2K Sports is resurrecting the NHL 2K series, not with a new game for consoles, but rather through a "premium" mobile game for iOS and Android.

The game, simply titled NHL 2K, will launch this fall for $8. It was co-developed by 2K's main sports studio Visual Concepts (NBA 2K series), alongside Chinese game developer Virtuous Games.

NHL 2K for mobile will include "enhanced graphics" and "compelling new features." Some of these include a My Career mode; a three-on-three mini game; and a turn-based multiplayer mode. The game is set to expand over time through roster updates, allowing players to add new talent to their teams in an overall race to win the Stanley Cup.

Below is a list of NHL 2K features, courtesy of 2K Sports.

  • Classic game modes, including NHL Winter Classic, Free Skate and Shootout.
  • New immersive My Career mode.
  • New three-on-three competitive Mini-Rink game.
  • New multiplayer options.
  • Live roster updates.
  • MFi Controller compatibility, NHL GameCenter LIVE connectivity, and iCloud support (for iOS only).

The NHL 2K series was for years released on consoles and PC alongside its main competitor, EA Sports NHL. However, 2K put the NHL 2K series on hiatus in 2011, with no new game release for any platform in 2012 or 2013.
