NHL 2K7 soundtrack goes indie

Sub Pop Records acts including Sleater-Kinney, Hot Hot Heat, Mudhoney provide music to hipcheck by.

With the NHL off-season already about half over, it's time for hockey fans to gear up for the preseason, and with it the annual releases of league-licensed games from 2K Sports and Electronic Arts. EA tipped its hand on the bands contributing to the NHL 07 soundtrack last month, and 2K Sports shot back today with its own list of big-name bands for NHL 2K7.

Rock is the order of the day for both games, but where EA showed punkish tendencies with its lineup, 2K Games has enlisted acts from the indie pioneers at Sub Pop Records to provide the tunes for NHL 2K7. The featured acts in 2K7 include the soon-to-be-defunct Sleater-Kinney, Band of Horses, Hot Hot Heat, Mudhoney, and The Postal Service. In total, Sub Pop artists will provide 12 of the soundtrack's 18 songs.

NHL 2K7 is set for a September release on the Xbox 360, Xbox, and PlayStation 2, with a PlayStation 3 release to follow before the end of the year. The game's full soundtrack is listed below.

The soundtrack on the game is crap, i put my own music on, pretty nasty stuff they got. The "Love As Daughter" song is awful!

usually 2K has some good songs (from unknown or not well known band) but with custom tracks who needs them

Ahem, guys, didn't you forget the purpose of custom soundtracks? Anyway, didn't thought Tim hates System of a Down.

how is soad a sell-out band? you do realize soad hates mtv? believe me, "indie" bands aren't very indie anymore. THEY'RE the ones who are selling out, not System of a Down. Mind you, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying any of THESE indie bands suck, I'm just saying that MOST of them do.

Wow too bad none of this music will be heard because this game will not be worth playing. Only bad band I see on there is Hot Hot Heat. What a terrible band.

Sub-Pop is not "pop crap" it's a Seattle indie label. System of a Down are a bunch of sell outs. Go play an EA game and watch some more MTV.

I know that it's "nifty" to include a band that actually has a NHL hockey player in it, but doesn't it matter that they are also one of the worst bands in the history of music? Seriously, Grinder sucks. So does Darren McCarty for introducing the world to the suckitude of Grinder.

In a strange, strange sort of way, this almost makes sense. Canada loves hockey. They also produce a disproportionate amount of really good indie/post-rock bands. Myself, I'm fairly distraught over Sleater-Kinney's breakup. Not distraught enough to buy an NHL game, though...

Props to a developer who puts a precedence in their sports games on putting good music in it rather than trying to make the most money from the major label's product.
