NHL 2K7 demo slapped on XBL

2K Sports' hockey sim now available on Xbox Live Marketplace; trial reportedly features one five-minute period, four teams.

The puck has officially dropped in the hockey wars. Yesterday, Electronic Arts released an Xbox 360 demo for NHL 07 that showed off the game's shoot-out mode, only hours before 2K Sports announced that its own hockey game, NHL 2K7, had gone gold.

Now, Xbox 360-owning goons in North America can also try out NHL 2K7 before the game is released next week. A demo for the game is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Those that want to take to 2K Sports' rink better make sure they have enough hard disk space--the file weighs a healthy 1.01GB.

Unlike the demo for NHL 07, the trial for NHL 2K7 gives gamers a chance to check out regular gameplay. The demo reportedly limits gamers to one five-minute period and four teams--the Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks, and Buffalo Sabres.

NHL 2K7 for the Xbox 360 and Xbox will be available early next week, and a PlayStation 2 edition is expected to hit shelves later this month. The current-gen versions will retail for $19.99 and the Xbox 360 version will sell for $59.99. For more information on the game, read GameSpot's previous coverage.

the demo sucks. the graphics are the same as last year, just a little better looking jerseys and the game is so easy. i scored 3 goals in a matter of a minute, that is just stupid. the 2k series once again fails to improve its game

I like the new game play of EA's demo better at the moment. I just want to know if that is the way it works in actual game play and not just shoot outs. The 2k version was almost a joke. I think the original xbox could have pulled those grahics off.

get EA and we will battle. better graphics, better control, better presentation. hands down, gloves off

The thing is thevarsmolta. For year after year EA has been changing its gameplay, that does not mean its better. It very well could be this year. As for the updated graphics being the only thing, your wrong. There's the rivalries in franchise mode. And if EA is doing anything like it has in the other years then it will be arcade hockey, not simulation. How can 2K change something if its already real? These are the questions you gotta ask yourself. Also are either game out yet? Until then just wait, try both. See which one most represents the actual gameplay of the sport called hockey, and which one is more like a complex version of pong. THEN make your decision. As of 2006, NHL 2006 was a more complex version of pong, while 2K6 actually resembled hockey. So i remain doubtfull that EA has actually brought anything NEW to the table besides right analog stick control which was already in NHL 2K a durr....

Why are all you guys focusing on the price of these games? Who cares? What matters is the fact that if you go with 2K Sports' game, you'll be playing the same game you played in 2006. Updated graphics...that's about it for this year. At least EA is changing HOW we play hockey... Read posts by people who have played the demos. They say 2K7 is the same as 2K6 (and 2K5 with the exception of that lame goalie cam)...same controls, everything...Now look at EA's NHL 07, new controls, AWESOME graphics...how is this even a contest? EA for the win.

2K games better offer up something really worthwhile for me to spend $60 for the 360 version. I'll rent it. If it's not up to snuff I'll stick with the current-gen version.

chibi-acer

$60 vs $20? Ouch! If the price was lower, I'd get 2K7 hands down. Now I'll have to compare the two.

2K sports lost my vote last year with their 360 version of NHL 2K6, and after playing the NHL 07 demo, with it's new controls which I absolutely love, I'm gonna be going with EA again this year. At least EA is changing the way we play the game. I love the fact that it's all analog, and a gamer's TRUE hockey sense can really shine. I can finally do everything I do on the ice in real life, it's great.

hmmm, decision decisions.... Do I pay 59.99 or 19.99? Either way I'm buying this game.

Current gen systems come in at one-third the cost of the next gen system? Looks like the XBOX and PS2 still have some life in them after all...

i was not planning on buying this game but if the demos any good i might get a version when it drops in price. loving all the demos on live recently. good way to test games without wasting money on rentals or magazines

The game hits gold and some idiot says hockey is going the way of the dodo. Gimme a break. Hockey is the best sport out there without a doubt. Only americans think that it isn't. Hockey is a way bigger sport worldwide than Baseball, Basketball and Football. It will never die. It takes twice as much skill and athleticism to play hockey as it does baseball. Not to mention Baseball is the only american sport that is actually from america. Basketball started in Canada, as well as "American Football" which was actually derived from Rugby, and was first in its "Football" form at McGill university in Montreal in the late 1800's.

The 2k7 game is freeking sick. ITs not ea gfx. But if you have a hd tv and ur playing 2k7. It look so much better to 2k6(on xb and 360 version). Again its not eas gfx. But i got to get both(ea acrade feel) (2k Sim). I just hope ea fixes its glitches. I dont wanna see skates going into the ice when i go on the replay :-/. O and dont compare 2k7 gfx to a psone game. Put it next to the xbox version of 2k6 and look at the difference.

atleast theres a reason why the next gen version costs more for '07. But after trying the 2k7 demo, i thought i was just playing 2k6. No big deal about this game. ea's puck physics and graphics are worth the extra money alone.

