Ninja Gaiden 3 boosts Tecmo Koei's fiscal year earnings

Latest entry in hardcore action game series sees nearly 11 percent increase in company earnings.

by

While Ninja Gaiden 3 wasn't critically received in the most positive light, it didn't stop Tecmo Koei from making decent profits from the game. According to the company's fiscal 2012 earnings report released recently (via Andriasang), Tecmo Koei's sales increased to 10.7 percent from the previous fiscal year to 35,525 million yen. The company's operating earnings rose to 56.1 percent to 7,472 million yen, while its net earnings increased by 69.3 percent to 4,640 million yen.

The reason for this increase was due to strong sales of Ninja Gaiden 3. The game shipped 630,000 units throughout the world. The company also got its revenue from repeated orders of backlog titles like Dynasty Gundam 3, as well as from royalties for games like One Piece: Kaizoku Musou and Pokemon Conquest. For more information on its earnings, check out the company's official statement here.

Ninja Gaiden 3 was released last March. The game was praised for its flashy swordplay but was panned for its shallow action. For more information, check out GameSpot's review of the game below.

They don't even deserve that money. I love Ninja Gaiden, I got NG, NG Black, NG Sigma, NG2, NG Sigma 2 and NG3 and I was horribly disappointed with the third. All they did was remove all the weapons, remove the golden scarabs, remove the time trial / 60 enemy fights and remove the shops / weapon upgrades and only added kunai climbing which was a little frustrating at times and the ninja sense thing that guides you to where your going which was heavily annoying.

It just told you where to go even in straight corridors, made the game feel horribly linear since any 2 second distraction to look at the scenery was met with this glaring and annoying text. It was a bad game sadly, good combat system as usual with an NG title but lack lustre compared to previous NG games in every form. Enemies weren't as varied, bosses were boring and less strategy reliant to beat, the level design was more linear, the QTE's didn't add much to the game etc. It was just a sad mess of a shorter game with most of the best features like multiple upgradeable weapons and scarabs to search for left out.

They bastardized Ninja Gaiden with this POS.

NG3 is by far the worst game in the series. I loved the first two games but I'd only give NG3 a 6.5. It's worth a try if you like the others but chances are you'll be disappointed.

i'm happy for team ninja.ninja gaiden got bad reviews but some times do those who review these games actually have a liking for them or is it biaseness!thus it's up to us the fans to prove such reviews wrong.it's one of my favorite adventure games on the ds and the level design and graphics was stunning.

I bet NG3 will win this year's award for "worse game everyone played".

I am glad I didn't waste my cash on this game.  A game that you can beat in less than 2 days, has terrible controls, lacks variety, and has far too many repetitive features (EX: Ryu weakened state and repetitive one liners) is not worth the effort in buying.  I would rather get the new DMC than NG3 since the gameplay looks new, but still has the style that the other games were known for.  This article makes me want to go buy NG Sigma 2.

"Hardcore" lawl. Ninja Gaiden 3 is about as simple as Venetian Blinds.

I loved NG1. It was challenging, it was fun, it was flashy, and you felt like a genuine badass when you killed enemies. It seems like the formula went downhill in NG2, not that it wasn't fun, and then completely tanked with this game. I haven't played the third, and I don't plan to. I am disappoint in the direction this series took

My copy is back at Gamestop, something I never do. Put the credit towards Max Payne 3.

I wonder how many of those sold copies are back at gamestop already though.

I was kinda interested in NG3 cause I enjoyed NG2, but as soon as I saw the first gameplay I lost interest and then when they announced mutiplayer that was the final nail in the coffin.

I've literally spent hundreds of hours on this franchise and I've loved every second of it, but Ninja Gaiden 3 was absolutely atrocious!Me and a friend of mine managed to force ourselves through the damn thing with heavy drinking and chanting "drink to forget!"

I was about to say "who the hell bought this game?" Then noticed it said shipped. I wander how many of that 630k shipped was actually bought by disappointed gamers.

I didn't purchase it, I had low expectations for it. As soon as I saw the E3 demo with quick time events I was like mehh..

@vengefulwilberg I would definitly recommend you to buy NGSigma 2 instead of NG3.Just about everything that was badly designed, ruined the pacing and so on in NG2 has been redesigned and fixed in NGSigma 2, the only downside is that they somehow managed to break the camera from NG2 which worked great IMO.

@muppen If you enjoyed NG2 I would suggest you skip NG3 completely, don't even buy a used copy of it! It's really really bad compared to the previous instalments in the franchise. As for the multiplayer it could have been amazing if done right actually, the components for a great ninja gaiden multiplayer experience have been there since the first game came out on the original xbox. Remember fighting the Ryu clone in NG/NGB/NGSigma? It has all of Ryu's moves and attacks and it still feels really balanced! Add some network code and replace the clone with another player and you have fully functional one-on-one multiplayer experience that still is in align with the ninja gaiden playstyle.

@TheDuskwalker However many were bought, it wasn't much of a profit. The game's MSRP was cut in half within a month at every store that wasn't struggling to make a buck.

@TheDuskwalker Yeah, I went to check on vgchartz(may not be accurrate but it's better than nothing), and it has sold around 200k on both consoles since March.

@guitarist1980 Actually them can be turned off, but still. The game doesn't meet the Ninja Gaiden standards. However the trials and online gameplay modes are both challenging and fun. Not worth 60 bucks, but they're still fun game modes.

@NettoSatio My impression from the demo was that the quicktime prompt is off, but you still have the delay that requires a button press while attacking.
