Ninja Gaiden III emerges

TGS 2010: Tecmo Koei uses Japanese trade show to unveil--but not detail--new installment in hyperviolent franchise, show art; Ni-Oh reannounced.

Ninja Gaiden II's release for the Xbox 360 in June 2008 was a traumatic one for Tecmo, as it saw celebrity designer Tomonobu Itagaki filing suit and departing the company while president Yoshimi Yasuda resigned amid the controversy. With Itagaki having formed Valhalla Game Studios and Tecmo merging with Dynasty Warriors creator Koei, the Ninja Gaiden franchise continues to march on.

Ryu Hayabusa returns.

Gamasutra reports today that Tecmo Koei has announced Ninja Gaiden III as part of its presence at the 2010 Tokyo Game Show. The game will be the first all-new installment in the franchise since Itagaki's departure, following on from Ninja Gaiden Sigma II's release for the PlayStation 3 in September 2009. A 3DS installment in the franchise is also in development.

Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi offered few specifics on what gamers can expect from Ninja Gaiden III as part of his presentation. However, Hayashi did unveil the first bit of art (pictured), saying that the game's direction could be "summed up in one image."

Said image is that of series protagonist Ryu Hayabusa, and judging from the blood smatterings on his fist and face, he has evidently just emerged from a battle. Hayabusa's hand seems to be lowering the shawl protecting his face, while his eyes appear to be reflecting flames.

Tecmo Koei did not provide a release window or platforms for Ninja Gaiden III.

Along with announcing Ninja Gaiden III, Hayashi reannounced Ni-Oh, which was first teased by Koei for the PlayStation 3 in 2005. Hayashi was equally tight-lipped about the title, saying only that it was being built in collaboration with Koei and that the focus of the action game would be on samurai. Development on the game is being overseen by Kou Shibusawa, a founder of Koei.

Hope the blood in the pic is a sign. I couldn't dig Sigma 2 after the gorey fun of NG2.

@Lords-Of-Shadow: Yeah, because an overabundance of red pixels makes the game better, right?

I'd rather have Dead or Alive 5 over Ninja Gaiden 3 considering Ninja Gaiden 2 was lack-luster compared to its predecessor. Ninja Gaiden required skill and fast reflexes. Ninja Gaiden 2 required patience, frustration, and well...luck. I'll pass unless the critics reviews change my mind...

Loved Ninja Gaiden since the early nes days then on xbox Ninja Gaiden Black on to Ninja Gaiden Sigma II. hopefully NGIII will be really violent even with Itagaki gone and it will be on the playstation 3 as an original title or sigma form. I loved ninja gaiden sigma II especially after never playing NGII for the 360 but I wish they would have left in the violence that they took out because the game would have been that much better then it was already with all the playable characters and extras and awesomeness!

Never played this. Looks like I can pick up NG2 for $15 on Amazon. I might do that, although I hear that some of these games are extremely hard or impossible to beat & I usually avoid games that are that tough since I want to be entertained by gaming not frustrated.

also before anyone bashes NG2 non sigma...without ninja gaiden 2, there would be no sigma... make sense doesnt it?

sigma 2 only did better cuz ppl liked teh bewbs. nuff said. I played both versions and all sigma was was just added multiplayer. which is NOT bad, but I LOVED the limb cutting and blood splattering and city scape. Its just my personal preference because Ive been playing NG since old school nintendo and ninja gaidens just not ninja gaiden without the robots, monsters and city+factory buildings. All sigma needed to make the game near perfect was keep the obliteration + blood splatters. just my opinion. Oh! and something lacking in the next gen ninja gaiden games is Ryu's gaddam theme music! i get tired hearing nothing but atmospheric background sounds.. I know theres old school fans out there who want this. I just feel like eversince DOA theyve had changed ninja gaiden too much these days

@shkar Ninja Gaiden Black 2? What the hell are talking about? Damn fanboy making up stuff in an attempt to trash the PS3 version which scored better than NG2. Almost forgot to include in my previous comment the annuisance of enemies spawning behind doorways in NG2, that certainly wasn't the case in the first NG games, so why did they result to such cheap difficulty tactics.

