Nintendo shares continue climb

Boosted by the DS and Wii's success, the Mario Factory's market capitalisation nears that of Sony.

by

Kyoto, Japan-based Nintendo's shares, driven by the success of the DS and the Wii, closed up 1.4 percent today in Tokyo at 44,500 yen (approximately $360).

The latest growth in the share price now brings the Mario Factory's market capitalisation--the cumulative value of its stock--to 6.30 trillion yen ($51 billion), reports Reuters. This takes it past Panasonic parent Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.'s 6.23 trillion yen ($50 billion) and has it closing in on Sony's 6.64 trillion yen ($54 billion).

Over the last two years, Sony's stock has gained 72 percent, outperforming the Nikkei's average of 59 percent. Nintendo shares have also jumped, some 300 percent over the same time period.

Analysts reacted to the news positively. KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide said, "Nintendo is a market leader in everything it does now, which is basically the handheld as well as the console gaming market. We haven't seen Nintendo being a market leader in both products in over a decade."

Ichiyoshi Investment Management chief fund manager Mitsushige Akino said, "I think Nintendo is bound to overtake Sony (in market capitalisation)."

Awesome, go Nintendo. Always hoped these guys would get back on top. What I love about Nintendo is that they are a company of artists and true game enthusiasts. They make works of art, and rarely do they let a bad game get released. I don't understand why anyone would hate on Nintendo. They are THE company for gamers. Nintendo are game developers for the people; making games anyone can play and enjoy. There really is no reason not to be happy for one of the finest gaming company/developers that ever existed.

another achievement for the Big N! why is it that people are still hoping that one day sony will win or the next two years ect??? by that time we might have a wii2 in our hand. ps3 is future proof? more like the future is ps3 proof. we dont need blue ray just yet...

AHA! I knew it!!!! Nintendo IS kicking so much butt! 300 percent! Beat that people! Everyone keeps badmouthing The Big-N but guess what? They are doing tremendous! NYEH! *sticks out tongue* Not that I don't like anything besides Nintendo...seeing as how I have MULTIPLE game systems from all the companies, I'm just glad that the numbers are SHOWING that Nintendo isn't in last place anymore. Take That Nintendo haters!

Nintendo said all along that it's not about graphics anymore, they said graphics have reached a peak and are no longer a main factor. A lot of people discounted that, and thought the Wii wouldn't do well. Those same people thought the Nintendo DS was gimmicky, and underpowered, they said it wouldn't last. The Nintendo DS will die off in a few years after launch people said. Where are those people now? Where are they? Now the Nintendo DS is stronger than it's ever been. The Nintendo Wii is selling out as soon as it touches the stores. Even today people are saying the same things about the Nintendo Wii, that they said about the Nintendo DS before it. They're saying the Nintendo Wii is gimmicky, and underpowered, they're saying it wont last. They're saying that it will fade in a few years. Just another chance for a lot people to eat their own words, once... again.

The Wii is selling well only because of the name brand, the cheap cost and the early large announcements by Nintendo of their 1st party franchise games, truly this will help nintendo..for awhile. I predict sales will dwindle down by mid 2008 or fall of 2008 and HD games of PS3 and Xbox360 will rise, if not 360, the PS3's sales will increase no doubt about it.

theone86 Yes, I can't wait to buy a system with HD capacity and no quality games to play on it.......................... Wow,do you really think there is no Quality games in HD. I'm sorry you think that.

If "HD quality" was going to dominate the market, then the VC would have failed. The graphics have tapped out, "life like" is not as cool as what everyone thought it was going to be before it was reachable. If a game is FUN it will succeed. Nintendo is making FUN... The purpose of the industry.

I just hope the momentum doesn't slow down. It's good to see the company that got me hooked on video games back in business. I'm not against Sony nor do I want to see Sony fail, but they better just admit they screwed up and make a major price drop on the PS3 if they want to play catch-up.

Nintendo has done the impossible once again and made everyone stare at them with wide open eyes and gaping mouths. However, I love all consoles, and it's possible that the other consoles could come back later. I'm not with or against anyone, this is just how I feel about all this.

