Nintendo named top publisher

Mario Factory unseats EA as Game Developer magazine's number one publisher.

by

Add another 100 coins to the Mario Factory's pocket. Game Developer magazine, published by Game Developer Conference organizers the CMP Game Group, has given Nintendo the highest honors in its annual Top 20 Publishers report. Nintendo's ranking marks the first time that the title for top publisher has changed hands in the five years that the magazine has been issuing its countdown. Previous top publisher Electronic Arts is now ranked second, followed by Activision, Ubisoft, and THQ.

In deciding its winners, Game Developer tabulates each publishers score "by considering number of releases by SKU, average review scores, and estimated publisher revenue from August 2006 to July 2007." The magazine also incorporated for the first time publishers' reputations by polling more than 300 individuals from within the industry.

"As we can see from the new rankings, the rise of casual gaming, coupled with these new reputational elements, has contributed markedly to ranking shifts," said Game Developer editorial director Simon Carless. "We're eager to see how these industry changes affect the report in subsequent years."

A complete listing of this year's Top 20 Publishers is available in the October 2007 edition of Game Developer.

EA is a good publisher ? News to me :o

That's a surprisingly good feat for a first party publisher, seeing how Nintendo would only publish on their systems.

Excellent work Nintendo! I only wish that anti-Nintendo fanboys would LEARN something from things like this: every new Mario or Zelda or Metroid game is NOT more of the same, but an extremely high quality game in itself, with a popular franchise as the base. Nintendo does produce quality, a lot more than many people think. But I highly doubt the Nintendo-hating fanboys will ever realize much... But again, great job Nintendo! They deserve it.

Not surprised at all. Wii is insanely popular.

People get over the whole mario factory thing... everybody knows that Mario is the msot well known character in gaming grandparents to parents know who he is and even his themesong he is powerful, he can sell thousands if not millions of counsles just for putting out a game with his face on it, and nintendo made him, the only franchise that even almost comes close to mario is donkeykong and sonic of which sonic is now not even famous anymore and donkeykong is nintendo owned. So props nintendo I am happy with you I am jsut crying right now because ssb is not out and your site is teasing the crap out of me :-(. I want my ssbeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

its funny how people are bashing nintendo for milking their franchises from 20 years ago. its impressive that the franchises have been able to last this long. i would like a new franchise, like pikmin or something completely new but if they keep up the good games, ill be satiated with other franchises on my 360

Eh, they'll always be the Mario Factory to me. Have no problem with it. As for best publisher...I mean, come on. They've got Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Smash Bros....and they ALL are coming out within the course of 12 months. They did exactly as they promised to us. Can't say I've seen Microsoft or Sony do the same as of yet. = D Good job, Mario Factory!

Mario Factory. Yeah, it is getting old. And everytime there is a quote from Reggie Fils-Aime, Gamespot uses the word "boasted" assuming arrogance. But they never ever use the word "boasted" with Phil Harrison....

With the Gamecube, they were most likely at the bottom.

They've also been seated as the cockiest company this year, taking Sony's spot from the last three. I guess being humble ain't Nintendo's thing...

That's a pretty impressive faet for Nintendo. However, I think it needs to work on the quality of it's titles if it hopes to maintain that lead.

brujagio Apparently whenever there's an article about Nintendo, the words, "Mario Factory," must show up or else it's not an official GameSpot news post. Far from professional if you ask me. Very nicely put. You have a point on that. Not that i have a problem with it but it's not really being professional.

I think the term mario factory suits them well. Until they release a new franchise that changes the face of nintendo and as long as they keep milking that that game and the other two that came out 20 years ago that's what they are going to be called. ------ I disagree, they have (like most publisher) their own license that they really milk. But they have tons of new game. Those that take advantage of the wii (Wii's sport? and all those sport based coming). Those that are suposedly for casual gaming? Were you raise the dog, the one that telles you your brain age. There are lot's and lot's of other franchise Nintendo has. It's just that because of Mario, wich is one of the most known game character, and wich is over used by Nintendo we just think of it as a "sequel-maker".

how can anybody say anything bad about capcom after they took a chance and failed financially on god hand, viewtiful joe and okami?

