Nintendo buys Monolith Soft

Wii maker acquires majority interest in developer of Xenosaga, Baten Kaitos series from Namco Bandai Games.

by

Namco Bandai Games today announced on its Japanese Web site that it is selling its majority interest in developer Monolith Soft to Nintendo. According to the publisher, Nintendo has acquired 80 percent of the company's shares.

Namco Bandai is considering the sale as a way to strengthen its relationship with Nintendo and is not entirely ending its involvement with Monolith Soft. Namco Bandai will retain 16 percent of the developer's shares and will continue to count the studio among its partners. Best known as the developer behind Namco Bandai's Baten Kaitos and Xenosaga series of role-playing games, Monolith Soft is also currently at work on Nintendo's Disaster: Day of Crisis for the Wii.

Neither company's domestic representatives had returned GameSpot's request for comment as of press time.

they have to continue xenosaga and that is really all there is to it. For Nintendo's sake as a strong contributer to RPGs.

Ok great. At least this means they won't spend time making great RPG's for other consoles. Bring on the great RPG's for the DS and Wii please.

Interesting. May we now see more high-quality RPGs on Nintendo's consoles, please?

This is a genre where the Wii could dominate, but it definitely needs some help shoring up its RPG offerings.

Huh. I think this is good news. I for one really liked Baten Kaitos, and would love to see more nintendo RPGs, so for me this is a win win.

Nintendo should buy sega. That would be amazing imo - because Nintendo make pretty good games, and judging by Sonic on the ps3 and the 360 - you can see why I think that this is a good idea!! Plus, I would rather Sega make exclusive titles for Nintendo than any other console - I mean, they have had the most success with Nintendo, especially with Sonic - Secret rings kicks the 360 and ps3 sonic games' butt. And Sonic rush is really good too. Shadow the hedgehog? Sonic Rivals? I don't think Nintendo would let that happen if Sega was owned by them... Also, Nintendo could benefit from Sega's other forays. Namely PC games like Medieval II (etc) and its superb arcade games :D

Damn, If they continue Xenosaga on the Wii I'll have to shell out 300 bucks for one game...

I hope it is only the beginning of some kind of plan, that wants Ninty to buy more developers!

Sour grapes. If the game wasn't such a big deal, why did it go to part three? Hmmm.... I suspect another franchise cooking. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally it was planned for 6 parts, if you played the games you should realize that only 3 have a ending, the other 2 endings are simply "go play the next one". As pointed out they were not sellers, they are cult following.

What a lame company to buy, There games aer good but not nintendo amazing.

Main reason for the move was to strengthen ties between Namco and Nintendo-hence it will mean some collaboration in the future between the two publishers, the studio itself whilst not the greatest has some solid experience with GC hardware and can therefore produce games competitively for the Wii in a genre that is not YET well represented on the system. Its a solid good move imo. Apparently Disaster Day of Crisis is going to be one of the Wii's sleeper Hit's,at least that is what some of the Press would like people to beleive.

Hopefully, Nintendo don't buy Micro... Soft.

Almost sounds like a long overdue Apri's Fool joke... I suppose it means the definitive end of the Xenosaga series... I had already given up, but that makes it official then...

I hope nintendo continues/retakes the xenosaga series. In the beginning the developers had planned to make six after all.

A smarter move by Nintendo would be to purchase publishers, not independent development studios. Though they probably don't have the financial power of Sony or Microsoft which would explain them not doing so. Namco-Bandai is one of the bigger names in the videogame industry. To try and buy them outright would cost any company an arm and a leg. Monolith Soft is a mediocre development house. The Xeno franchise is known more for its cult following than its sales or quality of its titles. Which is, in fact, a good deal below that of Final Fantasy, Dragonquest, or The Elder Scrolls. Baten Kaitos is a franchise that has had even less success than the Xeno series. It's really known only to Nintendo fans and neither Microsoft or Sony would scramble over themselves to get their hands on the name. Not to mention that Namco still has some say as to what Monolith Soft does and depending on the contracts of Namco and Monolith, the Xeno series may be owned by Namco which would make it entirely up to them as to what happens with it. Not really big news. Tell us that Nintendo bought Square-Enix and then it'll be a big deal.

Nah, cross platform now only works between 360 and ps3, but the Wii needs it's own niche of developers, because their games wouldnt work/sel well on the other guys sytems, so exclusiveness for the Nintendo system will be common.

the Xenosaga series were good at best. i hope they are not planning to port all three to the wii. i don't see us playing them over again on a new console. i would play xenosaga 1 and 2 on the DS though. A remake of Xenogears would be a different story. That would definitely be a must buy and will definitely pull tons of RPGers to the Wii. More Baten Kaitos would also be good.

drakron XenoSaga was not a seller, also the main people behind it already left. I cannot speak for Baten Kaitos but it was a GameCube exclusive so I doubt it sold that well either. To Namco it means cutting fat, they had big expectations of Xenosaga that did not materialized as for Nintendo they might see a value in Baten Kaitos that explains this move. Monolith Soft is not Rare by a long shoot, honestly I have no idea why would Nintendo bother ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sour grapes. is nintendo going to use it's newfound wealth, to buy up developers, and "monopolize" game franchises, so that they're only on nintendo systems ???? I hope cross-platform is still the way of the future...

oh god Nintendo bought the company that essential destroyed what could've been a new Xeno franchise...oh well I hope Nintendo paid for a warranty because that product is defective and needs to be returned immediately.

A more correct statement would be that Sony's consoles are home to the most popular RPGs.

I'm not too sure. After renting these titles for 3 nights, i thought the games were average and not all that... but then being a FF guy that's probably no surprise. Still so long as it helps Nintendo.

Okay, Nintendo is starting to buy into more companies, now do what Microsoft and Sony do: buy all publishers so that no one else can have them and use them up.