Hopefully it's more like Ninja Gaiden/Black/Sigma 1, because I personally did not like where Itagaki, yes that's ITAGAKI, was taking the series to. First of all, I hated the setting (city buildings) and it's vast open spaced environment; such a waste of space. I didn't like the focus on the obliteration technique at all. This mechanic changed the pacing of the game from "beating the crap out of all the enemies on the screen without discrimination" to "prioritising limbless enemies with this annoying camera work in mind". Also NG2 did not take advantage of Ryu's wallrun ability at all; they could have done alot with this mechanic. So disappointing. And who cares about Itagaki with this in mind, Sigma 2 scored better than NG2 and Itagaki wasn't even behind that game so Team Ninja aren't worse off without him.

@SpedKnight really? you thought Ninja Gaiden 1 was harder? I thought even in the highest dificulty was a walk in the park compared to NG2, Stupid enemy spamming with their explosive throwing stuff, and honestly, Ninjas are not supposed to use Rocket Launchers.....

Hyperviolent(only on 360)* I can't even believe they released Sigma without gore. Just bought 2 on ebay, sounds like the hardest game on 360.

Ninja Gaiden III. Hell yea! I hope they combine the viseral violence of part II with the adventure-style of the original XBOX game. Team Ninja can do without Itakagi, just look at the "Sigma 2" for the PS3. Besides the censored violence, that thing was jam packed with content.

Oh Ninja Gaiden 1... I guess we are both sorry for the terrible things we did to eachother. I just hope we can set aside our past differences...

Hopefully its released on the 360 and PS3 as the same time. Because that way everyone will get it at the same time and everyone will get the same content. Since Itagaki is gone, it could become a possibility.

love the ninja gaiden series, doubt i'm going to get this one because itagaki isn't there anymore, i have both systems bought NG2 for 360 then rented sigma 2 for my ps3 cause my friend wanted to play co-op but i couldn't stand playing a watered down version of the game less difficult, frame rate issues and not to mention a light show instead of actual blood splatter....ohhh was i pissed

I wonder if these kind of developers ever listen to their fans to make improvements/changes/etc.......case in point look at Capcom with the "new" DMC.....could they be any farther from their fans expectations?

Man, just hope the final boss is not so ridicously difficult as in NGII, how many transformations can a demon slayer really stand against??? Beating it is a pain in the a**

Will NG3 be the same without Tomonobu Itagaki? Both his previous NG games were just deliciously ferociously evil, and i hope that trend continues without him in NG3

Crystal-Flavor
Crystal-Flavor

I really hope they crank up the combat and not just violence. Some of the mechanics of the game feels really slow outdated and cheap and after playing Bayonetta I only come back to NG because of the violence. I mean I got PPs in IC bayo while dancing all over enemies while I got the MNs in PotMN using UT and XXY all the time.

Specter1075
Specter1075

I hope they return to a NGB formula where increased difficulty means tougher minions to fight rather than more of the regular-joe minions. Nothing in NG2 was more frustrating than dealing with the same guys over and over. Same with the bosses. Fighting each one at least twice, and in Genshin's case, four times, is a bit much and smacks of a lack of creativity.

Darth_DuMas
Darth_DuMas

As far as i'm concerned this is a flop until proved otherwise. The new Team Ninja have proved nothing to me yet when it comes to NG... except that they can port and add on content to an already complete NG game. At best right now i'm expecting nothing more then a carbon copy of the second NG game. Tecmo thinks they are so good without the last Team Ninja... prove it.

more weapons, more upgrades, more combos and more characters please!!!! kasumi was in the ending of NG2 so bring her along, and oh yeah i almost forgot more costumes. the downloadable content of sigma 2 was disappointing hope there is also more of this. Still need to play NG simga 2 on master ninja mode, stuck at chapter 5 annoying red and blue birds. Also mission mode not finished(master ninja&ultimate ninja) yet but there is still time :P
