NHL 15 announced for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4 -- Check out a teaser trailer

Next-gen versions include 12-player collision physics, rebuilt puck physics, authentic player likenesses, and new commentary through partnership with NBC Sports.

by

EA Sports today officially announced NHL 15, the latest entry in the critically acclaimed professional hockey simulator series. The game launches this fall for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. You can watch a teaser trailer above.

The Xbox One and PS4 versions of NHL 15 contain a number of features not found in their Xbox 360 and PS3 counterparts. First, the next-gen versions include real-world physics for all 12 skaters. Every player on the ice is governed by the physics at all times, EA says, noting that this is a first for any sports game ever.

NHL 15 for Xbox One and PS4 also boasts a "completely rebuilt" puck physics system that EA promises will bring a "more realistic" feel to every puck interaction. What's more, EA says every part of the ice--including the surface itself--is "live," which will lead to the kind of unpredictable puck spins, rolls, and bounces that you'd expect to see in a real NHL game.

EA also promises more authentic NHL player models for NHL 15 on Xbox One and PS4. Player models now have three unique layers--body, equipment, and jersey. Each layer interacts independently, which makes for even more realism, EA says. Player likenesses are also getting a boost from the power of the Xbox One and PS4.

"NHL 15 delivers groundbreaking player likeness, emotion, and animation," EA says. "From the strides a player takes to get up the ice to the emotion on their face after scoring a game winning goal, the players are as real as they've ever been."

EA has also overhauled the Skill Stick feature to give players even more control, and updated the arenas with a new level of detail "not possible on the previous generation." This includes over 9,000 individual crowd models and 4x the animation fidelity of the past generation.

Lastly, EA and NBC Sports have partnered up to bring new commentators to NHL 15 in the form of Mike 'Doc' Emrick and Eddie Olczyk. TSN analyst Ray Ferraro will add game insights from the ice level. All of this combines for a level of authenticity that EA says blurs the lines of the real world of sport broadcast and the game.

Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of NHL 15 are getting the new broadcast team, an updated collision physics system, an NHL 94 Anniversary mode, and a fantasy element in the form of Hockey Ultimate Team.

EA has also announced that fans will get to decide which NHL hockey star will be featured on the NHL 15 cover. Eight players have been chosen to compete for the cover, and you can visit NHL.com/CoverVote to make a decision. Voting ends June 1 and the winner will be announced during the 2014 NHL Awards on June 24. Choices include:

  • Erik Karlsson
  • Logan Couture
  • T.J. Oshie
  • P.K. Subban
  • Drew Doughty
  • Phil Kessel
  • Matt Duchene
  • Patrice Bergeron

New commentary? Thank God!!! And can we please have more than a half dozen real faces per team EA? Tired of seeing all these generic players who look NOTHING like their real-life counterparts on my team.

I don't get why FIFA comes out on pc and they don't release this on pc, I want to play this so bad but I only have pc and an x box 360 and there is no chance I'm playing this on 360, if they put it on 360 why the hell can they not put it on pc.

This should be on PC.

I'm not even into sports games but this is the kind of stuff I am wanting to see in next gen games.  Better physics, more systems and increased complexity in them.  I am disappointed by cross gen games so far, but then again I guess it's a lot easier to segment sports games.

FInally. This looks like the hockey game hardcore fans have been waiting for. Many of my wishlist items have now officially been checked off, so long Bill and Gary! Let's go Buffalo!!

Well Hughson and Simpson would've been my personal first choice, but Doc & Eddie is still a big improvement over Thorne and Clement. Not that they were bad, just stale and irrelevant now since the NHL hasn't been on ESPN for like 5 years.

If Rogers Arena is any indicator the arenas should FINALLY be 100% authentic. Can't wait to see the Saddledome! Go Flames Go!

Looks like they finally got the guardrails in the corners at MSG too on that closeup shot of the net from the side.

The ice looks more like actual ice than ever too. Love the cloth physics on the jerseys! And hopefully when they say "groundbreaking player likeness",that means having EVERY player's face actually in the game. No excuse why 6 or 8 yr vets like Curtis Glencross STILL didn't have their faces mapped in NHL '14...

Doc & Eddie. Well, hell, that might be reason enough right there!

I really wish they'd port the PS4 version to pc.

Another trailer with no game play.  Doc is cool but they need Pierre McGuire to do the on ice stuff in the game.

Wish EA wasn't lazy and made all their sports games on PC with "next-gen" features. I've bought every FIFA and I'm basically just paying for roster changes because EA is LAZYY

I buy this game every year and now the decision will be do I buy a next gen console or just stay with the 360 for another year

THANK GOD they got rid of Gary Thorne and that other idiot, god awful commentating for years. Pretty stoked on Ray Ferraro getting involved, best color guy in the whole league. Not much of a trailer but i've owned every single title since 1992, so you can bet i'll be scooping it up in the fall

Player models better look as good as Kevin Spacey does in the new COD trailer................. and how about they add the authentic coaches?  Or just stop showing that useless animation altogether.