Think about this capcom released mega man back in the day, yet no one calls them "megaman factory"... because they've released a ton of cool games since then that have been very very different.

Nintendo really has done the ultimate comeback. Seriously guys - 4 years ago - even THREE years ago, even as soon as before the ds lite was announced --- Who would of thought Nintendo could beat both Microsoft and Sony?? I certainly thought that after seeing the DS (phat) vs the PSP - I thought Sony was the one going all-out and everyone would be loving Sony. I thought Microsoft would end up last place. But, Microsoft have put up more and more games and services. And adjusting their systems on the shelves to make things more attractive - It has just worked wonders (in most parts of the world anyways!). Nintendo are the real top trumps here though, most sales worldwide, and now winning awards like this... Nintendo is burning rubber, and Sony is eating their dust. For some reason, I find this both amazing and amuzing, because I used to be one of those which thought Nintendo had no gas left to win in the handheld market - and especially not the console market. How times have changed! But everyone must realise before fanboy bashing (although, stopping fanboys is impossible.. :() this, is that it is the gamers and consumers buying into Nintendo's new path and products. They aren't forcing it down our throats. I hope now that Nintendo continue to deliver the things that we want :)

My question is this: How the hell has EA been rank in the top 5, for that matter, the top 20 at all? I mean, I know I not the only one here who thinks EA has gone down the drain in terms of quailty (damn I miss NFL 2k).

Thats great for Nintendo, but please bring back the Seal of Quality to prevent the rest of that trash that gets published from landing on your consoles.

And I quote-"Mario Factory unseats EA as Game Developer magazine's number one publisher." To challenge, & unseat EA, that's pretty good.8)

You know, I'm not a big Nintendo fan anymore--not a Wii owner and don't plan on being one anytime soon--but even I'm getting a bit annoyed at GS's overuse of the term "Mario Factory". No offense, guys, but since when is the constant derogatory-sounding labeling of a company good journalism? All in good fun or not, it's too easily misconstrued, and it's definitely not cool. Especially in news posts.

I am extremely happy to see EA knocked off that pedistal their games are pathetic this year for the most part this year made me believe that they really don't care about their fans when they released titles like tiger woods 08 on x360 that barely works do to some devastating bugs and another crappy basketball game with no franchise mode and removing create a char on the wii games. its garbage i mean if they are going to strip down the depth of the games you would hope that they would play extremely well but this was by far their worst years in a long time as far as sports go...i feel their shooters are getting more and more disappointing every time also. But MOH heroes 2 looks promising

id dont just like one console i like them all they all offer different games, and most of these games a sequals to there franchises I.E halo 3, fifa08 maddan 08, mario galaxy, metriod all companys fall into this pattern, but as long as we still by them they will make them, if nobody bought the new fifa or pro evo, then they would have to really think about doing some major changes to the franchises same goes for all games. but well done nintendo for trying something completely different, and keeping your franchises fresh well sort off.

monco59 - If you want to look at a company that constantly creates clones of it's best selling games check out Capcom. You can barely go a week without hearing about a new Mega Man or Resident Evil game. Now don't get me wrong, I love Mega Man, but I would rather have less quantity and more quality, just like what Nintendo does.

Can Gamespot have an article about Nintendo that does not refer to them as the "Mario Factory"? Anyway, congrats to Nintendo. Of course I would give congrats to anyone that usurped EA.

Good for Nintendo however unlike most people I'm not going to take this as an oppurtunity to bash another company or console that many people here don't show signs of even playing... ...its just sad gamers make company rates more of a compatition than actually playing/competing in games themselves.

tastycasey27
tastycasey27

monco59 you really dont no wot your saying, ill agree nintendo do milk mario alot but thats not a bad thing as they all nearly end up great games, you forgot to remember that EA allways wins normally and lets think woth games they make, errrrr fifa 98,99,2000,01,02,03,04,05,06,07,08, madden 98,99,2000,01,02,03,04,05,06,07,08, i think just those 2 games make your point a load off bull, as like others have said on here all companys makes games and updates from there best franchises, its not nintendoes fault that they have so many.
