Nintendo exploring content partners for Wii U - Report

Game company said to enter distribution negotiations with Comcast, other cable providers, Web video producers.

Nintendo was late to the console-as-entertainment-hub game with its top-selling Wii, but a new report suggests nongaming content will have a higher priority with the Wii U. AdWeek reports Nintendo has entered negotiations with "major media companies" in an effort to possibly bring their content to the Wii U.

Who needs a picture-in-picture when you could have a picture-out-of-picture?

AdWeek's report did not indicate which media companies Nintendo is targeting for content distribution agreements. However, the news site's sources indicate that Nintendo is pursuing an online strategy similar to Microsoft's.

Thanks to its Xbox Live online platform, the Xbox 360 supports a variety of content from various media companies. These range from on-demand movie and television streaming services Hulu and Netflix to niche partners like Major League Baseball, HBO, and BBC. Microsoft has also signed deals with Comcast and Verizon to turn the Xbox 360 into a cable-box receiver.

AdWeek's report named only Comcast as a partner targeted by Nintendo, saying the company may be considering a deal similar to what the cable network has with Microsoft. Nintendo's outreach has reportedly extended to multiple cable networks, as well as online video producers.

Already, Nintendo has said that an online platform will be far more central to the Wii U than it was for the Wii. Also coming to the 3DS, the Nintendo Network will cover "competitions and communication among users, as well as the sales of digital content." The online platform will also allow for personalized online accounts and possibly the sale of full-game downloads.

Nintendo had not responded to a request for comment as of press time.

Nintendo good luck on trying to catch up on the multimedia functions. Sony and MS have a very long head start.

Ah yes. Build the Nintendo Network. I don't expect it just to take off. I assume it will take time to reach the level that Live has,but I'm glad they're going that direction. As to these possible partnerships, bring em on.Even if I don't care to have Hulu on my Wii U,someone else might, and that could mean a larger install base, which means more games for those of us who use it as a game machine primarily.

Don't know why people are being so negative about this. If the Microsoft did it just fine, then Nintendo can too. It's not like gaming on the Wii U will be destroyed... It just gives you more reason to buy one other than just gaming.

Good to know, though I still hope the focus is still more on games.

@thunderboltx7 there really aren't that many ads on the PS3 the only ads u may see are delegated to the whats new tab and u even have the option to turn that off now the Xbox 360 on the other hand does have alot of ads. it's ads on every page of it's dashboard u think with all the ad revenue M$ gets they wouldn't charge u for Xboxlive.

I really need this to be just another rumor in the rumor mill, I spent a whole class session defending nintendo And how they were the last actual gaming company, that's why we like them and that's wut we need them for...Netflix ok...Comcast? No thanks....stick to the roots Ninty and succeed like u always have...don't be controlled by the power of the dark side!

@pokemonblackftw I'm not sure if that's been confirmed, but I agree that it will be a negative for the new Wii. The current Wii suffers in that department (i've been using my Ps3 for movies) but it has never distracted me from my Wii experience. I wonder if nintendo will decide to include DVD capabilities, or support for certain video formats. I.e. plugging in a USB and playing videos/music.

@Keaze_ Remember Enron? (that's just a joke) I like the fact that Nintendo recognizes what is 'necessary' or standard to consumers, but it's been playing catch-up for a while now; many aspects of both gaming and multimedia experiences linked with Nintendo's consoles seem half-assed, but I do respect Nintendo's attention to remaining strictly gamer-oriented Evidence: turn on your Wii, what do you see? video game access Turn on the xbox 360 or Ps3? Ads, ads, distractions, buying other stuff, and a few places for gamer info. ^I understand that gaming has changed, but I would like to show respect for Nintendo's 1995 gaming orthodoxy compared to modern prescedent of electronic/online experiences. Not that Nintendo's 100% right or Microsoft/Sony are wrong, just acknowledgment.

I love nintendo they're great, but they really need to sit down and ask themselves once and for all: Ok, guys? What kind of company exactly do we want to be?

Didn't the claim over and over again how games were they're priority? But really, Comcast is evil. I guess Nintendo didn't get the memo.

I think it's cool and all, turning your console into a cable box also, but I prefer to game on my mine. I guess you could look at it this way. You turn off your gaming console to watch tv, now you won't have to do that, just switch to your video apps. Its the way each company is going. They're trying to be the most successful in terms of creating the ultimate entertainment machine for your living room.

All I can say is that I hope Nintendo does not try to put their hands in to many places at once with the WiiU and lose sight of bringing bigger 3rd Party developers to their system.

'' the news site's sources indicate that Nintendo is pursuing an online strategy similar to Microsoft's.'' Hopefully that doesn't mean a pay-to-play online that still forces advertisements upon you...

@beeftaco3232 I'm torn. My first inclination is to suspend you. But I won't, on the off-chance you're engaging in tone-deaf satire.

I wouldn't mind paying for extra content as long as their online is free... (ex. I refuse to pay for both xbox live AND hulu plus, although I want both...)

I really want their online to be like xbox live, only free. That would be incredible!

@beeftaco3232 Nice, an elitist little kid list. Are you in kindergarten or something or are you just very immature. Whats wrong with playing older games, if they are many good games that are over a year old/ Why do people have to buy new games all of the time? Why must people have to play what you tell them to? Why do people have to abide by your rules? Oh wait, because the world revolves around you. Your list of rules don't make any sense at all and seem like they were made by someone that is very young or has very serious maturity issues.

Nintendo, please keep on making video games the way you have always done. It was the only company so far that actually made consoles to be used for playing, and I can't be the only one that hopes it continue doing that. I want my console so I can play games and I don't want to use it to watch movies or do other things like that. And please, PLEASE don't make the Nintendo Network a paid service like the Xbox Live.

@beeftaco3232 wtf you going on about? a list? why would anyone want to be friends with a fake obnoxious person such as your self? obviously you do not have friends in real life and obviously you do not have many friends on PSN either due to the fact of you so badly touting for friends here... just go away and do something constructive with your life!

campbell153
campbell153

i hope the Wii U is not flooded with media apps like the 360 (i chose the 360 due to it being a media whore) it ruins the look of consoles and crams the HDD with downloads and updates that could be put to better use (with save game files and game downloads)... console gamers want this kept simple.. e.g press power, insert disc, play game... its a simple formula but one that has worked well in the past, consoles are not PC`s so lets keep it that way! :)

Interesting feature. But it better support the Virtual Console. Otherwise, retro gamers won't bother. And retro gamers were one of the Wii's biggest demographics.
