are dropping the prices on the systems, great but, if you cant get the titltes, how are you going to sell the systems ?

I wanted one but, after seeing the devs pull out and low title release count of big games, I dont think I will get one unless get one for like $100 or so, maybe just for the mario games but, even that is not worth spending $300+game costs compared what I will get with a Xbox one or PS4...

Sorry Nintendo, you have a LOT of work before you will see the WiiU in my living room and I play games almost every day...

Not every thing about the innovation ,I think Nintendo wasted the chance to be number one in the market, they wasted it by making wii with a very good controller but very old graphics,if Nintendo have just made the graphics like ps3 and xbox 360 at this time they would have gone number one because a lot of people bought the console just because of the controllers but when people found out that the  graphics just little better than ps2 people start to feel its not enough plus no AAA games and them AAA games like zelda was having old graphics.

I am not talking here about Nintendo fan boys ,I am talking about people who was new to Nintendo when they bought Nintendo wii, they were expecting games with good graphics using thous great controllers but they didn't .

If everyone thinks that the so called next generation sony and microsoft consoles are going to be a whole lot better than this genration have another thing coming,i went to gamescom and both sony and microsoft show off their games using high end PC's not console hardware.I saw and played games on both consoles and to be honest i was not blown away by what i saw.Battlefield ran smooth but the textures and detailes were rough one improvement i did see were the particle effects, even the designer of the PS4 said that the console will reach its full potential in year 3 or 4 years. And no im not a fan boy i still have every console i have ever bought from the vectrex to the 3DO,Neo Geo and so on.The fact is that i was not that impressed with the new consoles and yes i have both (manager at gamestop) i know but its a job.And to say the WIIU has weak hardware is false it takes a while for a system to reach its full potential give it a chance its a fact that its 50% more powerfull than PS3 and xbox 360 and from what i saw at gamescom it is next gen you will see in do time.Lets just enjoy our console of choice and stop attacking the competition.

i respect everyone who likes nintendo and etc... but Wii U is going to fall really... the games are not that innovative, and the promises that nintendo says will fall with the weak hardware

The reason I prefer sony and MS over Nintendo is that Nintendo doesnt really make games for big guys . I mean what kind of a 15 or 20 year old would want to play Mario or Donkey Kong.

only thing good bout the wii u, is bayonetta 2. they could use more power games like what sony and xbox has, in this gen mario and zelda just don't cut it anymore. :)

the second screed can be usefull in 2 -3 player co op , where one of the player can use the game pad screen as shown in nintendo land. it could also be used in games where the whole screen space is needed due to camera movement. So i say gamepad is a good addition if used the right way. one more example rayman legends used it

I think everyone will be utilising second screens in different ways. Let us hope that developers rise to the challenge

Zombi U is great, too.  It's a great game.  But it was a frickin launch game...10 months ago.  They totally shit the bed with their lack of software and they'll never catch up.  I don't care how many smash bros. or mario karts come out, I just don't see people buying consoles for those games anymore.

JaylisJayP
JaylisJayP

@jark888

For once, all I WANT as a gamer is technical improvements.  Really, enough with the "innovation."  Nobody fucking utilizes it right or develops for it, so all it does is take away resources and cost you more in the end.

I'd gladly eat my words if they put any effort into giving core gamers an experience with this stuff they actually enjoy, but it's an afterthought seemingly the second the hardware even hits the market.

JaylisJayP

@ORB1T4LOne

It might "represent" a new way to play, but since nobody uses it right (aside from Zombi U imo), it's a totally irrelevant and PR-speak comment.  Nintendo really should've waited to release the console until they KNEW they could deliver on the software.

Chico86_basic
Chico86_basic

@ORB1T4LOne Smartglass and Vita will be like the Kinect and Move of this generation. Microsoft and Sony don't have the guts or the willingness to make them work as much as Nintendo does. It's pretty obvious when you start thinking about it because the GamePad is your primary controller on WiiU, just like the wii-mote was on the original Wii. Also, when it comes to the fall lineup it's all just matter of taste and nothing else.

@DavidinCT Thing is, that for those who enjoy mario, zelda etc, its just as much fun to buy the nintendo3DS (or 2DS now) which costs a fraction of the price of a WiiU and will give just as much fun, if not even more fun as at least their handhelds have more titles.

@felixvarela07 It's possible that if the actual PS4 or Xbone hardware were there, it would have been stolen. That is just my opinion of course. Then the would try to sell it on eBay. lol

@callsignalphaTime to quote C.S. Lewis:

“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

@callsignalpha Im in my 30's and I still play them.I grew up playing Donkey Kong and Pac Man type games in the arcade that's why I like Nintendo because the games are all not super realistic and are more old school style.I like realistic games too that's why I built a nice PC.

rIVAL_sWORD84
rIVAL_sWORD84

@callsignalpha  that is your opinion, I play Nintendo and ps3 games and i have been gaming since Atari so you can guess i have come long way. I like games like God of war to Uncharted to Donkey kong. Its not about kids. The Nintendo games are made for all ages. its your choice if it doesn't interest you it has puzzles and fun. but frankly i am a little sick of playing FPS and gory games all the time plus the amount of sex and violence in todays games have increased to a level i cant seem to play with my youger sister and brother so i enjoy playing Nintendo with them.

rIVAL_sWORD84
rIVAL_sWORD84

@retsmot Nintendo games have replay value, i dont feel like selling any nintendo games after i have played and competed 100% of the game, but on the contrary when i play Ps3 game i feel like selling off because mostly ps3 games are based on cinematic and story. i only kept few games so far like Assassin Creed, Arkham Series and few more because they are open world and i feel like playing  again.

ORB1T4LOne
ORB1T4LOne

@Chaos_Dante_456 @Grenadeh Well, it's pretty simple, the Xbox One and the PS4 pre-orders reached millions, while the Wii U global sales barely reached 180 000 units ;)

callsignalpha
callsignalpha

@rIVAL_sWORD84 @callsignalpha yep ! ur right . But you have to admit one thing.  You cant really live with JUST the WiiU. Because most games are kiddish and only a few are serious. While on ps3 you get a whole load of games belonging to every category .games for big guys , teens like me and children. So what i mean is that ps3 (not sure about 360) has a wideeee library for almost everyone to enjoy

rIVAL_sWORD84
rIVAL_sWORD84

@callsignalpha I agree with you that the ps3 have games for teens, adults and young alike. But Nintendo have party games which are so much fun for example when i want to play games with my young or elder brother i dont have many option for offline co op play on ps3 which i used to have during psx days, ps3 is more about money and so the only option is online. what about offline co op. no these days games on ps3 are either single player or online play. I get to play games  co op on wii plus the games are fun. have you played donkey kong or any party games on wii its really fun if you have played on mega drive or snes than you will enjoy wii or WiiU as well. the games actually are more than blood, gore or sex. If you only enjoy playing games like GTA or sleeping dogs than Nintendo is not for you. But if you like puzzles and like to play in group than Nintendo is for you. ex: Wii party. donkey kong, and many others.the gameplay experience is different on Wii and WiiU with motion controller and wiiU gamepad.