Good job Nintendo, looks like all that hard work on being innovative really paid off. They were taking a big risk with the DS and Wii but they analyzed their consumers very well and are patting themselves on the backs for it now.

@ Nharia: "All this means that if you invested in Nintendo you should be very happy. Sony produces more items than just the PS3 so since it has a diversity of items it will remain in the lead." wrong, having a diversity of items does not have any relation to a company's market valuation. cash flow, net income, and growth are what drive a company's market cap, and sony, although it has been doing better, is still sluggish in terms of financial performance...read: sony's other divisions are still struggling, and its gaming division has not been doing as well as in past years (what with the PS3's price point and high production costs). as the article says, sony's share price has gained 72% in the past 2 years while nintendo's has gained 300% in the same period. thus, if the trend continues, which it looks like it will for the foreseeable future, nintendo will overtake sony in terms of market cap.

"pang0012 Nintendo is a tiny company compare to sony who does everything include consoles, games, consumer electronics, movies, musics, etc. Nintendo Wii only outsell PS3 for the time being but by the end of this year when 360 and PS3 have much better games come out than Wii everything will change. Wii only selling so well because it is cheap and appeal to a bunch of amateur gamers like kids and old folks. Wii games dont appeal to more serious gamers like teenage and adult except over at japan. At the end it is 360 and PS3 battle for 1st and 2nd place while Wii cries over its pitiful motion sensor strategy. Is is a good idea but sad that they not manage to fully utilize the idea but coming out with a bunch of childish games instead." Just a quick scan online, and I find at least 7 M rated Wii titles already available, and 5 for the PS3. Why do your posts read like broken records, retreading this idea that somehow as if by magic, the PS3 will suddenly do amazingly well at some point in the future? It's over, let it go. If you want to be a PS3 gamer, then go enjoy your PS3, but stop trying to rain on everybody else's parade with your wish that Nintendo will fail.

I own a 360, wii, and soon a ps3. I am a fan of all games, and have always been a Nintendo fan, but it seems everyone is counting sony out and stating Nintendo is the new big player. Yes the wii is selling amazingly well, but to state it is going to be the most successful console ever, and sony is going to lose out seems that is a little to early to tell. Nintendo will continue to control the handheld market, but if the wii continues to turn out ports with the new control, and doesn't get third party support, it will end up being a fad. Currently the most anticipated games are Nintendo in house games. Nintendo needs a big third party title on par with GTA, or FF. Third party games still dictate console sales in the long run, and hopefully Nintendo is working on attracting third party developers as much as Microsoft and Sony are. If they are then maybe Nintendo will once again rule all markets.

this news isn't surprising at all. nintendo's created systems that appeal to a broad audience and they have the most developed catalogue of first party games. it seems like every time news breaks of nintendo's success, fanboys of the more powerful consoles (especially the ps3) can't pass up the opportunity to diss nintendo's graphics, multimedia capability, and numerous other things. as they saying goes, cash talks and b.s. walks. there's no amount of arguing you can do to take away from the fact that nintendo's makin money off of their consoles while others are losing. keep in mind, sony fans, unless the article is leaving out specification of sony's game unit, nintendo nearing sony's value is sort of a big deal. nintendo only makes video games and consoles. sony has numerous ventures.

Tenjikuronin : No product nintendo makes will ever see the success of the PS1 or PS2 That's an awfully bold statement. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yeah, typical Sony arrogance...it's rubbed off on their fans for the last ten years which is why these numbers are so hard for them to swallow. They don't realize the PS3 is in a precarious situation. Most people who play Halo 2 online are doing so from the Xbox 1. If and when Sony drops the price, MS will follow suit. Since these devs are still trying to figure out the PS3 innards, the games look the same on both system. The Wii has already proven people don't care about specs but price. If the price drops now the only thing that will matter to them is that the xbox is a cheaper system and the games look the same. Which system do you think they will pick up? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edit- Sony had better be glad MS is not trying to sell the X360 at a $200 loss they way they are selling the PS3. It would have been curtains a long time ago. IMO Sony's not being fair to Panasonic(HDDVD). Look at the whole blockbuster deal.
