Summer is barely over, but Electronic Arts is already putting gamers on ice. After a slight deke late last month, the world's largest game publisher has released the first demo for its professional hockey sim, NHL 07, onto Xbox Live Marketplace.

The 541MB download gives gamers a taste of the game's shootout mode and a chance to test out the new skill stick controls, which incorporate the right analog stick for handling the puck. Players will be able to choose any skater from the teams involved in last year's Stanley Cup final, the Edmonton Oilers and Carolina Hurricanes.

NHL 07 ships to retailers on September 12 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Xbox, PC, and PlayStation Portable. The game is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older and will retail for $59.99 on the 360, $39.99 on the PSP, and $29.99 on the PS2, Xbox, and PC.
