Ninja Gaiden III to be unmasked at E3

Tecmo Koei teases reveal of blood-spattered sequel at upcoming convention; game to ship sometime in 2012; first trailer inside.

Last year at the Tokyo Game Show, Tecmo Koei unveiled Ninja Gaiden III, the upcoming installment in the ultraviolent--and ultradifficult--action series. Little was revealed about the game, other than it would once again feature protagonist Ryu Hayabusa engaged in the bloody combat the franchise is known for.

Ryu Hayabusa gets bloody in Ninja Gaiden III.

Today, Tecmo Koei released the first teaser trailer for the game, which also teased the title's brutal nature. Running around 37 seconds, the clip shows Ryu Hayabusa repeatedly slashing and stabbing someone--from the victim's point of view. The clip then shows the titular ninja, covered in blood, leaning back to take off his famed mask--and then cuts to the Japanese character for the number three. The words "unmask" and "E3 2011" then appear before the trailer ends.

The accompanying press release--which never mentions Ninja Gaiden III by name--promises that the "new title" will see release sometime in 2012. Development is underway at Team Ninja under the leadership of the studio's leader, Yosuke Hayashi. Hayashi took over the shop after former head Tomonobu Itagaki left the company following Ninja Gaiden II's release in 2008.

"The game is set to introduce this franchise to a broader audience while at the same time retaining the legendary challenge that has drawn hardcore gamers to the series for years," Tecmo Koei said in a statement. The company promised that a playable demo of the game would be on hand for the press at E3.

Sounds good. See, Sega, there's money in reviving ninjas from the 1980s. Hey, don't you have a ninja character too?

@howie1926 Hahaha. Spot on. That's another game that I never really enjoyed. Admittedly between the two Ninja Gaiden I prefer, Devil May Cry has a huge following but then I suppose that's the folks that have followed the series from start to end. I tried to get on that band-wagon but never succeeded. I never thought I'd actually write negative comments about videogames.. I feel ashmed!

Was hoping to see some real info about it, Ninja Gaiden 2 was fun because of the action. I simply enjoyed killing enemies in that game. My only issue was the environments were boring. The difficulty was only annoying half of the time but became tolerable after awhile unless you chose the harder difficulties. Other than that, NG has potential of being addictive. I just the third one has better environments, improved design, and the gameplay remains the same with some new moves, new weapons, etc. The camera was the only issue that got in the way at times, so I don't think the actual gameplay needs to be tampered with.

@warhawk-geeby lol at least you did not flip out like half of the 5 yr olds on here and took it for what it was...a joke. But back to the topic at hand, I guess I can see your point. But let me ask you this, do you enjoy playing Devil May Cry? Or do you feel the same about this series as well? Because this would fit your definition of a hack n' slash trying to be more.

warhawk-geeby

@howie1926 Nice dig there :p No it's not a matter of it being 'too hard'. I just generally find the games a tad samey. They've always just felt a bit like 'what's the point' to me. It's a hack n slash game trying to be more than a hack n slash game. It just doesn't really work.

@Mattyrock I agree. Ninja Gaiden on the original xbox was a really amazing game, I played both NG2/NGS2 but I wasn't so satisfied like I was with the one on the xbox. I remember I played it many many times but NG2/NGS2 a couple of times I believe.

@Mattyrock Thing is, when the gameplay involves a lot of cutting people in half, there really should be a lot of blood. Having limbs flying off left and right and no blood just doesn't make sense. It seems like a massive contradiction to have insane amounts of violence accompanied by whimsical puffs of purple smoke. If they removed the blood, they should've removed the dismemberment, too I've never had an issue with the camera in any of the NG games. I didn't notice any difference between the camera in NG2 and NGS2.

@x-2tha-z Maybe so, but when I think of Ninja Gaiden, I think of the gameplay not the gore. Should it would have been good to have an option like that but I don't think it's a big deal that everyone should complain about. Wasn't the original games on the NES about gameplay and challenge? I thought the 360 version was horrible due to the crappy camera.

So I assume this game might show Hayabusa unmasked at some point then. I just hope the game would be as good as Ninja Gaiden Black though.

I've never enjoyed ninja gaiden,i dont even know why either. It could be down to the art style or even just the gameplay, but ill keep tabs on this one, maybe its a new take,i can always make space for a new game.

There is no doubt that the Ninja Gaiden series has been challenging and Gaiden III looks like it is no exception.

@warhawk-geeby How is it awful? The game is action packed and deep. With all of the different weapon variations and such. Maybe it's just too hard for you??

"The game is set to introduce this franchise to a broader audience while at the same time retaining the legendary challenge that has drawn hardcore gamers to the series for years," see that. to me every company is doing this for a little boost in sales. problem is they always put those 'wider audience' first. its backwards. try and make a great challenging game, with easy mode and other options instead.

x-2tha-z
x-2tha-z

@Mattyrock It didn't bother me but I think it would've been better if Team Ninja included an option in-game, to turn the blood on or off. That way, those who wanted it could have it, and those who don't..... I've also got the 360 version so I can play with full gore if I want.

Unmask, huh? Like we didn't see his face in the Dead or Alive series. XD

Unless I'm a complete idiot we already know what he looks like unmasked right? In the DOA games he has long hair etc....unless a fiend has infected him and altered his appearence or something.

I hope this could be as good as the first one which was a truly amazing game and it was really a great reason to get the original xbox. The 2nd wasn't very good, with or without blood.

Notice how real developers take there time with their development cycles for games? I'm sure this NG will be great like the last two, except those horrid Sigma editions, sheesh, those belong in a whole different category. Cant wait to see what this looks like this year!
