NHL 13 beats franchise sales record

First-week worldwide sales up 9 percent year-over-year to about 491,000; 3.7 million online games played; Rangers, Flyers, Penguins most popular teams.

NHL 13 is off to the best start in the history of the franchise. Publisher Electronic Arts announced today that the game's first-week worldwide sales were up 9 percent over NHL 12's previous record-setting launch of 451,000 copies. This means NHL 13 sold about 491,590 copies during week one.

NHL shoots and scores.

EA also parsed user statistics for NHL 13, saying since launch, players have logged over 3.7 million online games, and scored just under 5 million goals. Additionally, the company said the most popular teams used across all game modes for NHL 13 in week one were the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Pittsburgh Penguins.

NHL 13 is performing better, on a year-over-year percent increase basis, than Madden NFL 13. EA announced earlier this month that Madden NFL 13 first-week sales rose 8 percent to 1.65 million, just below NHL 13's 9 percent increase.

GameSpot's review of NHL 13 found it to be generally great, with its realistic new physics system allowing for new levels of skating authenticity.

I keep waiting for a commercial for this game that is like "No hockey to watch? Get NHL 2013 to hold you over until the billionaires and millionaires can stop fighting over pennies."

Question: Is the Be a Pro mode the same recycled cutscenes and same limited off the ice options that have been in the past 4 games?

I loved the Be a Pro but they've done little to no improvements on it in several years. In MLB The Show, you could ask the coach for more play time and have rewards or consequences, you could ask for trades, lot of nice out of the game stuff. Does NHL 13 BAP have anything at all like that?

The player's association should just get together and run their own season in this game. Run a proper schedule and stream each match online. Turn ice hockey into an e-sport.

hockey fans need something to do they might not have any actual games to watch with the lockout.  they can find out how the season might had played out

Considering there is no real NHL hockey this year. Playing the videogame NHL 2013 is the only way to get your hockey fix this year. NHL is under lockout so the videogame version will have to do.

this is the only hockey people will be getting this season unfortunately

With the lockout I'm not surprised.  However, I've heard very positive feedback about the game through a bunch of my friends.  So it's not money wasted :)

With the lockout happening, this is probably all the hockey people will be getting this season.

NHL is a powerhouse brand, and these games are made well.

Of course it did! People need their hockey fix. The lockout actually helps this game lol.

Stupid lockout might make NHL 13 all the hockey i have this year. Great game, hoping NHL 14 adds more than just a couple gameplay features though.

I didnt buy last year and before that I didnt buy since 2005. I like the skating changes and the push towards a sim vs arcade. But dont confuse sales with happy players. Personally, HUT sucks and thats what I wanted to really play. Consumables last 1 game, so for example if you have 12 forwards, 6 def and 2 goalies - you literally have to go in and add your +skating, +defense, etc consumables EVERY SINGLE GAME. Holy micromanagement. I'd return the game if I could in its current state.

Probably has to do with the lockout

Another statistic; during those 3.7 million online games there were a total of 5 penalties called. Waiting for some kind of patch to fix that before I hit the ice again, but knowing this tiny development team, they'll either have it out months from now or not at all. Hopefully I'm wrong considering this is the only NHL action any of us will see this year. Perhaps their next NHL moment Live will consist of our Be a Pro players hopping a jet to europe or learning the Gary Bettman sidestep.

I guess alot of other people had the same craving for a hockey game that I did. I haven't bought an NHL game since NHL97. But I bought this game. It's really good, I just wish I could shoot with the buttons instead of the right stick.

Hopefully it doesn't become the best sport 'never' for this year

@SlipKnoT697 I agree man, but with it not even being confirmed that there will be a season this year it's kind of an insult to put this game out...

@cmacinnis  @SlipKnoT697 Not really because it will be the only way to get your hockey fix if you don't want to watch college hockey

Nah, all I mean is hockey fans aren't really SoL.

Lots of players in the EU leagues this year, plus AHL, OHL, QHL, etc, and actually playing hockey.

I'm still one of those hopefuls for a half season at the very least though.