RazorRyu

The reason for the $20 price tag for 2K sports games was not because its a lower quality game. It was to try to steal some of EA's market share. They knew that the EA faithful were so brainwashed by EA that they would never switch over to 2K sports games if the product was sold at the same price. 2K games have always been better than EA's games, regardless of the price. If only there was next gen football from 2K........................

Ive played both of these demos, and it seems like some of the posters havent. Yea, EA's graphics are amazing... that shootout demo looks great. But if you really notice the animations dont seem right somehow, just watch some of the replays after you take a shot. Also, remember most people arent going to play a full game from those angles. I'd like to play some in game action before I decide on either... however, if the controls that you use in EA's shootout are how they are in the game... I think I'll go with 2k... graphics are one thing, but I'm a hockey guy, and I want gameplay over anything.

Whoever thinks that EA's game is better is really on crack, I just played both demos on my 62 inch HD, and 2k7 is SOOOOOOOOOOO much better. In every way possible.

interstate78

Ah and for the record, EA's current gen hockey game is ALSO 20$ this year.

interstate78
interstate78

Aaaaah, much much MUCH better than EA's demo. also a GREAT improvement over last year's graphics and guess what? it'll be 10$ cheaper ! just found that out today (at least in Canada: 54.95 for 2k7, 64.95 for 07) For all of you who actually believe that the in-game graphics of 07 will look like the shootout (which runs on the replay engine), just go in the video section of the game. The gameplay looks almost identical to the current-gen graphics. A far cry from 2k7 I tell you. And you guys must either be blind or be playing your 360 on some oldass TV from the 50s not to see the improvement in graphics and animation over current-gen. It's kinda weird that you hear people complain about the price for the hockey games but not about Madden, which was just as expensive for current gen and next-gen. Isn`t that hum, worse? oh and to think they release a coach game and a college game for 50$ each seperately makes you wonder where they stopped being sane. Cheapasses. git yourself a Gameboy Color if you can`t afford to buy games! They were 50$ 20 years ago! and you complain about a lil inflation? Pityful.

peeweeshift

stop arguing people. tony hawk used to cost cheap also on ps1 but the ps2 versions of the same game looked fairly the same but it was worth the extra cash. If you don't like the big price go buy some 6th gen version instead.

rgsniper1
rgsniper1

I don't understand you people that are saying at $60.00 the 360 version better be perfect to justify the price jump from the xbox version. Why not look at it realistically and compare it to NHL07 on the same console (which is also $60.00 right?) When 2k lowered there price to $20.00 it was widely accepted that they would eventually raise there price back up to their competitors level. I'd be counting it as a blessing that the current gen prices are still at $20.00 and haven't gone up to "normal" levels as well. Sometimes it sounds as if you people would rather have a weaker next gen game by EA than a better one by 2k if they are going to be sold at the same price. (i'm not saying which is actually better yet as I have no idea until I play them). Bottom line 2k doesn't put out crap sports games so get off there backs about being priced the same as everyone else. They don't owe you or I anything and simply had a good marketing plan to get people to try there games (ie.. $20.00 dollar hook), now they need to cash in on that marketing.

DeltaSpirit
DeltaSpirit

I still don't agree with the $60 price when the other versions are $20 bucks and when the biggest change i see is the skating, AI (the graphics are good but not great), 2K is usually is a people person, they sell their games at a good price and when NHL 07 is looking pretty good they need to step up their game (pun intended) next time.

are you people on crack? actually, don't answer that. The current-gen is only 20 bucks because game sales for current-gen are slipping and yes, there is more than meets the eye with 2K7 than NHL 07. Besides, this is hockey. The company knows it won't sell good because Hockey is falling the way of the Dodo. ITs sixty bucks for now so they can rack in some profit. Soon, it will drop and every one of you know it.

If your whole thing was to be the bargain sports game out, why is it 60 bucks IF it just has to be more than the current gens shouldnt it be cheaper by next gen standards this doesnt make ne sense guess ill be hitting up gamefly.

mebesquee

Why so much for the 360 version? 2k is always the bargain sports games but just because it is next gen it costs more? 20 bucks for the current gen should be maybe 35 or at most 40 for the next gen and that would seem reasonable. But there is no way I am spending 60 for it.

KoC_Master
KoC_Master

I wonder if the 'overall package' that 2k Sports offers for the 360 is worth 3 times the current-gen game they'll be releasing.. graphs don't look that much better, the gameplay ought to be almost flawless to justify such a price jump.

I just hope the current gen versions are more than a Maddenish roster update and nothing more. For only $20 I'm not holding my breath but I could be wrong.

Srsly. But I wish you could edit the various settings of gameplay. I'd like to know what the game will actually play like when I own it, not what it plays like for the little kids that like arcade hockey.