Not a hockey fan and I believe the last hockey game I played was like '97.  Me and my cousin always played "most checks wins" instead of actually trying to score...

But I'm kind of tempted to buy this one.  CHECK CHECK CHECK

Physics mechanics are getting so detailed in some games, from having every body on the ice physics based for realistic reactions to force to things like Newtonian physics being used in space games games are taking advantage of the advanced physics techniques that have became so popular.

They make games look more realistic and save the developers time of having to do an animation for every possible outcome, and the last NHL was great with the physics based hits, although it lacked in other areas, this game online with as many players as possible just checking like crazy would be fun as hell.

Excited! Loved Gary and Bill, but I think it is finally time to let Doc take over for a while. I am really hoping for a solid game as opposed to NHL 14 which was just a huge money grab that actually took away from the previous game.

Sounds good but I'm wary.  Zero gameplay footage in the trailer, and I still remember the faceoffs being broken in the last NHL game I bought (I think it was '09).  No more of this break it so you can fix it next year crap, EA.

How can the candidates for the box cover include no one from the current defending champion Blackhawks?

Looks very kool indeed.... This makes me so depressed though because they dumped making the NHL series for PC and its the only platform I own heh... I used to spend every weekend playing NHL with my friend back in highschool all the time, we were both redwing fans back in the day and have to realize I'm english so we don't really get a lot of televised games its not hugely popular over in the UK, or it wasn't back in the day. It was always fun playing against the Avs and the Dallas Stars, were always such a bitch oponent having to play behind the net, first time snap shots and fights in the middle of a match... I miss it... its a real pitty EA don't make it for PC anymore because I won't spend 500$ or so for a new console just to play it... 360 and PS3 probably won't be worth playing this game on, the graphics and new EA engine will probably once again only appear on the new consoles coz of hardware limitations of the others.

Looks good though even though it was a CGI trailer...

@bizuit I don't understand why you wouldn't go next gen? What would your logic be to stick with last gen over next gen? I am curious!

snaketus

@bizuit  Ask yourself this question, do you want to play that same game 8th time a row. If no, then buy a new console.

zyxahn

@snaketus I was thinking why there was no NHL game too.  Madden wasn't all that great, NBA Live sucked big time.  NBA 2K14 awsome.  Not a huge soccer fan so obviously I never feel the need for an immediate soccer game on next-gen.  Now a hockey game on next-gen oh man this should be awsome.

@vackillers Yeh I'm a PC gamer who games a lot using a controller and I miss games like NHL and games like UFC and Skate would be great to get on PC but I'm not holding my breath, but as long as PC has so many other multiplatform games and the Oculus Rift and games coming out like Eve Valkyerie, Star Citizen, Assetto Corsa, Elite Dangerous, and many others I will be mainly gaming on PC, I might grab a PS4 for Christmas so I can play some exclusives but that will be it for my gaming needs.

@tom2750 @vackillerstheres a shit ton of games coming out only on PC too :D Star Citizen, World of Speed, etc etc. plus now with Steambox and the Occuls, the PC wont be doing too bad :) Its ok, he can stay with his PC unless he really wants to go for console exclusives

bizuit

That's why they didn't include any of the Blackhawks players

zrex2metagor
zrex2metagor

@vackillers @zrex2metagor@tom2750xD didnt mean it in a bad way, but yeah I get what ya mean, I hated it when they stopped Final Fantasy for the PC :/ :) but theres plenty of others and who knows, you might find a game similar to NHL if you look around, not saying you will, but you might :)

vackillers
vackillers

@zrex2metagor @tom2750@vackillersYeah eventually I will pick up a PS4 but by the time I have the spare funds, NHL 16 will most likely be out by then :D   Put a lot of money into a PC lately and yep, PS4 will have other games but for the games I play, PC is where most of the excellent gaming is at, They didn't stop FIFA for PC, or NBA, just find it strange they stopped NHL for PC which im sure sells a lot more on PC then NBA or MLB for that platform...

There was a comment that is now hidden but yes sorry about sharing my lifes NHL gaming in my first page... just got into it and couldn't stop lol....

zrex2metagor
zrex2metagor

@tom2750 @zrex2metagor@vackillersThats true, but I guess this is why people  will really have to start choosing between consoles and pc's. Both are getting exclusives now :) I do plan to pick up a ps4 at some point :) wanna enjoy best of both worlds
