EA Sports has announced that NHL 2001 is now shipping to retail stores. The hockey game lets you play for or against 20 international teams and 30 NHL franchises, including the new Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild expansion teams. This year's version of the game features a noticeable graphical update, adding more detailed character models and environmental effects. However, the biggest addition to the game is the online matchmaking support offered through EA.com, which will rank players in their leagues based on their teams' performance.

NHL 2001 carries a suggested retail price of US$39.95. Check back for GameSpot's full review of the game tomorrow.
